Title: Improving SQ by stopping services
Post by: Eric on March 21, 2009, 09:28:57 am
Peter,
I would like to know which services are being stopped by XXHE 0.9x-5 because I used to stop services (like Spooler, WinDefend, TabletInputService,..... etc.) manually before I start playing XXHE.
Can I now skip doing that with 0.9x-5, or does it still make sense to continue stopping services manually ?

Gr, Eric.

Hi Eric,

It didn't take long for a question like this popped up. :)

First of all, but this is not 100% waterproof, is that I detect whether the Services I shut down are running or not. If not, I don't restart them. So, you shouldn't be bothered by that. But as said, this is not waterproof, and this emerges at the moment you need the "Service" button to restore all, which indeed does "all" because *when* you need that button, XX lost track of things.

I am not sure at this moment how to make it all fool proof and convenient at the same time. For example, the services you mention as an example, aren't running here either. But, they never do. So, I most certainly not want them to get active only because I need that Services button for other reasons (read : for other Services).

What would be in my mind is a button per Service, as may be there a checkbox per Service to shut down. However, right now this is not needed. Why ?

Right now the only Services I shut down are those from the graphical user interface (that would be Themes and UxSms). Thus, it is my guess that everybody wants them running, as soon as you are doing something with the screen. And this happens so at the moment.

In a later version I will shut down everything which can be shut down, and then the above will apply.
It will just be an entension of what is there now, and what is there now was just needed for the Running Time. But since the principle is in, the others are a piece of cake, at the moment I know which.

I hope this is a satisfying answer ...
Peter

slightly OT but slightly On topic I can happily report dramatic improvement in SQ by stopping services (or those that remain after after the cmd line escapades) and controlling via hot keys.
Don't know why - it shouldn't be that dramatic but it is - a much "darker" background and lowered noise floor.
Playing:Jacques.Loussier.Trio - Bach Goldberg Variations (2000) and all instruments are very sharp, localised and have high res. Excellent.
Cheers
