Hi David,

Quote
Do you know why this would work once after a reboot but after that, I would continually lose the connection?

Is it possible, please, to create a new topic for this with adequate description (unless you already started a topic about this problem - which I recall vaguely, then please put this in there). Also denote in there which XXHighEnd version this is about, OK ?

I ask, because this problem is a different one , IMO.
If you don't see me respond on it today, then please retry tomorrow. I am going to find some beers right now ...

Best regards,
Peter

PS:

I removed the Gateway numbers in NormalOS like Zheng did and now everything seems to be working as it should with "persist" off.
Just saw this update. If all is fine, then don't bother, obviously. And congrats in that case !

Oh, I just noticed that I have my Nervous Rate at 10. So yes, I did this since it was possible to save it to other than 100 anyway (see 2.10 Release Notes).

I hope my Sig is up to date now. Happy

Among them the Balanced Load of 42 which I just found like that minutes ago and I must be using that for many weeks by now, although I can't really remember the merits of it.

No ! I am wrong here !!
By now I can't even tell how and where I looked, but I have it at 52.
I suppose looking after 3 hours of sleep and a party last night, isn't the best idea. But I caught up sleep a bit and now I thus see 52. scratching

Quote
When I set the Balanced Load (just trying settings), the result is (-).

Thank you Stanley ! (although I just noticed myself while working on an other PC and then checked by own).

Btw, I am sure I was also influenced by the fact that since 14393.0 we also can go *under* the 42 with effect. So I recall that in some XXHighEnd version I had to exclude 42 from the "application" because else we couldn't dial in the normal situation. For those who like it - you must dial somewhat further down to see additional effect. I recall 35. But careful because when set too low, your PC will barely run and become too unresponsive. Als always activate "Boost at XXHighEnd Startup".

Thanks and regards,
Peter
1024  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Using filters with hires files... at their native rates on: March 25, 2018, 03:43:21 pm
Hi Mani,

Quote
Peter, I would have expected a 24/176.4 file being played back at its native rate to sound the identical, irrespective of which filter was selected in XX. But this does not seem to be the case.

Good question ...

I am sitting back here for 5 minutes, but have yet to come up with an answer ...
Because of that I'll need to look in the program and trace down what happens in which situation, but one answer would be that Custom applies the filter regardless, hence as not being part of the upsampling step (Arc Prediction itself does) - but which does not explain the difference between Nothing and Arc Prediction. That is, I must take it that between these two latter you also perceive a difference.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Zheng - Very well done !!

I'll give this link as well, because it coincidentally / luckily has the very same solution for a very different problem :
Re: A secure way to prevent Windows 10 , updates on the audio PC

To understand better what this is about - and when you don't have a faint heart, also read this : Peter's small addition.

1027  Ultimate Audio Playback / Sound Quality XXHighEnd Related / 12 | Keep LAN Services settings on: March 25, 2018, 11:52:04 am

General Background :

We have the Normal Operating System environment (Normal OS) where all is normally active and we have the "made for Audio" Operating System environment that minimzes it and is named MinOS. XXHighEnd allows us to boot ino either (back and forth if necessary).

We have Unattended Playback (no GUI or anything active) which dynamically shuts of parts of the Operating System and which parts are switched on again when Playback stops / is stopped.

Parts which have been cut out in MinOS obviouly won't (need to) stop when Unattended Playback is initiated because they don't even exist. Notice that they thus also can't be started in MinOS (they are not there anywhere). If we need them or want them to be active in MinOS, we have to go to Normal OS to switch them on again due to a next boot into MinOS.
Do notice that while in Normal OS and all being On, initiating Unattended Playback will dynamically shut off what's been told (by you) to shut off and that this (all !) is switched on again when Unattended Playback stops.

Now :

The LAN settings comprise of two cooperative settings (see on the first line) :

1. Keep LAN Services ACTIVE (red). Meaning : the LAN environment is kept when booting from Normal OS into MinOS.
2. Set Persist to INACTIVE (blue). Meaning : When you go to Unattended (MinOS is implied) the LAN shuts down except for the denoted exceptions (the LAN-parts of it) like "Use Remote Desktop".

The above in different wording :
When we boot into MinOS the LAN services are not taken out hence all of the LAN will be just there.
When we start Unattended Playback the LAN is shut down (you'd want that for better SQ) because you did not tell the system to "persist" in Keeping the LAN.
Any activity requiring the LAN will start that (and shut down again if applicable).

Now we make this of it :

1. Keep LAN Services ACTIVE (red). Meaning : the LAN environment is kept when booting from Normal OS into MinOS.
2. Set Persist to ACTIVE (red). Meaning : When you go to Unattended (MinOS is implied) the LAN does not shut down.

The above in different wording :
When we boot into MinOS the LAN services are not taken out hence all of the LAN will be just there.
When we start Unattended Playback nothing changes to the status of the LAN because we told to "persist" the "keeping" state.
The LAN now will never shut down, whatever you do.
Notice that while staying in MinOS you can change the state of Persist and it will be respected (but don't change it while Unattended Playback is going on at that moment).

