Title: Most peculiar : loop from "wrong" rips ?
Post by: PeterSt on October 26, 2010, 09:16:21 pm
I just want to share this :

Disclaimer (but as important) it could be the 0.9z-3 production version ... (so you could all suffer from this) ...

I am currently ripping 4 CDs on another PC in the network, while the resulting files are (directly) stored on one of the disks of the audio PC. This is the PC I -as currently- use for playing music, just from those just ripped CDs (being one CD behind so to speak). But :

What I really never saw before is that at playback certain tracks are "in a loop" during playback. This is not related to the on-going ripping, but to the rips just being wrong (without notice of EAC which I always use). Yes, I use Real Time for the playback thread ...

What happens when you are "freshly" looking at this all, is that music suddenly stops. Huh ? now what ?? So, ctrl-alt-del to bring up TaskManager does nothing. Alt-x, nothing. Everything else, nothing. But - I think as a response to the ctrl-alt-del - a black screen occurs a few minuts later, and again 1 minute later or so a message telling that it is impossible to log in due to security reasons or something.
Reboot ... the same thing.

Bringing up TaskManager in *advance* and playing Attendedly shows 100%  CPU useage in the playback thread, and it can easily be stopped now by just clicking Stop in XX. Or kill XXEngine3.exe for that matter. Without TaskManager being there in the first place and playing Unattendedly (after Alt-P) I couldn't find another way out except for a hard reboot.

In the far end it comes down to rips being destroyed because of playing (at real time ?) during ripping and the file (index whatever) pointing to itself (for next blocks to read ?). Remember, the ripping taking place at another PC, the result going to one of the audio PC's disks.

If it's not this (actually illegally) way of ripping during playback, more people should run into this ...

A rerip without playing at the same time solves the problem ...

... but it still is a real problem, and I still say it can happen to anyone. Here's the first case of it : W7 freezing after hit Play (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1438.0).

Now, when you don't receive sound (can happen at the start of a random track, and it will be 100% repeatable), check TaskManager and look for one core to be at 100% with XXEngine3.exe as the cause. Kill it, and don't play that track for now.

This will be solved for 0.9z-3a.
