Title: Tweaking Windows 7 Dead
Post by: earflappin on November 08, 2009, 03:10:08 pm
For those of you who are interested in tweaking Windows 7 so it runs more "dead"..... I've found the following site to be pretty helpful.  This together with Peter's Vista tweaks (most of which I've found work on Windows 7 - but some are now located in different parts of the registries) should get most of us pretty far down the road to having a minimalistic OS.

This guy has tweaked all of MS's operating systems and provides a pretty simple approach.  Plus he offers a number of flavors of tweaks. Be sure to create a restore point so that if his tweaks go too far you can quickly get back to where you were.

I've already done Peter's Vista tweaks on my Win7 64 installation.  Next, I'm going to try Black Viper's "bare bones" configuration.  I'll report back.

Okay....I successfully implemented the "barebones" Black Viper services configuration, but with RDC in manual.  Works great.  Nice reduction in CPU in services and I/O activity. This guy has similar configs for WinXP and Vista.

I don't think further tweaking of W7 as discribed in "Peter's tweak vista dead" topic, don't lead to more SQ improvements.

It just lighten the weight of it (in SIZE, I mean), not in CPU power, nor disc I/O.

I use my PC for just about everything, lots of software, no virus-scan.
But when I play xx, its all dead quiet (don't have to switch off anything)

Maybe not Roy, but I see no downside of skinnying down Win7 as much as possible if all one is doing is using it to play audio...

BTW, have you experimented with FLAC vs WAV on XXHE - is there any SQ difference?

You can set your zalman to barebone setting, always better to do so, I can not because I us the PC for other puposes too.
I only try to say, it won't help SQ further.

on the FLAC vs WAV:

This should not sound any different, but welcome to AUDIO WALHALLA, keep an openmind and trust only your ears.
Like I said should, untill someone has an other opion, I believe this is the same.

And btw xx always plays WAV.
Because it is converted to WAV before playback

Thanks Roy.  I didn't know that - i.e. that XXHE converts to WAV before playback commences.
