121  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SFS = 4 on: December 10, 2013, 12:21:59 am
(also this is the first positive i hear about win 8.  )

Sorry.  I meant as an OS in general.  In general, consumers of PC's don't like Win8.  Win8 is not a "where do you want to go today" OS,  it is a "where Microsoft wants you to go" OS.

My comment was not directed at an OS for music playback.  I tried putting it in parenthesis, but I really should have not made the comment.   However, my mistake provides an important point, namely your comment that no one who has tried it has turned back.   That's valuable info.
122  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: "HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in library on: December 10, 2013, 12:08:44 am
I'd guess the problem is not with the search.  The problem appears to be that the albums are not listed in the center pane to begin with.  If albums are visible in the center pane, they also show up on search.  Opposite appears also to be true:  If albums are NOT visible in the center pane, they also DON'T show up on search.

- HDTracks may have something to do with it somehow.
- 44.1 never seems to have the problem.
- I've seen the problem once with a 48/24.

xxHE correctly ignores DSF.  Many DSF files are stored there in my file system and they correctly don't show up in the center pane.  Could it have something to do with this "ignoring" function?   Perhaps the ignoring is too aggressive?

This is on a stock xxhe PC.

Today I have new data.

I went to play some HD classical and I went looking through the list of icons.  I could not find Exotic Dances, Minnesota orchestra.  It's there.  I know it's there, but i could not find it.  So i went looking on the left pane's file browser.  From there i found, selected and played it.  (that Minnesota Orchestra album had been in my collection for more than one year.)

After selecting and playing from the left pane, that album now shows up in searches and in the list of albums in the center.

That should be a strong hint for you.

At this point Casandra Wilson was still not showing up as before... so I looked her up on the left pane.  There I noticed that I had selected the last track to be in my Nice folder.  So that was not enough to recognize the album.  From this point I don't think I fully loaded her album from there.  I think I kept looking for other HD tracks that might not show up.

Next, what happened?  Now Cassandra Wilson's latest album shows up in searches and on the icon list of albums in the center pane.  I think I only clicked on the folder for the album on the left pane and the folder opened up.   That's all.

This should be a stronger hint.

No it can't be udf.  These are hdd's and i used win 7 defaults when i formatted them.
125  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SFS = 4 on: December 08, 2013, 08:02:39 pm
Wow! That much better?
This is hard to believe but i believe you.

I just upgraded to win 7...  But will of course this will be my next move.

My bass is already great, so this makes me really wonder how it can be with win 8.  (also this is the first positive i hear about win 8.  )

You're right, q5 did almost nothing on win 7.

Thanks

I'm sure I've added at least one album since i first added Cassandra.  So i don't think that's it.

So maybe it is a matter of adding an extra Casandra Wilson album?

No, actually that can't be because I've not added any more Chicago albums since X.  ..and now X shows up.

???
127  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: "HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in library on: December 08, 2013, 05:02:48 am
Nope, copying a folder.jpg into the Cassandra Wilson folder did not make it visible.   So that hypothesis is incorrect.
128  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: "HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in library on: December 07, 2013, 08:49:43 pm
New clues, new information about this problem.

Firstly,  I now believe (almost know for sure) that this problem has nothing to do with FLAC in the folder name.  How do I know?

Well, I never did change the folder "HD Music\Chicago\X".  I left it as X.   So what?  Well, now it shows up!!!
Next, I downloaded a new title with folder name "D:\Music\HD Music\Cassandra Wilson\New Moon Daughter" and I have the same problem.  That being, it shows up if I use a date search using [D], but does not show up if I do a text search if I type in Cassandra or Wilson.   Other Cassandra Wilson albums show up, but not the new one.    ????
WTF !

But what do these two have in common?   Both were downloaded from HDTracks.com.   And recently from HDTRacks, downloads have no folder.jpg.  Instead they use embedded images.

But xxHE does not see the embedded images.  So I manually put folder.jpg there months after I first reported problems with "HD Music\Chicago\X".    So this could be why it now shows up,  because I manually created a folder.jpg.

And I still have no folder.jpg for Cassandra's latest album purchase, and as I said it doesn't show up.
So, if I create a folder.jpg and suddenly it shows up,  then the lack of a folder.jpg file may prove to be the problem after all.  Though the above may prove to be enough to convince.
129  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SFS = 4 on: December 07, 2013, 08:31:17 pm
I don't see the controversy or newness with SFS=4, Q1=1, Q1x=1.  When the craze was SFS=2, I remember that some tried 4 and higher up to about 12 because these higher numbers gave smoother sound.  Q1=1 was also common in those days and Q1x did not exist.

I used SFS=4 for a long time.

