Title: Problems with sound with version 0.9z-6-1b
Post by: hf on October 10, 2011, 08:05:42 pm
Hello Peter,

Sound problems with the latest version 6-1b: no sound at all and after a while I get the message that engine #4 didn't start in time.

Version 6 runs fine (not 6-1 because for Home Premium users you don't recommend 6-1 but 6-1b)

Hope you can help.. but don't hurry because with version 6 my sound is fine! (just wanted to update to the latest possibilities)

Kind regards,

Hein

Hi Hein,

I can imagine that it is easy to think for a more new user that something like "no sound in the new version" can happen easily, but that really won't be the case. At least it never happened before. So, all I am saying is :

You must be way more extensive in laying out to us *why* you don't have sound. Haha, now laugh.

Of course by no means I am saying that I don't believe you, so it isn't about that. But it must be some very specific situation, just because I never heard of such a thing (and otherwise others will have complained as well - ir would have added something in this topic).

The fact that all seems to go without further messages right from the start already is "specific". So, that one seems key to me, or where we should start with this.

Notice that the new install can be prone to having different settings, depending how you setup things (meaning : they sure can be sustained, but maybe that did not happen in your situation). So, a first thing to check is your chosen sound device, because as we know under that hood things are not treated the most officially (still assuming your Lynx being in the chain).

Maybe this won't be easy for you, but if we state that all should normally work, you may be motivated to see where things are different, behave differently - that maybe it is caused by the file you want(ed) to play, etc.

All 'n all I am not sure where to start with this. So I hope you can help out a little. :)

Peter

PS: I sure by now know one reason : Pasting 0.9z-6-1b over 0.9z-6 ...
(which is not allowed and *will* end up in something like this !)

I usually get no soud when i install a new version because for some reason the q1 is too low (and i dont allways follow Peters insalling advice :() Xx starts playing in this case without sound.

Ending up in that same message ? ("Did not start in time ...")

Can't remember. I ususally hit stop asap after any lack of sound.

I occasionally get engine #4 time out messages though. Can't see any clear pattern (filesize maybe; an instance of xxengine#3 still busy with the previous track?). In line with the message it is allways at the start of a track. After stopping and restarting everything runs fine again.

Next time I will look closer.

regards, Coen

Sorry, Peter..

The z0.9-6 version was in the startup directory and therefore the XX engine was still in memory blocking exclusively my Lynx card.
Removed it from the startup directory, rebooted and now enjoying 6-1b

I hope you slept well... :)

Hello all. I've posted on the forum before but this is my first post as a new NOS1 async 24/768 DAC owner based in the United States(Massachusetts) :).  As Peter knows, I've had my share of growing pains, first with Mac software(never achieved successfully with a 2010 mac mini, thus far anyway) and now trying to get up to speed with XXHighEnd on a custom built desktop PC. I've run into this very same problem of no sound, followed much later by an error message telling me that "Engine #4 did not start within the expected time frame." All that I've used is version 0.9-z-61b as recommended for my DAC. I'd be happy to hear if anyone has a solution to this problem. I wonder if I should try a different version of XXHE to see if that corrects it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Esau

Hi there Esau,

Sorry to be late with some response (FWIW), but I think 0.9z-6c is the latest version. So, that's for starters.

Next, assuming you are using this latest (combination of) versions, I think I can recognize by now what can be happening, although it is hard for me to copy the behavior;

When this is happening to you, and the heck you can't tell whatever you could be doing wrong, please try a reboot. Otherwise, first try to change the sample rate in the Control Panel. If that gives you an error, something within Windows occupies the device (as it seems !) and this is the problem you actually experience. A reboot now for sure will help.

I never have this, probably because -somehow- I know what to do in order to let all behave. Not that this is a normal procedure, but at this moment I can't tell what people (e.g. you) do to incur for the problem.

Please let me know whether a reboot helps in your case, or otherwise what "creates" the problem, might you recognize it.
I will do all to help when I can, but some things are more difficult, and this seems to be one of them.

Thanks for posting this outloud, which really is for the better (maybe others can help out ?).
Again, thanks,
Peter

esimms...
Does it play if you use mixed (Plain mixed, not mixed contiguous) in the memory organization?
It could sound a bit like what I am experiencing...

I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Esau,

I only now realize ...
I have emails from you where you told me all is up and running. So, if it now is not you shoud at least tell me since when or what situation that is. I mean, that could be helpful !

Peter
