Will do.
977  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 0.9z-1 HDCD problem on: June 11, 2010, 12:40:03 pm
Hi Roy. The albums play fine here too once I edit the analysis.dat file to say No. What I don't understand is how an album ripped as  wave files gets coded as hdcd in the analysis.dat file. In the last year, I have been secure ripping using mostly default settings of dbpower amp. Not sure EAC will make a difference?

Also I did not seem to have this problem with 9zb but don't know for sure cause I may not have played an improperly coded disc in 9zb.

Just had another error message because an album was improperly coded as HDCD in the xxanalysis.dat file.

Welcome Simpsimon. I have looked long and hard at those Musiland dacs. I asked the producer if they would support XXhighend kernel streaming and was told that it could not. You say, however, that you've already used it with XX so my first question is which sound engine are you using in xx, #3 or #4? I'm pretty sure that the consensus around here is that engine #4, kernel streaming, produces the best sound. Click on your settings tab and the Output section will tell you which engine you are currently using. Also, which version of xx are you using? Makes a difference when trying to explain things.

Thanks man. The edit works.

I have an album ripped about a year ago as wave files with Windows Media player (I think). In both 9zb and z1 this album trips the HDCD notice when I hit play, which is then followed by several "engine 3 stopped working errors" and lastly, a "HDCD Decoding Problem. Playback Must Stop" error. Very weird cause this is not an HDCD and no other album causes this to happen.

Ok, why do we upsample from hires anyway (say, from of 88.2) ?
Maybe if we have a clear answer to this, it is better to see what "settings" must be there.
IMHO we only can do this for higher resolution. But even me myself wonder how much beneficial (audible) it will be.

Well, what say you folks that are able to up-sample a high rez file, how does that increased resolution sound compared to no up-sampling?

It is my conclusion that this just can't be solved otherwise than specifying an output rate. So, this time not for conveniency (Release Notes), but because otherwise the Slider Setting will just be non-sense.

Hmm ...

Thanks Peter, I wouldn't worry too much about it. At some point a new dac will just have to happen......

Yeah, dac is set in XX to 24/96 not 192.

Even an e.g. 96KHz file most probably came from an original 192KHz or higher file. This may mean that it has been band limited within itself (read : the inaudible frequencies above 20KHz have been filtered out). In this case it is useless to upsample ("filter" !!) the file for this reason. It won't do a thing, with a chance of destroying.
When the file was not band limited, it means that theoretically spoken it still needs a filter to operate well. In that case upsampling it is a good idea.

Since you won't know whether the file is already band limited or not, it is better not to upsample for the "filtering" reason.
It is better to upsample the file for the resolution reason ..

Does this mean that even with a "band limited within itself" 24/96 file it will still sound better upsampled because of the increased resolution?  If so, wouldn't it make sense to rip a redbook cd as a 24/96 with a ripper like dbpoweramp?

Thanks Roy. Guess I need to learn to read better!

My dac is 24/96. With a proprietary connection between the source and the dac it can play sample rates up to 192. I do not have this connection so I should only be able to play 24/96.

With z1, if I 2x the sample rate of a 24/96 file, XX shows 192 in the display and the file plays. ( how can that be!) If I then tick arc prediction the slider at the bottom of xx moves but I get no sound. This is with scheme 2. If I try scheme 3, I get many "Engine 3 stopped working" errors, but about 1 in 6 times I get the same results with scheme 2.

Because I have playlists that have both redbook and high rez files, z1, in its present configuration doesn't work for me, cause I use arc prediction for all the redbook stuff. Is there a plan to be able to choose what type of file gets upsampled?

Never before could I play so LOUD. Unlimited LOUD! At the same time the sound is extremely detailed and natural, without any boomy bass or hard treble.

Yeah, I've now a new dilema: Whats the "correct" volume for the type of music playing? Rock, of course is easy, but classical is where I'm scratching my head. Hillary Hahn, Bach for Solo Violin, there is a point where I know that the volume is just so "unnaturally" loud, but it sounds so freakin' good at such high volume that I have to remind myself to turn it down to more natural levels, where it also sounds so freakin' good but different, not as revealing. Its like suddenly having an auditory microscope!

its all a bit dizzying over here....... wacko

Thanks Peter.
