No, I leave the Triumph (car) in the garage, and go for a Subaru meet instead. very happy

Well, good Chris. Happy listenings !
15602  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Fireface 400 settings on: June 10, 2007, 12:40:30 am
Ticks.
The lower the better the sound, until you went too far. So 128 is on the safe side, but 96 should do also.
64 may be too critical. 48 *is* too critical.

48 is allright for not Doubling.

So, you're good to go !
15603  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Fireface 400 settings on: June 09, 2007, 11:40:21 pm
Buffer should be 128 to be on the safe side. 48 IMO just won't work at 88K2 (Doubling).

The Lock just won't be there because the PC as an input won't do that. Note that no lock is just okay.
Wether it's set as Master or not doesn't matter (it just will be -> same as no lock).

Oh, never mind the 48K in below settings ... just watched a movie ...  Tongue

Go out, take your cell phone and ask your wife to do it ?

Great Chris !
15605  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / And then there was ... Engine #4 on: June 09, 2007, 03:24:54 pm

I can't help myself. Happy

Since I'm getting the hang of things a bit I can promise you Engine #4 by, say, August, September (of 2007  Cool).
I know, I didn't even finish #1 and #2 for production, I'm merely working on #3 for beta, but #4 ... THAT will be a different beast.

Actually I must keep it to  teasing teasing teasing for now, but anyway ...

#4 will be based on a so far never before used principle giving ... well ...
... the theoretically impossible further to improve audio playback ?

too much !

15606  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Check your Firewire connection ! on: June 09, 2007, 03:04:32 pm

Sadly, I can now confirm that even the Firewire conenction can make a huge difference ...
I mean "sadly", because before I thought this was a consistent thing for playback quality. It now appears that it just is not.

Sidenote : no matter what, I can measure bitperfect playback in either case, so it can be about jitter only (or some high grade phenomenon and the lack of intelligence to recognize it).

So here goes :

The first time I noticed "a" difference, was when my Firewire PCI interface (of 10 years old btw) seemed at its end of life, because more and more I had to switch the cable from the one to the other connection on it, in order to let my Fireface recognize the proper connection. Note that I'm on a 10m Firewire cable here (the Firewire is externally powered), and for that matter things will be at the critical level anyway. So :

So at one time I couldn't either connection going anymore (while before the "rest" of a connection helped dntknw), I moved the PCI 6 months old Firewire interface card from my Vista machine (which machine was temporarily out of order anyway).
The most strange things happened with this : some -which I call "Crazy" again- channel separation seemed to appear suddenly. Huh ?
 grazy

This was so much occurring (wrong, *happening*) that from now on I could listen to rather perfect "stereo" information at listening at the couch right in front of one of the Orphean horns (at watching movies with the family), and therewith some 60 degrees out of line with the other one. Mind you, at this angle there is no way to see even a part of the throad, while looking right into the one of the first mentioned.

Another sidenote : you most probably recall a.o. my words all over the place about such and so good playback whatever. Wrong ...
Wrong again (how many times is this supposed to happen in the future ? heat)

Where this was the first occasion, here came the second :
My Vista PC was out of order, because it was awaitening a new motherboard. Of course I got one with on board Firewire. Convenient.
Well, got it up and running, and although Vista sounds different than XP anyways, it did not sound good anywmore at all. Not this day, not the other day, no day.
Note that I'm always listening to one situation for many days, in order to be sure it's not the mood, the booze, or whatever may influence which shouldn't.
But then I gave up on it.

Now, on this mobo are two Firewire connections : one directly connected to the mobo at the back, and one somewhere in the middle of the board, leading to the back with a cable.
Problem gone !
So that was the third indication.

Btw, the Vista machine is close to the equipment, and uses a 1m or so Firewire cable.

As always at expecting things which may differ or seem to be different, I told this to Bert. Well, that's a difficult one, because now we are in the area of subjective matters, and no way of measuring, knowing the logic or what else to check it remotely.

But as I just heard from Bert, he can, say, copy my behaviour.

