Title: Fuse
Post by: arvind on February 21, 2013, 10:46:00 am
Hi Guys,

Wanted to share my experience with high quality fuse as compared to std fuse.

A few days back I replaced the fuse in the NOS 1, preamp & amps with HIFI Tuning Supreme Fuse. The results are outstanding. The harshness in the mids & highs is significantly lower...the sound tends to get more musical & has a lovely softness to it. Separation within different instruments is greater. Overall clarity is audibly improved without getting clinical.

At $ 60/80 a piece, its steeply priced, but in my opinion a tweak well worth it.

Best regards,

Arvind

Hey Arvind,

Funny. I think it really is the only part of the NOS1 I did not pay attention to. Possibly because I don't believe much in these kind of "tweaks". But I sure believe *you*.

Do you have a link to that product ? I now like to try it myself. Others might too (note that two of those fuses are needed !).

Thank you Arvind.
Peter

Hi Peter,

I bought these off their stockist in US, The Cable Company, link http://www.thecableco.com/Product/Supreme-Small--20mm--75--Fast-Blow--F--Type

Being a German manufacturer, HIFI Tuning should have stockists all over Europe.

Best regards,

Arvind

I would certainly be willing to get 2 of them also... I sure hope that someday, someone will come up with an explanation about the improvment felt with these devices ?

Alain :)

Hi Alain,

I gave a feedback to Ken Stevens of CAT for his preamp & amps. His reply was very interesting. He found the same improvement when he bypassed the fuse. Of course it can't be done at production level. He too believes that this could be the near best solution to the fuse problem.

Best regards,

Arvind

Hi Arvind,

Thanks for the note :) I will look into it.

Like someone uses to say: "Everything matters" :)

Alain

Hey guys what's the proper fuse value for the NOS1? I'm traveling so I can't "pop the lid" and look at the fuse. Thanks.

Brian, 1000mA for your 115V.
500mA for 230V.

5x20mm.
"Half slow" type.

Hi Peter,

HiFi tuning, like most other fuse manufacturers don't make half slow blow type. It's either fast or slow blow. I have installed the slow blow type as recommend by HiFi tuning.

Best regards,

Arvind

I am using these fuses since many years.
From my experience I can confirm that the type/quality of fuse makes a significant difference. It makes sense, because all power needs to pass through that thin, small wire. The biggest difference was in my phono preamp, but also the NOS1 DAC delivers a sound that is more solid ("grounded") and has a bit more microscopic detail. For example see http://www.kempelektroniks.com.
By the way, my NOS1 DAC is powered through a Power Station that delivers Regenerated, Balance power (same website).

Cheers,
Eric

Interesting a small length of silver wire impregnated with 1% gold. Does that make a difference? It would not surprise me if it did. do the makers / suppliers understand why it makes a difference? - I doubt it.

So I reckon it could make a difference in your systems but I have a hunch it would not make much (if any) difference in my system.

So Peter if you do buy 2 fuses and they do make a difference in your system maybe afterwards ship em over to me and I will try them in my system.  I bet you a(nother) bottle of whisky they would not have much (if any) noticeable difference in my system (maybe Nick could lend his "honest ears" for a second opinion)

If my hunch is right I will explain what I think they do (but not how they achieve it).

Ha ha

I had HIFI Tuning fuses in my PS Audio Perfectwave DAC when I owned it, and it made a significant improvement in the sound. There are a ton of posts on PS Audio Community forum singing the praises of the HIFI Tuning fuse. I also have a pair of their fuses in my PS Audio P5 Power Plant power regenerator. Just so you know, these talk on the PS Audio forum of the orientation of the fuse when placed in the DAC making a difference. This may be all subjective experience and a bunch of smoke and mirrors but I figure I'd just throw that out there for people who like endless tweaking.

So Peter are you going to take me up with this bet? My system is different in one important respect.

Of course I could be wrong! (it would not be the first time)

Cheers

No way.
:grazy:

We would be betting on the same horse anyway ...

I've had one of these in the DAC in my main rig (not presently using XXHE - but now that Peter's mentioning laptops, that may change) for quite a while, and have been very pleased with what I thought I heard.  (Changing the fuse in my DAC means carefully removing about a dozen small screws, so it takes long enough that an immediate A/B sort of comparison is impossible.)  The manufacturer of the DAC uses either 1000 or 500mA  for this fuse, but at the time I didn't know that, so I ordered one value, read another user saying it should be a different value, and ordered the other.

So the upshot is I have a spare.  Don't remember at the moment which it is, but I can look when I'm back home this evening.  If anyone would like my spare that was used for perhaps a couple of days, PM me.

T500mA (500mA slow-blow for 250V) Supreme (a/k/a "Black")

T500mA (500mA slow-blow for 250V) Supreme (a/k/a "Black")

This is the correct fuse for NOS 1 (230v), however the NOS 1 requires 2 numbers.

Hi, Arvind.  2 numbers, meaning 2 per NOS1, a different one depending on which country/voltage, or...?

In any case, for anyone who can use it and would like to try it, I do have one of these fuses spare (as noted, the 500mA slow-blow, so would be for 230/250V).

Hi Jud,

The NOS 1 requires 2 numbers fuse in them. Specs of the fuse depends on the country voltage.

Arvind