If this helps, when I first assembled my xxHighEnd PC, I started with SFS=120.  But I was forced out of 120 for some reason that I can't remember right now but I then settled with SFS=4.  Mind you, this was with a Wyred 4 Sound DAC2, for which I had a bufferSize of 2048.  SFS=4 worked well with the default DAC2 settings.   Eventually I migrated to SFS=6.  6 was better in every way.
Then I changed the DAC2 settings to open it, softening the brick wall filter by setting it to "PCM Rolloff = Slow."  This allows the DAC2 to product square waves with little if any ringing.   With the DAC2 open like this, my SFS is now 60.  [editorial:  1) my signature stats needs to be updated at the time of this writing. 2) All of this is Win7.]

But back to SFS=4, I ran SFS=4 for a long time and never noticed any change in the bass.  Same for SFS=6.  My speakers are dead flat down to 40 Hz, and -6db at 20.

Hi Peter

Yes,  I distinctly remember one.  It's an Adele album in 48KHz and 24 bits.

The entire path name is now working correctly as:
D:\Music\HD Music\HD Backup Music\Adele\Live At The Royal Albert Hall 24bit 48Khz

From this path, I had removed the word FLAC in all caps and bare with no parenthesis around it nor brackets.  I only don't remember where it was;  probably it was on the very end.
131  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: "HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in library on: October 14, 2013, 12:57:01 am
All of this reminds me of another one that you've seen, or that I think you've seen.   When a directory includes the word "flac" in the string, the album shows up in the library, yes,  but the files do NOT load into the playlist.    I've seen this twice with the version in my sig (at the time of this writing it's the current version).
132  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: "HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in library on: October 13, 2013, 03:52:13 pm
Exactly         (...try it on your end)

Especially when you consider that I have, for example, the Mercury Living Presence Box set which I stored in a tree like this (and in the following example, just searching for MLP2 finds all):
HD Music\MLP2\CD01\{Artist}\{Album}
HD Music\MLP2\CD02\{Artist}\{Album}
HD Music\MLP2\CD03\{Artist}\{Album}
...
etc.

This means that searching will find any string in the directory tree should come up with results for all.

So searching for "Chicago" should find:
"HD Music\Chicago\{anything}"   where in this case {anything}=X.
133  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / "HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in library on: October 13, 2013, 04:50:04 am
Hi Peter

"HD Music\Chicago\X" does not show up in the library.

The band is Chicago.  The Album name is X.

However, if I do a date search with D, it shows up.

It also shows up on the left pane if I navigate to the folder.

And in the same directory tree, the following albums do show up:
"HD Music\Chicago\Chicago II"
"HD Music\Chicago\Chicago V"

This is odd when you think of it because just typing in Chicago should show all.

And just typing in X still does not show it.

Makes we wonder how many other albums I have and can't see.

Any ideas?HD Music\Chicago\X
134  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Alt-c is not working correctly on: July 29, 2013, 05:32:37 am
I just thought of something.  The extra files might exist because I never deleted the index files in the real music drive.  Remnants of 6 and 14 were on the music drive from previous xxHE errors of the type I'm reporting in this thread.

Thinking that I had made for a clean start, I only deleted the corresponding folder under the Nice Stuff directory (gallery).  Well, I guess that is not really a clean start if the remnants remain in the music drive.

[BTW, I don't like that xxHE actually writes to the music drive.  Makes me nervous (writing carries risk).  I say, read my data but leave it alone!  My vote would be to do galleries entirely by only reading from the music drive.]
135  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Alt-c is not working correctly on: July 29, 2013, 01:59:30 am
Not urgent, but might as well point this out...

I've been noticing that my alt-c choices have not been there when I later went back to play them.  So today I several times tried alt-c in both attended and unattended and it does not work properly.

Here's what I did in one such incident.  Here, I selected tracks using ctrl-c, but that problem also shows up if I don't use ctrl-c.

  • Double clicked on a hires album and xx loaded 14 tracks.
  • Selected track 4 and 13 using ctrl-c.
  • Clicked play in attended mode.
  • While track 4 was playing I clicked on alt-c.  All looks like it's working because xxHE displayed the usual popup.
  • After the popup went away, I waited 10 seconds or so more of track 4.
  • Then I hit Next.  At which point, track13 started to play.
  • While track 13 was playing I clicked on alt-c.  All looks like it's working because xxHE displayed the usual popup.

The result was:
  • No mta for track 4
  • mta files for track 13, this one is the only correct one
  • mta files for track 14, which I did not select or play
  • I never selected nor played track 6 but GLxx files exist for track 6 (and No mta for track 6)

Don't loose too much sleep.   Wink   Although seriously, I do like the alt-c function and wish it worked.