Again an other scenario :

1. Keep LAN Services INACTIVE (blue). Meaning : the LAN environment is cut from the OS when going from Normal OS to MinOS.
2. Set Persist to INACTIVE (blue) or ACTIVE (red) whatever you like ... it doesn't do a thing because there are no LAN services available anywhere.

The above in different wording :
When we boot into MinOS the LAN services are taken out and that can't come back, unless going to Normal OS again (where they will be "in" by standard).

The remaining lines you see speak for themselves when you read the ToolTips on them. They will related to the native LAN setting as explained above, and let's say that only when the LAN is initially On when going to MinOS, the other settings can be used to differentiate in necessary services.
1028  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Remote Desktop issues on: March 25, 2018, 11:33:37 am
Is it correct to assume that since you do not have "Persist" checked, you lose the ability to change the volume or use "next" track because the LAN drops the connection?

No ...
I know how confusing this combination of settings is, but it works the other way around because you must SET things the other way around (or understand what the setting implies) :

Side note on this one : I am not sure whether Keep LAN = INACTIVE combines with "Use Remote Desktop", but I'm inclined to say Not.

That was all. Happy

Peter
1029  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Tidal Problems on: March 25, 2018, 11:17:56 am
Hi Arvind,

Again I can't do much with this because you take too much assumptions without shown proof. Of course, if you'd know for sure what you are doing I'd believe you unconditionally. But you don't and so I can't. Happy

You mix up so many things in one go now (and you don't see it). Here's your sequence again :

1. Throw all out once again, please;

2. Search for normal albums (not MQA !) - Prepare one and one only.

3. Move that to your Tidal folder. Reattempt this when you receive an error message (as the message itself advises) unless it really can't be done and then show me the message.

4. Take care that on the Audio PC you have denoted the Tidal folder. Go there explicitly by means of the Search button and the "Tidal" RightClick selection.

5. Play the album for a bit, and play it on your Audio PC *only*.

Note : Your music Server PC was not set up for SSXHighEnd Audio Playback (never mind you think it was) - so don't even try it (and lock out things mean while !).

You will see that this works now.
That assumed, proceed to step two. Pick that step yourself, as long as it implies one new step only and not four+ (really !) like now. Postpone MQA as long as possible because it implies more potential anomaly. First get used to Tidal itself, please.
We could call it baby steps for now but it is not about that. It is about the one thing obfuscating the other and with new things nobody can bear that. no

Best regards,
Peter (here to help out further)
1030  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Time Stability/Performance Index 2.10 on: March 25, 2018, 10:56:53 am
Hi Colin,

Maybe this is so, maybe it isn't (because I can't reason how it would work and it already was so for you (say lately)) and so the question :

Is it correct that you still can get it to work via the normal procedure for it ?

But really, as this is an OS "BCD" setting, I can't imagine how a new XXHighEnd version can destroy it without something actively dealing with it.

If you have further findings, please let me know.
Thank you !
Peter

Can you tell me please if you have your signature updated?
With SFS 5.19 are you using Custom Filter (which one?) or Arc Prediction?

Hi Juan,

I now updated my signature. The items surrounded by * are the changed ones since last time.
Among them the Balanced Load of 42 which I just found like that minutes ago and I must be using that for many weeks by now, although I can't really remember the merits of it. It is so anyway and I like the sound very much (in consistency with the other settings), so I let it be.

Filtering is just Arc Prediction again and I am quite confident that the lower 5.19 allows for this "permanently" (sound is more smooth because of it and with Arc Prediction it gets the necessary snap again).

Best regards,
Peter

I am wondering if Remote Server Port in xxhe settings needs to be filled.

Hmm ... No. That is in there for over two years I think, but is for future use. Maybe I only see now that it should be disabled or "hidden". Sorry about this confusion.

you are infinitely patient.

You are infinitely eager which makes me eager to help.
But now I have to go, so I will learn later that you managed !
And with that normal PC for remote control it is also the most normal now which is what (almost) everybody uses.

Maybe also briefly examine router (firewall) settings. No wait ... (but Yes, do) ... "we" have the connection direct ! not via the router ! Again :

iPad -> Wifi -> Router -> Cable -> Music Server PC -> Cable -> Audio PC.

This is literal !

Best regards and you will get there !

What you see below I use myself. The theoretical improvement for you would be to activate Persist, but it shouldn't be necessary. Remember, set this when in Normal OS and then go to MinOS (AND never test it in Normal OS !).

Hi Zheng,

Maybe I didn't understand your last post, but :

How does music pc control XXHE on audio pc? Via another RD session?

Yes !

iPad -> Wifi -> Router -> Cable -> Music Server PC -> Cable -> Audio PC.

Clear a little ?

1035  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Tidal Problems on: March 24, 2018, 09:01:40 am
Arvind,

I checked it for you, and it is so that a Prepared Album automatically changes from the "native" folder to the \Streams folder. Well, almost automatically because it needs a refresh of the Library Area (like DoubleClick in the search field accomplishes that).

So first one below shows the end result of Shades of Deep Purple. The Book of Taliesyn wasn't touched yet.
Second shows The Book of Taliesyn when it was Prepared.
Third shows the lot after a refresh.
And all is still in the Intermediate Structure.
