Use REGEDIT to change;
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile there is a key “SystemResponsiveness” set this to “0”.
Don’t worry this value defaults to give all Low priority processes 10% of CPU time.

Here is a bit more information on what is going off. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms684247.aspx

Again I hope this works well on other peoples systems, I am dreading Peter saying that they have nothing to do with how XX works, if so it’s quite a placebo  !

Need to do more listening, but this tweak is no placebo, immediatly even more refined than what Ramdisk alone brings. Thanks Nick!

Hi Marcin, from the quote below, how does one add the new DWORD, IRQ8PRIOITY? Not sure what you mean by this. I've also attached a screenshot of the Priority Control you point to in REGEDIT. Maybe a screenshot back showing what you mean might be helpful.

Thanks!

In Regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl, add a new DWORD, "IRQ8Priority" , and set the value to 1.
In that same key, look for "Win32PrioritySeparation" dword and set the value to 28 (hex). Restart a PC.

Wasn't me that talked about shutting off services; recently its mostly been Marcin, Nick, Roy and other knowledgeable folk. Most of those recent descriptions can be found in this thread and in the "We all Fell in the W7 Pitfall" thread.

Hi Praphan, here's a step by step for RAMdisck:

The best way the apply RAMDisk:

First set the partition-size and fat32, then do nothing, reboot (or maybe 2 times)

Then you have image space (extra hdd) on your RAM, then copy the complete xx folder to that location.
next, setup xx with all settings that are needed, including your key.

Then go to the second tab in RAMDisk, Load and Save, and press "Save Disk Image Now" and select checkbox "Load Disk Image at Startup"
Reboot

Then finally select checkbox "Save Disk Image on Shutdown"
Reboot

Its about all those reboots that are needed, but when up and running it will work nice.

Roy

PS: correct me if i'am wrong, I will adjust it.

This seems superfuous, but is not; It will avoid copying the XX stuff to the RAMDisk again (maybe two times); no big deal, but setting those settings each time is not a nice thing.
Moral : first wait until the RAMDisk shows up automatically after a reboot (thus, maybe two), and when that works, copy in the XX data, set the settings, and finally check that box "Save Image on shutdown" and also save the Image at that point. This latter again is "necessary" because each change (like from the mentioned checkbox) is only dealt with *after* the reboot. So, just one step too late in fact.

Like Roy said : when it works, it keeps on working. Really a nice tool IMO.

Peter

What kind of problems have you encountered trying to install XX on your Vista partition? Just wondering cause I'm planning the same with my desktop.
906  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ with XX on RAMdisk on: October 10, 2010, 06:58:32 pm
If XX/Ramdisk sounds too laid back, you might want to lower your SFS by about a third. SFS changes are much more subtle, or they have less effect in Ramdisk, but, to my ears, its not (yet?) completely irrelevant. Overall, on my system, Ramdisk is as significant an improvement as the switch from wasapi to kernel streaming.

Finally got home and listened to xx/vista/RAMdisk. Wow, so much more refined, less harsh. SFS's significantly  reduced. Gotta thank Peter's SSD for frying and sending him back to Vista and Marcin, damn, wonderful collaboration. Am trying to take Roy's advice and go slow, but Nick's tweaks sure look interesting too. All in all its a little dizzying in "here" at the moment. Unbelievably cool.... Cool

So, in the Ramdisk Configuratio utility, what disk size should be selected; I have 4 gigs of ram on the computer? Also, should one select Fat 16 or 32? n the "Load and Save" tab, which checkboxes should be checked, I presume one would want disc image saved but.....Lastly, do I reinstall xx directly on the Ramdisc drive? Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks guys, I'll sit back and let this unfold for a while before I purchase Vista. Seems Roy's cooking something up that's going to be worth checking out.

Btw2, I sure won't rip out the new means of "SFS" for 0.9z-3. But I hope it's not needed anymore to mangle it. Also it might be good to know that in my opinion the SFS "tweaks" were not there to improve sound, but instead it could deteriorate. To my findings, the lower the worse (never mind you could receive more detail from the lower settings).

