This post raises a question with me:.....so does the short Clarixa not perform optimally or does the Phisolater need some extra work?

(just pushing the limits evil)

32  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Intona gone again on: November 28, 2016, 05:19:55 pm
Played some tracks with and without Intona always using the long Clarixa  Wink.

Sound without the Intona is a mess. Lots of fuzziness implying echoes that are not there. Music also sound uninteresting.
With Intona the sound is firmer with better foundation on the low notes. Highs seem te be more blunt or better said less subtile than without.

What can we conclude? Not a lot, I'd rather play with the Intona. Well maybe XX needs different settings for with and without Intona, but I am winter-lazy now and won't compare  nea.

Ok,

I've been lagging behind for sometime, no clarixas, no xx pc, no ramdisk, no Win10 just win 7. I had pretty good sound though but could not recognize recommended settings and sound improvements with the intona. One could say I was one of the happy arrivals.
However curiosity, opportunity and some good fortune enabled me to get back in sync a little. I have to say the investments in the xx pc, ramdisk, 14393.0 and Clarixa have been very worthwhile. Like what you expect with improvements there is more of everything in the sound. For me the most important is that there is more musical enjoyment, tunes and instruments dance and sing and there is also more quietness and tone.

Now I am still using the Intona in the system. Maybe it is time to revisit a removal, but I found it to deliver a much cleaner sound overall. That is with and old fashioned xx pc, no Music server (yet), no B'Ass and no Phisolator in place.

Which brings me to the point that there have been so many separate improvements lately that less and less people actually have the full package (let alone improvements under development) and the number of permutations is now so big that every one of us probably has a different configuration. I have no clue anymore what is required to mimic some posted experiences.  The only way forward it the hard way, put in the work, experience it yourself and share it anyway. I too have been reluctant too to do that.

A bright note is that you can find your own way to excellence and do it with the means available to you. If time and money permit you can go for Peter's upgrades. They have never failed on me Happy!

You will probably find that a lower voltage tube than the 211 will give you even better results...in my limited experience the lower voltage tubes have more balance and nuance and are able to shift dynamically with more composure.  Tubes like the 6C33C have a low plate resistance (and 200V B+) and can consequently be made with a much lower output impedance (around 0.1R-0.2R depending on loading) and in this situation where you may end up trying to directly amplify the BD15 drivers in Peters speakers the low output impedance will certainly help.

Well, kind off. I do not think the low plate impedance (= usually lower plate voltages) is key here per sé, but that this provides for a better starting point for winding the output transformer. The winding ratio for a 6c33c can be much lower than ie a 211, hence better coupling and thus a wider frequency range (more high and more low). Of cource there is more to good sound than this.

Hoorah for the SET resurrection!

The GC amp I build long ago sounded tonally fine and precise, but could not match the sheer musicality of my ultra low power pedestrian SET amps (that is a SESPPaT: a Single Ended Small Power Pentode as Triode). As a matter of fact the SET sounded more dynamic and live (compression?).

I heard noises in the Altecs too, but most of it was in retrospect the result of an insufficiently shielded interconnect.

PS: Just saying (yes) : flat as a pancake is 10586.0. I (re)tried it yesterday and couldn't listen to it for exactly that reason. I can also tell you that some like 10586.0 explicitly for that so YMMV; it could give a kind of accuracy because of undecompressed depth (same as too wide and then getting inaccurate).

Aha, I think I encountered this flatness the past days, I already wondered if something was wrong with my ears or setup. Dynamics and balance are ok though a bit dry. It plays tunes too.

Have a few drinks first ...
prankster
Peter

FYI

After the drinks I was bald and tried the original entry to boot into 10568 RAM. All went smooth without error messages and no problems afterward booting back into the BASE version.

Booting into 10074 is however still not possible. In the boot error it says among other cryptic text "...a component has expired". I guess it has to do with the system date or something like that.

As expected this procedure worked as advertised!

Yet I forgot to uncheck the RAM box so I ended up with 3 extra 'memory' entries (for 10074, 10565 and 10586). I guess I can remove these safely since the existing ones pointed already to the proper file...

I can imagine that you have the same problem as me ... which log file is the actual one. Well :

Quit XXHighEnd;
Delete all the log files;
Start XXHighEnd;
Stop-RightClick - Boot Into;
Grab Log File.

Happy

Great tip!

I actually found two logs in the emptied directory.

See attachment,

We're getting all mixed up with these versions, but I followed your instructions without making the boot form 14388. Yet a selection of recent logs of the 2.xx\TemporaryData\ have been added to the zipfile that is attached.

If I understood well (by some PM you sent me), the problem emerged from abusively booting 14388 into MinOS. Or maybe you weren't sure about that, but anyway it could be a good reason because at least that is not any scenario to apply (TRIAL - Do not use etc. blah).

Whether this knowledge helps us, I don't know. But it is always good to find causes for a next time.

Can you by now confirm that this happened (be in 13488 TRIAL and go to MinOS from there) ?

It is true that I was under the impression at first that I booted into 10586. Then I went into MIN-OS and noticed after the boot that I was not in the proper OS version and rebooted immediately back into normal OS. This could have caused the problem, however I have no reference for this behavior, because it was the first time I tried to boot into a BASE version in order to MIN-OS it.

Coen - I did not read your text yet ... is it possible to make those screenshots smaller so they fit on people's screens ?
(show them on your own screen and make a screenshot of *that* would be easiest)

Thanks,
Peter

I'm working on that!

-update: and finished. I hope the resolution is enough-

42  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / RAM OS disk won't boot into BASE version on: August 18, 2016, 09:31:33 am
Hi Peter ea,

I've recently begun trying to take full advantage of the RAM OS disk capabilities. That is I've been booting into 10586RAM from the WIN10 TRIAL (DON'T USE) version 14333 and nothing more.
Now I am ready for MIN-OS in RAM and to achieve that I need to boot the 10586 BASE into MIN-OS. However for some strange reason I always end up back in the 14333 TRIAL version. When I try to boot into 10074 BASE I even run into an error.

I've added several screenfotos to illustrate this behavior and tried to give the pictures purposeful names.

As you can see the bootmenu of the reboot does NOT contain the 10586 BASE version that was chosen in XX before the reboot.

Does anyone recognize this behavior and what can I do about it?

regards, Coen

Hi

I ran into the same adversity as Juan and solved it the same way (with IsotoUSB). Patience is a virtue that is being called upon. Putting the ISO on my USB took as much time as the Win 10 update. It seemed to last forever but it actually was "only" 70 minutes.
Note that I had to reboot another time for the UAC thing.

Now I can start my vacation in peace!

Hi Peter,

If I recall correctly the different SFS had to do with the Silverstone being disconnected or maybe it was you who just wanted to compare with an older favorite. Doesn't matter, I had a great and very educating day in Oene! It was clear that the system was enormously responsive to any change in setting or configuration and that it sounded superb with the right ones.

One thing that still echoes in my mind is the impact of the B'Ass being on or (half?) off. On it lifts the sound spectacularly, everything gets much clearer en a certain poise or swung is added that makes the sound extra believable. Imho it could not save Windows 8, but that is another matter  naughty.

Thanks again for your hospitality and the listening opportunity!

Now let's see how far I can get with my system... Happy

Hi all,

After the crash of my music/audio PC, I took the opportunity to upgrade to the -old- XXHEPC. I haven't found the time yet to properly install all options like the music/audio pc devision or RAMDisk yet already the sound is in another universe.
I should have done this earlier :very happy:!

I'm also happy forum stuff is now making sense. even the intona is much more of an improvement than I experienced with my other PC.

Connected again!
