Title: Playback of some tracks not starting
Post by: Arjan on January 16, 2013, 12:34:46 am
Hi,
Maybe my issue is the low level netbook I am using but this is my issue.
I do not use any upsampling in xxhighend, just native redbook cd resolutions.
Some tracks will not play when I use a playback drive. I tested it with different types of drives. With or without PA and different SFS (although my ranges are limited) First I thought it is a poblem with only the longer tracks (>15min) but even that is not the case. For some cd the playback will always stop at a specific track or sometimes skip the track. So as far as I see it, it depends on the track. But what is the issue? Without a playback drive there is no problem. When there is an issue my NAD m51 dac shows the source as 96k, which it is not the case. The only thing I did not test is to rip the cd again.
kind regards

Hi there Arjan,

Simple answer (and it ain't gonna be more difficult) : the disk subsystem in there is too slow. As a whole I mean. Look at the disk light and you will see it constant-on, most probably already before playback starts. The latter happens because it is still catching up with a previous task and its main task to complete will be writing (to disk).
Or boot it and watch the disk light behavior. Should be off within a second or two with Minimized OS, but you probably can wait for 10 minutes if not forever.

Btw, all tells me you play in Attended Mode. With Unattended it will keep on playing.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Thank you for the answer. Yes, this might be the issue. But why always the same tracks, which for as far as I know not really are different from other tracks. If the system is on the edge I would think that the issues should be more random.
I think I always run unattended, because I need ALT-X to open XXHE again. It is not a big issue for me, but I read some other threads which for me seems to address similar issues. But you are right, the system is slow, needs around 30 sec to 1 min to start a cd playing.

Arjan,

If this happens with Unattended, then it should be about your Playback Drive being extra slow. What do you use for it ?

That you see it happening with the same tracks can be fairly normal, or at least with the same sequence of tracks it can be. For example, if that is a disk which spins down, it may do so because of a longer time no access needed, which logically will be the case with longer tracks. Also, the spinup time may not bee the fastest, and then all together we run out of the allowed time to load a next track (which allowed time is 14 seconds).
So, when I would be looking at your situation I most probably will be able to explain it easily, but from the distance this is hard to judge. But obviously it is better to not allow for the whole situation in the first place (have it all "on par"). Besides that, you will gain in SQ vastly, but that is another matter. Or ?  :) :)

Regards,
Peter

PS: You can try to increase idle time before spin down of the disks (Power Management) and see if that helps.

Hi Peter,
Thanks again for your time.
I have tried different types of playback drives, they react all similar. With 32 Gb USB key, 160 Gb external spining harddrive and also a 2 Gb microSD card there was no difference.
But maybe they are all reacting slow because of the Netbook? Btw. between the tracks (when everything is fine) there is never a waiting period, just gapless playback.

Hi Peter,
I forgot to tell, but as far as I can remember this situation started with version 8. Before I never run into this. But the SQ is so much better, I will not swich back to 75.

Hey Arjan,

Which is true, the quote above, your first post in this topic, neither or perhaps both ?

IOW, now I am confused. Notice that so far I responded to your first post (obviously). I am not so sure these responses will apply to above quote ...
