31  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: New system : Distortion only - Any experiences anyone ? on: October 10, 2010, 04:50:09 pm
Hi all - Can I ask for some help in here ? Happy

I mentioned it in between the lines elsewhere, but my new system turned out to be a fiasco;

Motherboard : Asus P7P55D-E Evo (s1156 socket)
Processor : Intel Core i7-870, 2.93GHz.
All SATA drives configured as IDE (no AHCI).
OS on a OCZ Vertex-2 90GB.

This small set brings nothing but distortion. The best what may happen is that I have4-5 minutes of normal sound (which still sounds wrong to me), and then slowly the distortion starts. It's small ticks in the beginning, but it is a matter of waiting until completely no music is audible anymore.
Whatever Q settings do not matter a thing, as does the sound engine;
The strange thing is : this happens the same with KS Adaptive mode which checks the buffers, and no error comes from that. So, somewhere deep down things seem to get out of sync, while the OS doesn't know about it (buffer checking).
Oh, Split File Size influences largely, but never brings a solution.

Disk light flickers each 1 second, and as far as I can see it doesn't come from some OS settings. Notice that the exact same OS (disk) put in my old system, doesn't exhibit this, nor is there distortion.
W7 or Vista no difference (clean installs). With and without Tweaked to Dead.

I am not going to ask you what this can be, nor am I able to try suggestions (the PC is out of order now, and all is in the old system again), BUT, someone may have experienced the exact same. Also, I recall a post/topic somewhere told about a similar thing, but don't know where to look for or how to find it.

So, the most characteristic is the vinyl-like ticks it starts with, which grow more and more and more, eventually ending up in distortion only.
Once the distortion is there, it is clearly noticeable that e.g. a moving graph from TaskManager incurs for the distortion (gggk gggk gggk).

I tried and switched etc. all I could think of, but it all doesn't matter a single bit. The only thing I did not try (I didn't see how to do it) is changing the FSB/Clock ratio which is set to 22, and which seems high to me (more normal would be 9 ? -> I just don't know).

It feels like PCI bus related.

If anyone even had the slightest problem which looks like this, please let me now !
Thanks for your possible help !
Peter

PS: Actually for me it is a bummer only, and not much of a problem; I will trade the lot for something completely different, and 99% sure the problem will have gone. The importance is though, it may happen to you the same. So I rather "know" what causes this, and how to solve it.

Hi Peter,

While playing a file and after shutting off DCPLAT I experienced a very fuzzy distorted sound! Could not cure the pain by restarting XXHE.
After rebooting my system, problem was gone. Maybe you were checking latency  with the same program?
Maybe it helps...

32  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: ION 330 HT as base for XXHighEnd? on: May 19, 2010, 11:56:53 am
Hi Ivo,

I've worked with both 240 and 330 Atom. No big problems untill AP was introduced! AP 2 worked reasonably well, 4times will not work without little tics and stutterings. This with dead tweaked w7 and Vista.
Changed to a core 2 duo, 3.2, and everything runs smooth and fast with minimal tweaking.
Also look a bit in the future. You can be shure Peter will think of more SQ-improving tricks which will be a bigger burden for your PC!
You can count on that.
So go at least for something like C2D or better! Not just dual core but Core2Duo. The 65 watt-ones.
Succes in choosing!

33  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: PCI soundcards on: April 07, 2010, 01:42:25 pm
Hi All!

I know some of you out there have Audiotrak HD2 or Asus essence st in their system.
I mentioned in an other thread some problems I have using those cards.
Working with analog out, is reasonable satisfying. Playing a litlle with different opamps etc. However when trying to feed some extern DAC through SPDIF-out of the cards, the following problems occur both with engine 3 and 4 on W7/64bits:

A.P. Quad gives no sound, though the pointer moves. So NO playback sound! Double is fine.
The Essence ST gives ticks every now and then. Not through the analog rca-outputs.

Maybe one of you deals with the same problems?
Please let me know

34  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: not getting further with double or quad on: April 05, 2010, 10:40:14 pm
Hi Peter,

Work with two PCI-cards on W7 64bits.

1:Asus Xonar Essence st
2:Audiotrak HD2

Both cards work fine via analog out and Arc Prediction double and quad in apdative or any other mode.
When feeding an outboard dac using dig. out (SPDIF) of both cards, just double works, NOT SO QUAD! No sound with quad, but pointer moves.
On the Asus card I do have incidental clicks in the playback (at digital througput SPDIF). Maybe this because of not beeing able to do 88.2 and 176.4 and samples up in a wrong way? Can choose 96/192 and anti image, but like to stay in arc pred. though.
Do you maybe know a reason or have a solution?
Next to these remarks am very happy with the sound, as ever.
 Happy Ed

There is also : Audiotrak HD2 with 2xLT1364 ans 1x LT1361

Hi Johan,

I have worked for about a year with this fine card. On Vista. With the early Beta driver .978.
But after switching to W7 64bits ult. and the latest HD2driver 1.08 the fun is over. After the first restart I get beautiful BSOD's. Problem is only gone after un-installing of the driver and installing my second card, Asus Essence ST, with its drivers and I am back in business.
But NO Quad Arc Prediction, just two times works(with ticks)! Using SPDIF out. This is because of the restriction of the missing sample freq. as 88.2 and  176.4.on the Asus card.
When using the built-in dac of the card with the anal. outs I can do all the tricks because the card itselves resamples in that case.
But that is not what I always want. I want to use my seperate dacs as well! That means dig. out!
So, problems should be gone when using the HD2-dig out, because this cards does everything between 44.1 and 192-16/24bits!
Can you tell me how you get your card working on w7 ult. 64bits(or is it 32bits?). What driver do you use?
Hope you can help ,

Hi Ivo,

I'm using filtered battery power with all electronic components (Except the pc -- at the moment ) and all I can say: There is a big difference between this system and conventional power supplies, it's worth the effort to optimize.

