Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Phase Alignment The Best Thing

Yesterday I went on trying different settings with PA, but no magic happened.
I checked out the dc on the input, since no dc passess to the output with a cap and transformer in the signal path and found "only 34mV. This hardly shifts the operating point of the input tubes and should not make a big difference, but inserting a blocking cap before the input made all the difference!
PA works now and with the - setting the magic of the music reappears. Highly reccommended indeed!

Thanks,
I should have looked closer!
Maybe the combination of the higher Q1 and PA makes sense. I lowered the lot to add a little zest to the sound, which workes quite well wo PA on my set. Along with the exceptional clarity that PA brings, the sound suffers from a 'thinning' and dynamics feel unnatural no matter what I tried (yet).

Hi Peter, PS:
Personally I'd never look for KVM solutions. It can only bring more noise. So, convenient maybe, but no chance for LESS noise ever.
Like the KVM cable is acting as antenna? Or interference from video to mouse/keyboard? I would say it is at least a passive solution (used as extention cable without switch) compared to any usb device and has therefore inherently less structured noise. Well, anyway I'd rather use the tablet as a controller ditching the monitor in favour of bt. Time will tell. Oh, If anyone still thinks of the KVM solution, don't forget to order the male to female adapters alongside! (like female in, female out) Regards, Coen

- I already have a long-enough DVI cable and will just need to buy a couple of PS/2 extenders (I hope they exist!). Meanwhile, it's a quick dash down into the basement whenever I need to access XX. Mani, Look for "KVM" (Keyboard, Video Mouse) cable. These are ubiquits since they are used for selecting between servers in a datacentre. Some even have USB (i.e. for connecting a usb drive with a new version of XX). regards, Coen

Hi Joachim,
Z7 is indeed very different from previous releases. I am exploring all new optimal settings for my setup. I think is is still too early to draw conclusions at comparisons. Still, a lot of experimenting with xx volume settings, attennuators and preamps has been done before, browse the nos1 threads to your advantage!

PA = Power Amplifier or Phase Alignment?
VC = Volume Control...
When you are going to reconnect your NOS1 keep the following in mind:
A little time ago there was a thread about attennuation on xx and NOS1 sound quality. It was advised NOT to play XX full scale (0dB attennuation). I once had a poweramp with very little gain attatched to my NOS1 and a can confirm that the NOS1 sounds a lot better with 6dB of attennuation.

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Straight contiguous not working

Hi,
This is probably the result of a too large video buffer. Set your screen in the most simple mode you can still stand looking at (lower resolution 1024x.., 32 bit colours). You may even have to look into the bios if you can lower the videobuffer settings (if the cpu has an integrated graphics capability).
Furthermore you need to start XX and press play asap after booting.
I played with a sfs of 140 'straight contiguous' on a Atom d525 with 4G of memory.

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0.9z-7 - Minimize Button stays blue

Since the topic of this thread has vanished a little in all the effort explaining what a wallpaper is and where to look for a red border (for the uncolourblind under us), I would like to bring it up again. I most likely have an activated 0709 version, (with red border on the wallpaper coverart) and am quite shure I am in minimised mode (ie crossed loudspeaker icon after the reboot from full OS) but the minOS button is still blue. Not only that, I cannot change its colour with a right mouseclick like in previous versions. Consequently, it won't let me go back into full os . Is this intentional or addressed in another version? Btw I still have XXHE occasionally stop after 30 minutes or so. regards, Coen

At the end, what I wanted is to know more about the differences in SQ between the internal SATA III vs. external USB 3.0 used for music storage. Any comment from the ones with some experience about it is welcome.
I only have experience with my music disk on XXHE v9-06c and this didn't turn out for the better. What I took for extra space and detail was actually accompanied by a mean harsh glare. I blamed it on the casing's switching PSU, but a linear (lab) supply brought no improvement. Aspects that may matter: no hub was in place, I bought a quite generic not-too-expensive-on-stock ICIDU 12V 3,5" casing and had to use the packaged USB3 cable. I connected it on the remaining USB3 port of my PCI-e card (mobo USB3 is off). I don't know how this works out for v9-07 and when used in Peter's abovementioned fashion. I am not risking 1,8Gig of music . regards, Coen

The USB3 disc I use for my normal audio PC is a. connected through a powered USB3 hub; b. the disc (enclosure) itself is powered as well (if that still matters at all).
I'm pretty sure this setup is a good thing for SQ.
So the hub is also part of the setup. If I read it well both the enclosure and hub have their own supplies (not via an usb3 port). Those are probably switching supplies. Soon I will have the means to check Nicks tweak #3 (seperate liear power for the sata devices). I wondered about Juans difference is the sound of rips to os disc of to a separate music disc. This is really odd, bits should remain bits wherever they are stored. Do they have the same hash (md5)? If so then it must be either due to differences in connection (sata ports, cables, powersupply cables), disc (production tolerances, country of manufacture) or formatting/filing (sector size, disc type). Can we rule any of these out? Regards, Coen Regards, Coen
