Title: PS2 Mouse not working on XXHighEnd PC
Post by: briefremarks on November 19, 2015, 06:54:57 am
Just bought an XXHighEnd PC and NOS 1a from a member, and am trying to set everything up.  One issue I have is that the PS2 mouse does not work.  It is not recognized--no mouse shows up in the Device Manager.  Sometime a stationary pointer shows up and does not move; other times there is no pointer at all.

I can plug in a USB mouse and the mouse shows up and works.  Wondering if there is BIOS setting I need to check or some setup to get the PS2 mouse to be recognized.  The machine is running Windows 8 as shipped from Phasure.  Thanks for any help.

I actually have the same problem on my xxhe pc. I was not too bothered by it so I use my usb mouse. However, would be nice if there is a solution.

Guys, is it a "pure" PS2 mouse or is it one using a PS2 adapter?

Hans,

I'm running Windows 8, not sure if this is an OS related issue.  I've looked on-line, and all the fixes suggest disabling the mouse, disconnecting and restarting.  The problem is that the mouse does not even show up in the Device Manager to be able to do anything.

Pure PS2 mouse, no adapter

A ps2 mouse will not work unless it is plugged in before the computer is turned on.  They are not plug and play devices and as soon as you use a USB mouse the ps2 mouse may not function until the usb mouse is removed and the computer restarted.

If you are using a ps2 dongle or adapter, they are not all created the same and some work and some just don't.

Anthony (acg) has a valid point because for sure not all adapters work well. Otherwise :

There is something with attaching the mouse at the wrong point in time (so to speak). I myself never ran into the issue, but others did and it is something about :

When you first happily use an USB mouse and later attach the PS2 connected mouse then things at first don't work. Reboots seem to help but nobody (AFAIK) was able to tell me the exact procedure.
What I always told myself is : Never attach any new device in the state of Minimized OS because devices often can't install properly, if at all.
MinOS is the state of XXHighEnd showing that button in the top of the left (top) pane labeled "Minimize OS"; when it is colored Red you're in Minimized OS. Blue is normal (and clicking the button will change the state (implying a reboot)).

Peter

PS: By now I see that Anthony has been way ahead of me ...

Hans, you should be bothered slightly, because the USB connected stuff is to be regarded (theoretically) not the best for SQ.

Also notice that the whole USB lot (USB2 and USB3) can be shut off in the BIOS (better for SQ again) if you only use a PCI interface card for USB (like our famous Silverstone - but that is just an example).

Peter

Peter, thanks for pointing out that I needed to reboot in normal OS mode, not minimized OS mode.

Here's what fixed it for me.  De-selected minimized OS in XXHE.  Removed USB mouse during shutdown.  After reboot in normal OS mode, the PS2 mouse started working.  Selected minimized OS and restarted again.  PS2 mouse still works.

Great that it worked out and thanks for the feed back !

I guess I now won't forget the procedure myself. :)

Hi Peter,

I will get it to work I suppose if I get the right usb/ps2 adapters (I suspect they are not the correct ones now) or if I just get myself a pure ps2 keyboard and mouse (I believe it is still possible to buy it).

Hi Hans,

I don't know what it really takes to have "wrong" adapters, but you're surely not the only one.

Good luck !

Hi Peter,

I found some additional stuff on the internet on connecting ps2 hardware so I am going to check if that works. If it does then I will post my findings.

As a side remark: given the apparently huge differences between win8 and the various win10 versions as have been discussed on this forum, the matter USB vs. PS2 seems a bit futile. But, as I learned from you in earlier posts, all changes matter and we do not know if it is really a small or insignificant change until we try, so that is what I will do

You are completely correct there, Hans.
And if one doesn't apply anything of it all, one also doesn't perceive a difference in anything.
