121  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: RAM-OS First Impressions on: January 26, 2016, 10:33:49 am
Hi Peter

I was talking to Mani yesterday before he got his RAM-OS working and I was extoling the virtues of the sound quality. I am glad to see that Mani gets the same result I do.

It gets better though every time I listen. Each time I hear something new it takes time to appreciate really how good this is. And I was saying to Mani it is clear just how much effort you have put in to build the RAM-OS system.

As both Mani and I were saying yesterday we really do appreciate the effort you put in Peter.

Oh yes and put me on the list for a kiss and a hug (ha ha) but I think I have said that before when I first got the NOS1.

I listened to much music yesterday mostly chamber music and the sound really has detached from the speakers. Small groups of players are actually sitting in my conservatory behind the speakers.

Cheers and Huge Gratitude

Its OK there is no problem after all it appears that I was not waiting long enough for the XX GUI to come up. It seems that it works OK but it just takes longer than I was used to.

Cheers

Arjan, try this :

Start in Unattended. All cosy ?
Now bring up XXHighEnd and only that. So let music continue ...

This is the way I listen -  i.e. once in Unattended press Alt X to bring the XX interface up. However there is a problem that I have not had before (I use 586 in RAM but same problem in 586 BASE unsurprisingly).  So after pressing Alt X nothing happens I always have to press it again to get the interface up - then I get error message about two versions running. I cannot get the interface to come up first time.

A minor problem but I have not encountered it before the RAM-OS system.

124  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Which will be the OS to boot, after playing from RAM ? on: January 22, 2016, 10:40:45 am
Hi Peter - a question and apologies if this is off topic but if the XXHE PC is powered down whilst an OS is loaded in RAM what will happen on restart assuming the RAM-OS disc is installed. Will it just load the previously loaded OS back into RAM or will an OS have to be selected from a BIOS screen?

Boot into TRIAL (ehm, no Internet or/and Updates Off).

Rename the file (the proper one) to a for you recognizable name. MyW10-10586-Upd or so.
Now copy from the " - Copy" version back to the original name (thus register that original name first).
Remember, do *not* rename the " - Copy" to the original name (you would loose the backup).

Done  and all is fine

Cheers

Peter  - it was 586 BASE should I replace it with the copy 586 I await your guidance. By the way 586 seems to be running OK it certainly sounds good when loaded into RAM even though it "suffered" an update.

127  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / RAM-OS First Impressions on: January 21, 2016, 10:20:25 pm
Oh yes this sounds good - very very good, actually superb. Could this be the end game? I have said that before and been wrong so I will not say that this time but I would feel justified in saying it.

Most noticeable at first listening is just how much bad recordings are improved. Bad recordings with electronic "haze" suddenly sound very decent. Dance tracks sound clear with real human voices rather than electronic voices. A whole layer of hash removed. Hash that was not obviously there before.

And I have not mentioned the bass yet. I think I said in a post some time ago when I replaced the mobo master clock with a dexa that there was more bass. I was wrong then because I hear exactly the same improvement again. With the RAM OS it is more that bass is clearer and better delineated. That can lead to the wrong impression that there is more bass - there isn't it is just better bass.

I have recordings where the bass can be felt almost rather than obviously heard as I have said before very like the incredibly low rumbling of a passing lorry. That is even clearer now.

It would be interesting to go back now and put the cruddy old cheapo mobo master clock back in to see what happens. That is not going to happen as it is too much work but my gut feeling is that it is still important. The really interesting thing is that the changes the RAM-OS makes to the SQ are very similar to the changes the dexa made except that the RAM-OS is probably more profound.

Anyway that is all academic it seems that whatever music I put on whether the best jazz or classical or just cr*p dance music I just want to sit and listen to it. That is a GOOD thing.

Very pleased it is that I am.

Mani - you gotta get your visit here organised !!!!

Cheers

Paul

Just to note that automatic updates was set to ON by default with my RAM-OS disc and before I could get into my router to disable internet access on my XX PC it updated the base disc. I assumed the router would prevent access to the internet with the new RAM disc because the MAC address had not changed (can't see that a new disc changes the MAC address) but I was wrong. Probably the PC name changing caused the problem.

I'm still on W8 with SFS at 4.00.  I have tried lowering it, and can reliably play with it lower, BUT I have not liked the sound.

It is some while since I have been on W8 and IIRC I had SFS at around 4 then. However now on W10 I am at SFS 0.12. Previously on W10 I could not get SFS below around 2 without the sound developing a hard edge. However, I installed IMDISK (RAMDISK) and ran XX in RAM. That made a difference in that I could run at significantly lower SFS without the sound getting edgy. I have not attempted to go lower as it sounds fine now. Also with RAM OS coming soon I am not inclined to fiddle with settings.

The person starting that discussion about the SSD losing its data when not under power must have some special senses.

Nah just something I read somewhere sometime seems it is not that that is causing the problem anyway.

Better for this to happen now rather than after shipping - I am in no hurry.

Yesterday I fitted a new pro Intona and sat down for some critical listening. I have to say I was a tad disappointed. Yes there was a difference but not of the OH WOW kind it was subtle worth having yes but not earth shattering.

Today I went up to see Mani and was surprised to hear just how much difference the Intona made in his system. More than mine for sure. That was until I got home a couple of hours ago.

What a difference a day makes. So tonight I am listening to some tracks I was listening to last night and the difference with Intona in and out of circuit is much bigger. It has to be burn in. Or did I have cotton wool in my ears?

But the comparison is not a fair one and the difference should be even bigger when I get my second Clarixa. That's because the impedance matching is ruined with Intona in circuit because of the long el cheapo usb cable from the PC to the Intona. Of course with the Intona out of circuit the Clarixa from PC to NOS1a provides good impedance matching.

Wow very surpised it is that I am.

I am listening to LCD Soundsystem just now and it is with big smile on my mush.

Cheers

Surely you are allowed to say that I am crazy for liking any Rammstein ...................

No one is crazy that likes Rammstein!!!!!

and then there is Tool and maybe Melvins and then Clutch (but that is lighter).

IMHO of course

About two weeks ago I tested with an SSD

Hi Peter - SSD sounds great but is there a potential problem?   I understand that SSD has a limited time of about 2-3 months if it is not powered before it starts to lose bits. I would think that once installed many of us will leave our PC's on with the OS in RAM and the SSD sitting on a shelf.

Hi Peter - it is exactly the same for me and has been since I had to set the date back so that 10074 could continue to be used.