Well Bert, what's your advise on this ?
Currently I can't do better than : checkout a few situations, and at least buy a (cheap ?) PCI card. The differences are enormeous, but they are hard to qualify. Channel separation would be one of them, a bit depending on Bert's findings. The other seems to be tiny sound. Less full.

Apart from the fact that I can't explain these huge differences, I think it is a sad thing that it is so by itself.
Otoh I achieved an improvement once more.

If everything is allright, this should help you : http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=17.msg40#msg40

Does it ?

Note : this should be the same as the Zip file which is contained at the bottom of the Install notes topic (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=11.0) so if you didn't do that one, that will be your problem. Otherwise, see above (and then appearently it's not the same ...  Happy)...

On the screen copies :

A program like SnagIt would be best, but it's not free.

With Word :
Open Word.
Go (back) to the window you want a screen copy from.
Press Alt-PrintScreen.
Go back to Word
Press Ctrl-V (paste, haha).
Done.

15609  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: This is true - Mid air harmonics on: June 09, 2007, 11:46:25 am
Just my comments on your findings on this matter :

As you might know, apart from standing waves whatever philosophies, I try to form more "theories" from different angles, in order to be in the end  able to explain Audio.

Explain Audio ? yes, because there are, in fact, so many things that are unexplained so far, or can't be justified by scientific means.
Let's say I'm on a kind of right track already, because XXHighEnd sort of Happy does what I expected in advance, while at the same time officially it should sound like ... you know. prankster

Gerner, at this time of the evolution I can be very wrong, but I would (like to) dedicate your finding on this matter to the ability of original sounds to re-emerge in the room during playback. This, versus the matter of things not being recorded.
That I dedicate "this" to your finding, it just a hunch (but let's say for now I'm good at hunching).

Please note for those who don't know me, or generally think my writings are too long Happy that my life consists of writing maybe 10 or 20 of these pages per day, which just sets my mind, in the end having learned something. So yes, most often this is brainstorming with myself, which is just for a good cause ... for ME. Might you benefit form it too ...  thankyou

So, opposed to the standing waves principle about which I wrote rather often by now (bd-design), the phenomenon of waves recreating in mid air by means of proper playback I've written about only once maybe (bd-design again).

Gerner, I am not all that much saying that what you experienced is because of that, but merely because of it happening, you receive the opportunity where otherwise it wouldn't be possible.

I think that "music data" which was not able to get it to the recording, can just emerge again in the air where the elements of the music data are being played back. Example : supposed each individual string of a guitar were recorded by means of individual microphones, the harmonics of them playing together, would not be recorded, right ? Now think of it ... with an electrical guitar, this just would be so (individual microphones -> the element with 6 microphones).
Of course, when we listen to a live concert, we do not perceive the individual strings, because from the loudspeaker all is already merged, and what we hear would be the reality of the harmonics of the together played strings (chords).

This doesn't sound (no pun) so bad, does it ? innocent

Right.
Now especially for you Gerner, if you're not awake, you will be !

We now jump over to our Ben Harper and his Cruel World ...
I think I now just start to be able to explain what went wrong with this very good example of the instruments falling apart in the crazy dynamics Engine#3 Double version ...
And I think you can guess what's coming next ...

For the others : This track (Welcome to the Cruel World from the equally named album) is (like the other tracks) about playing the electrical guitar with chords. Engine#3/Double shows these cords in a very very interesting way as all the individual strings being very well audible, and you could say that where we audio freaks are always seeking for separation of instruments, voices and the like, Engine#3/Double shows the individual parts of the instruments. Veeeery interesting, crazily impossible, but just happening. Also, this is the version with the crazy dynamics, the SPL meter not showing the perceived SPL level, but your ears do ...

Now what I say is : with this #3 version the individual parts do not play together, and where harmonics of the treamplay don't get a chance, most probably the antiphase elements of a drum smash etc. don't get a chance either (so all is pronounced unnaturally).

