2  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Windows 7 and Core Parking... on: March 28, 2012, 03:24:24 am
Core Parking: is a new feature in W7 that may be very handy for laptop computers, but not very convenient for systems where high performance is needed at all times.
From what I know Core Parking moves background processes to single core allowing other cores to sleep. This prevents all cores from always running at a low utilization which consumes power.

To disable it, you'll need to do the following:

- Go to Regedit
- Find this key: " 0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583 "
- Within this key, there is a value called:  " ValueMax "
- This value represents the % number of cores the system will park - the default 100%  ie: all cores are potentially park-able
- Change the value from 64 to 0 so the "ValueMin" and "ValueMax" are both zero
- You will have to find the key a few times and repeat the process for each time it is found - the number of instances will depend on the number of power profiles in your system
- Do a full shutdown and power-off and cold-re-start

Progressive rock jam as its best...

5  Ultimate Audio Playback / Interesting Music / Testmaterial / Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio - Midnight Sugar on: March 15, 2012, 08:43:53 pm
This album has one of the best recorded pianos I´ve ever heard.

Plus, the version I have is a 24bit/192khz vinyl rip.

Recommended 100%.

Marcin_gps,

Please let us know about your conclusions about the EVS ground enhancers . I wondering about getting a couple of them.

Thanks in advance,

Regards.-
7  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: where to attenuate? on: January 14, 2011, 02:45:46 pm
1) 100
2) 100
3) 100
4) 90 (without neighbours Happy)

But when 3) is XX, you can do it there *too*. Just try it; it matters (for the better). Could be -6dB, -12dB.
Also notice that since this is perfectly allowed (I say and claim), you can use the Normalized Volume from XX just the same.

Btw, if 1) and 2) allow you to actually control the volume (when XX is used), something is not right. Unless the HD2 has a volume control of its own, and is connected to the Windows volume *slider* (slider only, not the Windows volume itself).

Peter

Peter,

So, (3) being XX, is it better not to reach the 100%?

Thanks.-
8  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Reducing EMI/RFI / Power Wraps by Highwire on: January 13, 2011, 04:15:54 pm
WARNING:

This one should be easy and effective, BUT don't use it on grounded powercords. Because the ground connection works as a leave/escape for high frequency distortion. The "optimum" should be to open the powercord, and let only the + and - pass through a coil. The ground wire (shield) should be untouched.

In fact, a wise man told me once, if you wanna use silver in your cables, you should apply it not in the signal conductors but in the ground/shielding. Because the ground/loop noise is very high in frequency and needs a "perfect" conductor to get rid of.

pedal,

Thanks a lot for the wise advice.

Flecko,

According to the Highwire page, the theory of operation isn´t about inductivity:

"Power Wraps use a patented RF absorber in a special configuration developed for use on AC cords. The RF absorbers filter the RFI and kill the ringing in AC cords."

I´ve just ordered one to try it in my UPS power cord.

Have you ever try these power wraps?
10  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: where to attenuate? on: January 12, 2011, 09:38:50 pm
I was just about to ask a similar question:

In my case, I have 4 volume controls to manage:

1) Prodigy HD2 driver volume setting
2) Windows 7 volume setting
3) Player (XX o whatever) volume control
4) Amplifier volume control

In which % would you set each volume?

Thanks in advance,

Regards.-
11  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Motherboard architecture / MSI Military Class Concept on: January 12, 2011, 08:45:31 pm
Guys,

I would like to know your opinion about the architecture of MSI motherboards vs. the always-recommended-here Gigabyte´s.

In the following pic you could see some specifications about the MSI "Military Class Concept" motherboards architecture:

Do you find it better than Gigabyte?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks both of you, earflappin and Praphan, for your answers.

Praphan,

Was the improvement very noticeable?

13  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Does Improving PC PSU and Reducing PC EMI/RFI Improve SQ? on: January 03, 2011, 03:42:14 am
Recently, I did some experimentation with reducing EMI/RFI inside my Zalman PC.  Basically I took some ERS cloth (known for its EMI/RFI absorptive qualities), put it in a plastic bag (its conductive material!) and carefully encased my Lynx AES16 card.  The improvement was immediate.  Noise was reduced and SQ improved, specifically, richer tonality and increased micro/macro detail.  Has anyone else experimented in this area?   I've also put some ERS on my Zalman PSU with good results.  Next, I'm going to try putting some ERS on the IC chips on the Lynx.  The ERS is OK with high temp applications and the Lynx card doesn't run hot anyway.

earflappin,

Could you please post some pics of your "experiment" of encasing the sound card with ERS cloth and the plastic bag? I was wondering about doing the same with my Audiotrak Prodigy HD2 Xtreme...

Thanks in advance,

Regards!
