Was browsing the web for i2s, spdif, usb and transformations amongst them while I accidentally found out the following on http://www.zerooneaudio.com/faqs.htm: Yes. The Ti48 also has an S/PDIF digital output. The data sampling rate will be limited to 24 bits/96kHz via S/PDIF as this is the limit of the S/PDIF standard (whereas the Zero One Audio I2S data transfer allows a sampling rate of up to 24 bits/192kHz to be sent to the Ar38). Can someone comment on this? I did read SPDIF standard, but could not find anything of the sort there. Maybe I have missed something??? |

No, no, no. I do not have HiFace yet at all. My comparisons are based on my current gear which is laptop+quick dock with spdif out. I am preparing myself to order HiFace. But actually, the relations among Foo/XM/XX will remain anyways I guess. Yes, CPlay with its crazy cue sheets is also killing me, but its sound is interesting - I tried to upsample from 44 --> 192 and it actually beats XX to my mind in terms of dynamics. The shortage of CPlay is that it has the overall sound sig moved a bit up - less bass and more highs if compared to XX. I do not know what is better so far. Actually, I do not know why XX is limited to 88 and 176 kHz upsampling and not allowing to do 192.

Actually I like XMPLay better than Foobar if we talk about WASAPI path. But XX beats both. XMPlay and Foobar are more sharp and colder than XX therefore I myself consider XX as better. Also XX has better pronounced bass, I would say it is more intelligent than XM's or Foobar's.

Hello jkeny, If I could pitch in here as I have experience of both the Musiland 01US & Hiface units. I'm a tweaker so I bought these with the intention of getting the best sound out of them. Both use asynchronous USB which attracted me.
First, I bought the Musiland & was impressed with the stock sound but then I heard what a difference in SQ I got by supplying an external 5V supply instead of USB 5V. This set me on a path of PS mods - I'll provide links if anyone is interested. The result was a transformation.
BUT, I knew the limitation of the Musiland DAC was the audio clock generation (the various audio clocks are synthesised from one 24MHz clock, AFAIR) & I heard about the HiFace which had this problem addressed - it uses 2 physical low jitter clocks on-board. Stock, this sounded as good as the fully modded Musiland. When I modded the internal PS of the HiFace - it now soared in SQ - smooth & silky, like very good analogue with lots of detail So, have you tried Monitor 02 US - this is the second version. I am wondering how it might compare with HiFace unit? Based on your post, HiFace is better out of box than Musiland 01US. Ivo |

Hello Tony S, I just started using the Musiland Monitor 02 US dac/usb-spdif converter that does asynchronous quite well at around $135- $150. I'm still trying to get familiar with the unit, works well as a stand alone dac and enjoying it with my NOS dac. I haven't had too much time to do some serious listening but from what I'm hearing, in my less than ideal listening room, is quite amazing. There are other versions, a dac only unit and a converter only unit, that are usb powered. The 02 is AC powered. Once I get a chance to do some more listening and trying Peter's latest software upgrade I'll post my thoughts on the Musiland. Hope this helps So, are you still using Musiland 02 US? Are you able to run enigne#4 with it? Describe please your XX setup with this DAC. I am interested if it is possible to run engine#3 and engine#4 with it in DAP and QAP modes??? Ivo |

So summarizing:
HiFace with the current latest XX (0.9y-5-06) works with engine#3 (using HiFace's WASAPI support) in DAP and QAP modes if DAC is capable of 24/88 and 24/176 on 16/44 material.
HiFace with the current latest XX (0.9y-5-06) works with engine#4 (using HiFace's KS driver) in 16/44 mode only because engine#4 currently does not support 24 bits. Hopefully, next XX versions will open up HiFace's potential in DAP and QAP modes also with engine#4.
The above should be true for XP, Vista and 7.
Seems like it is time to order one for myself....(sitting in Vista, able to test in XP as well)

Talking about opamp impact on SQ these days..... I replaced the stock ones in my Dr.DAC2 (Audiotrak) to OPA627BP and AD797BRZ and you know.... the sound changed dramatically. I started to revisit my CDs.... it was like if I have bought something new in my setup and actually I did - these were several opamps...  One small step.... Ivo |

Boleary,
When AP was introduced it was another method of upsampling compared to the *regular* so that is why I asked. Actually, my listening experience (so far with engine#3) says that it is better to use upsampling. Music gets closer, it gets spatial and more dynamic compared to raw 16/44. I guess higher-end standalone CDP all use some kind of upsampling.
I am waiting when engine#4 will work with HiFace then I will see which one is better for me: engine#3 in QAP OR engine#4 in QAP.

I'm sending out a modded HiFace for evaluation & I've modded another unit for somebody that I'm sending out tomorrow. I tested it today in a recording studio using SPDIF out from my Inspiron 6000 laptop to a Tascam DAC unit & playing through ATC speakers. The sound engineer said it sounded fantastsic & ordered one from me Thanks for answer. I am more interested in how HiFace can be used exactly with XX player. And BTW, I live in EU, where can I order it? Cannot find any links on their site? |