What XXHighEnd does (stribes for anyway) is getting the phase of all right. This is about this -theoretically anyway- one very small point in space where all has to be right. When this one small point is expressed as, say, one cubic cm (which is even rather much), now you do the math (with speed of sound and length of waves for individual frequencies) how accurate things have to be.
Now, since #3/Double should be more accurate than #3/Normal (or #1 and #2 and #2/Double for that matter), things go over the hill. BUT :

And this is for Gerner again ... this was with the, say, MKI version of the Orphean/BD15.

We (Bert and me) already found that what can be done with software (no DSP !) can also be done with loudspeaker filters. Well, to a large extend anyway. Trust me, the differences with a filter can be day and night (and within 0.5 seconds audible -> I mean this), but only when the source is right !!!

Now things kind of backfire ...
Where #3/Double was over the hill wil the MKI, I don't think it is with the MKII. And haha, I didn't even try !!
But the fun is, I don't need to, and I think I can reason why;

Where the MKII became better in all aspects, it got rid of a, say, level of freshness at the same time. Freshness which is (and was) of a crazy high level anyway, without a flair of disturbance, but Bert as well as me do want more of it with the MKII (and Bert, I know this was only here and there in between the lines, but I think I may speak for you on this matter). I sense, I feel, I KNOW that today #3/Double will perform as intended. It now fully coorporates with the MKII filtering. It went over the hill because the MKI couldn't really cope.

And again, I am just reasoning something out, but the fun is, that I always do this in advance. So, obviously I could go and listen first before this writing, but for me it is much better if I turn out to be right; It does not give me the opportunity to talk into directions. Otoh, if it turns out I am wrong, I have to explcitly find the reaons of why.

All together, on the topic, XXHighEnd is about getting the things right, and I state that the most of this happens in mid air, and not in the speaker, in the amp or wherever we might think we can enhance the sound. BUT, all these elements can destroy !!
Isn't that the same ? well, yes, I think it is. But mind you, when the angle is "it can destroy" your tweaks will be different !

We all know about the filtering cables, and that cables might bring you less sharp highs. BS !!
BS if you understand what my objectives are : putting through the sound as unaltered as possible. THAT brings you the good sound. Uhhm ... the NATURAL sound.

If you (Gerner) are now able to hear the antiphase of a single voice in the midst of all, this is
a. because you are very adaptive to it  Happy
b. because the very accurate phase mappings.

With b. I don't mean that this individual voice is accurately reproduced, but that ALL is accurately reproduced, because of why the individual voice now can be heard properly.

For now I want to end this post with a remark of similar order, though the subject is very different;

Instruments can be played back rather separated in many systems. If all is rather okay, this just happens satisfactory. Also : I never noticed that XX would do this better in the higher regions of the frequency spectrum (for the lower regions yes, because the standing waves would mask everything otherwise). But :

What *is* very much noticable, is this :
Suppose you are not into metal or hardrock and the like; in that case you wouldn't like the screeming guitars, right ?
Well, just try them again ... What happens today with XX, is that the normally screeming mask or flair all over the total sound, has become so completely separated, that there is no such thing as a mask or flair of screeming. There is just this one area in space where the guitar plays its rough notes. Actually it is rather interesting, because the guitar can have it. It was made for it. "That" music was made for it. All fits. It's not screeming all over the sound. It's screeming a little bit by itself. Let it go ... let it flow ... Just listen to what this headbanging plectrum thrower makes of it ...  biglol
15610  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Wont run on my laptop on: June 09, 2007, 10:18:48 am
And Chris, note that when you explicitly download something (when you apply "Save as"), you thus downloaded it to the location you indicated (which would be within the "Save as" prompt), but after that you have to execute the whatver it was you downloaded. It occurs to me that you might forget that part.
Btw, when the download is complete, the system will ask you for "Run ?", and if you there reply with Yes, you'd be doing it okay. Did you answer No, you can re-find the location with Explorer, and doubleclick the downloaded file.