Georg

Hi George,

Can you tell/show us how you did the battery-filtering?
Thanks,

Hi Peter,

Still another addition to my last post...
Since I raised split filesize from 100 to 120, I had no pauses anymore, but.... a lot of times music stops in the last part of the last track of a totally played disc. (settings:quad/arcpred.,attended)
Raising the filesize to a higher figure such as f.i. 125, cures the premature stopping, but brings the pauses back!
Just a litlle more brainfood...

Best,

Ed

Hi Peter,

I have been quiet for a while. But it does not mean I could solve my (music)stutter problem computer-wise.
So my solution for the time beeing is playing double/arc instead of quad.
It runs smootly on double.

However, following one of your early comments, trying Q1/8(or higher) in stead of Q1/4 has influence indeed on the occurrance of the hickups with quad/arc
Raising to 12 or higher, the pauses stop beeing there! So there is a relationship.
Resuming here are the solutions:

1) Playing with the priority settings and
2) Changeing the Q1 setings to a higher level.

Looking forward to y5?
Cheers for now, and thanks for your help,

Ed

Peter,

And yes, since the time display worked cr*ppy or not at all, I did not swith it on anymore.

Hi Peter,

Stop laughing you plague and timethief!!! Hahahahahahaha(this is me laughing)
The sentence meant: sometimes you can hear the difficulties in the playback proces, but not resulting in a dropout. Stays a little cryptic maybe but it is how I feel it. I do not have stops anymore. At least with doubling/arc pred. With quad, stops are back...
Coverart is shown as walpaper, height:470, thumbnail cachesize 470
At attended (but does not show up)
Simple search
Tooltips
that's all......

Hi Peter,

Though I tickeld my computer deader and leaner than I ever did , most gain was found on the settings page of XXHEND itselves!
Playback suffers sporadicly from attemps to halt, trying to give up, but doesn't do so afterall. So the longer stops are about gone!
I could not lay a finger on the real cause of the stops, it has no relationship with processorspeed I am affraid. It takes 0 to1% of the proc. energy while playing from memory unattended or attended.. Maybe it has more to do with the amount of calculations the Atom 330/945 can do in a timespan. I don,t know really.
Think Í'll have to try a core 2 duo with a different chipset. But I hope you will find a way to get XX lighter in such a way that more computers can deal with all its merits.
Here are the settings I work with rather satisfying right now:

Double-Arc Prediction
Volume -6
Playerprio. :LOW
Treadprio. :NOTHING
Dac is :24/192
At 16 bits Dac needs 32bits
Stop services
Split File size: 120
Start engine during conversion
Q1,2 3 4 5  :  4,0,0,0,0

Cheers,

Ed

43  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Does Improving PC PSU and Reducing PC EMI/RFI Improve SQ? on: November 03, 2009, 11:03:24 pm
Hi Gerard,

The ASUS card is meant to be used through its analog outputs. By tossing the opamps you can modify its sound to your own taste if you think you should do so! The same with the opamp of the headphone-amp. The link of the card you name is about the Essence STX. The latest and the most interesting card is the Xonar Essence ST. So without the X! The STX is a pci-e card while the ST is the classic pci. It is a better way because it doesnot need the pci-e to pci conversion. Besides Asus claims to use a specially developped circuit to bring down RFI to a lower level. In the ST. which is intoduced in europe round Juli. (STX earlier in the year round Jan) Maybe the ST is not yet on the shelves in the US.
Btw. the ADconverter is NOT the Cirrus Logic cs5361, but it's better brother the CS 5381. So analog recording is in good hands too.

I must say the thing sounds really good in its stock outfit. Its up to you!
I myself changed my complete powersupply for for a big 60amps battery. The best way is to bring in the and 12Volts seperately on the Molex-plug. However there still was an SQ improvement by feeding the whole computer with the battery. Only my cumputer including the card draws about 2 3/4Amps!. I just use a two-position powerswitch which switches the powerline between off/charging and not charging/on. So I can play about the hole day uninterrupted if I like, and charge overnight with a little automatic 2,5Amps wallwartcharger.
Watch out that the voltage of the battery doesn't drop under the 11,2 Volts or so. Doede Douma (dddac.de) has a very simple device to control this.

Fun,

Ed

Hi Peter,

These are some logs from the same CD with the advised settings.(post3091)
I'll try now with the sended core app. app.
Btw, I do have the feeling that changing prioritysettings makes a difference!
