46  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: 32/352 very slow sound on: May 12, 2012, 01:00:59 am
Peter,

I guess I found it...

Got 24/352 native DXD file from 2L. Played it back 'identically' on XX and on JPLay. Sound is OK, not slow. This proves that driver works OK.
I guess there is something in the way XX up-samples to 352 and 384 with ArcPred.

Peter,

With WASAPI (Engine3) is exactly the same. While 32/176 sound OK, 32/352 is slow.

Do you need log files?

Peter,

Tried just. DAC needs 24 and 32 bits. Both sound the same - slow. I checked, I have latest Young driver.

Could it be a problem with XX?

Hey, others! Has anyone tried feeding 32/352 or more into John Kenny's modified Hiface with Young driver from XX?

OK, got it. Yes, I guess tried also that, but not yesterday. Let me do some more tests tonight. @ work now.

I was using Hiface initially at DAC = 24/192.  All was fine. Now, for a while run at DAC = 32/192. All fine also. Sound the same.

Well, I have not tried 'normal' drivers because those are 24/192. As John mentioned, only with Young's we can try up to 32/384.

Everyday I play in 4x (32/176) and it is ok with both normal and Young's driver.

Have not tried Engine3 thou.

Yes, I tried Adaptive with 2048 and Q1 = 1. The same. When I tried Engine3, the whole thing crashed.

Hi,

I am using https://sites.google.com/site/hifacemods/home-1/jkdac32 which built on the famous HiFace unit. Lately, it was discovered that it sounds better if used with Young's drivers (Young is 32/384 unit). Also, lately it was announced that John's remakes based on HiFace work well with Young's drivers and can be run at 32/384.
Problem: when I try to do so, the sound is somewhat 2x times slower. I run at KS Special 32/352 which is 8x upsampling from XX. Tried out many variants with buffers, Q1 and other. Nothing helps. Any ideas? Thanks.

55  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Alternative to anti-virus on: February 09, 2012, 11:56:33 am
Hi,

Yesterday tried few antiviruses, namely "Microsoft Security Essentials" and "Panda Cloud Antivirus". Both are free.

At the end, decided to stay with Panda as it is possible to stop it easily, however, one process must be added to "non-stoppable" in XX. Liked this approach because no updates are needed, all is somewhere there and it is pretty light and it turns OFF automatically once there is no network available (exactly how I listen to music).

Ms Essentials seemed to be harder to stop as well as it activates on behalf of itself Windows update feature and leaves it ON!!! I do not want that.

OK, just wanted to let know at least one XX compatible AV.

What are you others using?

56  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Total Time on: February 08, 2012, 03:16:31 pm
Peter,

Maybe having a separate section in your forum called "Wishlist" would be great.

This is candidate for the above list:

I would like to see the total time of the playlist. Like when you insert CD, you see total minutes. Simple as that.

Thanks,

Ivo

Well, I was using Avira. It was not possible to stop it. Only uninstall.

But isn't this the problem also for XX. I mean, we exclude antivirus from stopping list because it just cannot be???

Isn't this the same as "copy to XX disc first" when XX is in the C directory???

Not so sure. I think it is true when there are WAVs initially.

There is also a FLAC.exe in the XX directory, is this the same software?

It is command line version. I use GUI version that makes the process convenient.

My theory is that XX sounds best if it only needs to read WAVs and start playing w/o any other activities.

Hi,

Some time ago I uninstalled antivirus software as it cannot be stopped by XX in "stopping services" mode and because it has bad impact on SQ.
After a while living w/o this SW, I start seeing various fake sites jumping around my PC, so:

Is there another SW that can help and which is stoppable easily by XX when chosen to stop services?

OK guys, finally I can describe my way of turning FLACs into WAVs before playback. This is relevant to those who store music in FLACs. In my case, doing this improves SQ. My music is located on external 2.5" usb powered usb drive and I listen unattended in MinimizedOS mode. Other details are in my sig. Below are steps that need to be followed to make this process convenient to use.

Setup

Step 1:
Download and install this: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/flac/flac-1.2.1b.exe. Do it in default location.
Step2:
Make new directory in C: drive. I call it PLAYBACK.
Step3:
Go to Programs and find FLAC Frontend application under FLAC. Run it. Uncheck "Delete input files" if it is checked and change output directory to "C:\PLAYBACK". Exit the application.
Step4:
Create new text file in C: drive. I call it "Play.txt". Rename it to "Play.cmd".
Step5:
Right click the created file and select "Edit". Paste the below lines into it. Change the last line according to where your XXHighEnd is located. Save the file.

c:
cd PLAYBACK
del *.wav

cd "c:\Program Files\Flac"
"FLAC frontend.exe"

C:\XXHighEnd-09-z6-1\XXHighEnd.exe

Step6:
Create shortcut of the "Play.cmd" file on the desktop.

Usage

This is maybe specific to my way of using XXHighend, but it may work out for you as well.
When I want to listen, I double-click the created shortcut (Step6) and first thing that happens is that "Play.cmd" deletes WAV files from PLAYBACK directory (it clears WAVs from previous session).
At the same time it launches "FLAC frontend.exe" which is graphical software and now you can click "Add files" and select your music in FLAC format you want to listen to.
When you have opened files, press "Decode" and what "FLAC frontend.exe" does is it decodes FLACs into WAVs and puts them into C:\PLAYBACK. Once it is done, close "FLAC frontend.exe".
At this moment XXHighEnd is launched. Close the black window (the one with output from Play.cmd). At XX, using "Explorer" button, load WAV files from C:\PLAYBACK into XXHighEnd. Play.

If something is unclear, write!