Also, when it's a compressed file (like a Zip), with the doubleclick you order for unpacking the compressed file, and at that time you again have to enter the location you want the uncompressed file(s) to be stored. Then again you have to execute the whatever it is that was distracted from the compressed file you downloaded.

When you supposedly installed something which is thought to be wrong (which I think could be the case with Framework 3.0 while you don't have 2.0 (or even 1.1)) you could go to Control Panel - Software, find the according in there, and uninstall it (click on it, and it will gove you the opportunity). Then, when that (supposedly) is out of the way, you can install the "other" thing (like 2.0), and it won't give you a message like "this or a newer version has already been installed" (similar), like you reported. That such a thing (message) can occur can be judged as a bug or anomaly of install sequence stuff, but often things are too complex to get it right (which is similar to me saying (like I did) that you need 3.0 to be on all safe sides, at that time not knowing whether it would allow you to do that without needing the prerequisite 2.0 first).

Please read the latter as something very general, and just try to understand the principles of it.

When you officially installed something, it should show up under Control Panel - Software. Thus, if it doesn't show there, most probably something went wrong during the process.
BUT :
Do note that this is about "officially installed" which is related to the software itself. Example of software NOT officially installing : XXHighEnd. You just put it somewhere, and it's okay.
When software is officially installing, you will see something like that during the process of it (e.g. Now installing blahblablah).

If there's anything else : just keep us busy !  Happy

PS: I know you urged for doing these things telephone means. Well, besides it wouldn't work as a general principle for general reasons (like needing 100 telephones), is is really better like this. Things are written down now, and you can read all at your speed and at the time you are ready to understand. The most important therefore is trying to understand what you are doing, and what is happening as a response to that, never mind you grasp only 10% of it. After 10 comes 11 ...
What you just should do *always*, is writing down what you did, and what happened. Not only does this give you the opportunity to better understand, but also it gives 100% insight what happened when you got off track. You, btw, could make screencopies (Print Screen button followed by Paste into a Word document), and when needed add comments to the screencopies.
You then could paste in (attachment) the document in here ... done. No need to write things afterwards (in here), and no need to recall things by heart.
Btw, I think you are a sport anyway in just trying to get it done.  clapping

Hmm ... this doesn't seem to work. It looks like some 8MB is the maximum (the 19MB was my attempt). I guess it wasn't made for this ...
Must investigate this further ...
15612  Ultimate Audio Playback / Interesting Music / Testmaterial / Re: Ludvig Berghe Trio on: June 08, 2007, 07:35:27 pm
Haha, that's a good one. Wasn't quite prepared yet. heat

But half of a track ... maybe then the rights people are at my doorstep too soon ...
I'd say 1/3 of a track max, and no more than 2 minutes (which would be some 20MB uncompressed, but I highered the limit to that a somewhat for conveniency).

Note that the up and down speed of this server is 1000kbs only (that's some 100 kilobyte per second Happy).

With XX I hear now how good it is recorded

Please keep in mind that this board is intended to be about "difficult" music, not turning out to be difficult with XX at all.
It's close, but just okay. It would be better if you'd add where things normally go wrong(ish), and not anymore now.

Also, in a later stage it would be about examples where a new XX version has improved ... or got worse for that matter. I'll listen, try, and try to improve again. evil
Under those conditions I think it is very legit to post samples.
15613  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Wont run on my laptop on: June 08, 2007, 06:38:44 pm
Chris, I don't know whether you have the 3.0 version (in this folder I showed to you), but if yes, possibly that's your problem (and then caused by my misdirections).

I've changed the page I referred to before a bit ( http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=11.0 ), so if you can revert to a before situation and you follow the links on that page again, thinks may workout better.

Sorry for your troubles so far ...

No no no. Only the 2.0 is sufficient !
15615  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Wont run on my laptop on: June 08, 2007, 03:24:09 pm
It should be relevant, since it was developed under 3.0.
I never could prove that a runtime environment needed that though.

If you installed the DotNet2.0 properly, under C:/WINDOWS you should see the DotNet version like you can see below (ref. your 2.0.50727).