Thanks for keeping those "options" in Z3. For me, the best sound has generally been from increasing the SFS above 70. (90-115) With older, what seem to me to be cr*ppy, recordings, lowering the SFS and bringing forward the details helps those recordings, but they are the exception, not the rule.

Geeze, you guys are stressing me out! Think of me as "Joe the Plumber" or whatever term you use in your various languages to describe your basic guy whose not too well versed in electronics/computers (but who loves listening to music!). Really, I just want to come home from work,   smoke a good one, hit the play button on XX and enjoy! Having just "upgraded" from a laptop with vista 32 bit to a box store desktop with Windows 7, (WITH WARRANTEE!) you are now saying that I need to go back to Vista!!!!!!! heat  WTF ! Okay, with that said, phew, let me tell ya what my ears say:

Fucking Vista sounds better than Windows 7......I think Peter described the sound of Vista as delicate. Here I would describe it as that also, but because of the wonderful separation between the instruments. Windows 7 sounds congested compared to Vista, though the base, as Marcin says, does seem to have more punch or heft to it in Windows 7. I am embarrassed though cause I ignored my initial impressions (we won't go into that) and thought Windows 7 was such an improvement...... I think that the operation of XX generally on the desktop, NOT ONE "ENGINE 3 HAS STOPPED WORKING" error,  is what got me......

So, I'm going to amazon to order Vista, any suggestions on what version? Home premium is what I would be inclined to buy so I could wipe my OS hard drive, (WITH WARRANTEE) and install Vista....  wacko I sure hope that XX operates as well as it does now.

One last thing, I first noticed the differences regarding SFS using my laptop/Vista, so it doesn't seem likely to me that that discussion is over. Just sayin'!

912  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Split file size and volume on: September 29, 2010, 07:01:19 pm
I haven't noticed a specific connection between music file size and the appropriate SFS setting. Here things like powerful female vocalists and violins totally benefit from a higher SFS, whereas classical guitar and piano, generally,  sound much better, richer overtones and tighter treble, with a lower SFS.

At this moment I have no clue as to what can be happening that this influences so much, but regarding the character of it (frequencies come forward which shouldn't) I can even imagine it can me measured.

It's the "coming forward" of those frequencies and, conversely, their slow "disappearance" (and emergence of others....) when increasing the SFS, that has sorta obsessed me lately. So far, it seems there are no hard and fast rules for it, only generalizations. Most 16/44 material sounds pretty good (settings as signature below) between 70-100; however, SOME material, Oscar Peterson's "Night Train", 24/96 HD Traks version, sounds better with a setting around 20, while Karen Carpenter, 16/44 home rip (WMP unfortunately, would rerip it but can't find the disk!), becomes silk at 120.

Its because I find myself frequently fiddling with this setting that I ask for the convenience of a button on the face of the GUI. If you guys can make XX automatically adjust to the optimal setting per trak, that would be great too, though I think you'd need to employ magic, or maybe just adjust a cpu power setting or two.....to get that happening.  Happy

914  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Wrong order in Playlist Area ? on: September 25, 2010, 02:20:18 pm
Sometimes things just have to percolate for a while Happy. One thing though, I usually load album tracks by double clicking the folder in the library screen, which is like clicking the load button. I just tried dragging the folder from the library to the playlist area and got the same out of order result.

Hey, I also noticed in your screen shots a certain "0.9z-2b-07". Can I have one too?!
915  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Wrong order in Playlist Area ? on: September 24, 2010, 06:15:38 pm
Peter, below are three photos showing the same problem with a 24/96 I downloaded from HD Traks. The first shows the tracks in the library window, the second shows the out of order traks in the playlist window after loading them, and the third shows the tracks as they appear in explorer. I did nothing to edit the track names when I downloaded them from HD Traks.
