1021  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 9z-7-5 activation on: November 05, 2012, 12:07:59 pm
Hey Alain,

First about the latter "restore" issue : This will be too vague for you and me to work out / resolve; too many things can have - and most probably will have been done by you after this. I mean, to get all in the state you wanted. Maybe not, but we can't work that out anyway.

But now your first (clone) operation ...

I am 100% sure things go odd with such a clone operation, but merely the cloning back. Re the latter, I mean when the clone was made when the OS concerned NOT running (so, when you clone the OS disk from the OS running from there, all becomes super vague and it will be completely to TrueImage to have that all right);

When I clone an OS disk (so, not from an OS running on it) and use that one to boot, things are NOT the same. This can be in all kind of areas like power management and for sure the reserved space for making Restore Points; this is always 0 then.

*Which* things change seem a kind of random to me. But also look at this, just as an example and derived from my own quest what actually can happen :

- Usually we clone a partition; not a disk. This means that exactly this "boot partition" (what is it ? 100MB or so ?) mat (or will ?) remain -ehm, may not be cloned at all;

- We already know that especially with Dual Boots the on boot can influence the other (most probably this is related to a common part for both which *has* to be there).

- When you make the clone, all kind of registrations are in the registry. Example : what drive letters your removable USB devices have. When you make the close with some USB disk attached and put that clone back when it is not there, things *have* to change. Notice that when the system is shut down all is registered and that this will be different from rebooting from another disk (no matter it's virtually the same). This can be because things changed in the mean time.
Do it's a complex thing anyway.

To be complete :

After that, the music had interruptions at random, while the progress bar and time counter were still working.

This is nothing like not being activated. In that case XXHighEnd will disappear (assumed your time counter is from the GUI and not from the OSD). So, something just being not right as it can happen to anyone.

I could also have said : I don't know. But what I described above are my own observations. I always pay attention to everything, and I really see things change which shouldn't. So I'm only trying to find explanations for it.
Btw, I also use TrueImage Home 2012, but I don't think it is related to the means making the clone (unless it was from a "live" OS, as explained above).

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

I normally do not clone a drive. I did this as an exception because I was quite sure that I would run through problems with Win 8. I normally do a backup right after the plain OS install (and activated), so it saves some time if I have to restart from scratch. I have a bootable True Image USB stick (also on CD), so yes, Windows is offline. But I understand that "cloning" has its limits.

About the 100MB partition: yes, I take it also with the backup of the main partition.

Alain
1022  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 9z-7-5 activation on: November 03, 2012, 10:12:16 am
Hi Peter,

I recently cloned Win 7 from my music pc prior to the installation of a Win 8 upgrade. After a while, I reverted to Win 7 from that clone (it was done with this in mind), so the main drive was back at its prior state.

After that, the music had interruptions at random, while the progress bar and time counter were still working. When I press STOP then PLAY, all works again. Until it cuts later. There was no "undemo" aside the Processor Core Appointment Scheme, and the Cover Art had its red border. Yet it seemd to behave as if the activation was kind of incomplete.

I started playing with the different options to check if it could correct that matter, but it didn’t. There are no error messages.

I had a backup from a fresh Win 7 SP1 installation (I use Acronis True Image 2012 Home edition by the way) with the intent of using my latest activation code for that pc.

I did this twice, before resolving myself to ask for a new activation. The first time, I tried to activate it after a short amount of time playing music. The second time, I played music for about an hour, then rebooted a few times during that period. My activation code was not working anymore.

So I asked for an activation again.

But about the restore from that cloned drive, I would have thought that a new activation was not needed ?

Hi Juan,

Very interesting link indeed Happy I was not aware about this. Maybe my comprehension is not right, but if the TLER is adjusted to 7 seconds, I guess that it is mostly to comply with RAID controllers, but I (still I could be wrong) guess that not using a RAID controller does not change the fact that this drive carries a 5 year warranty, plus that it is considered an "enterprise" HDD... I would be confident with this drive Happy

Have you checked Seagate ? The Constellation 3.5in model seems interesting also...

As of now, I like the Black Caviar Western Digital 3.5in for desktops, as it carries a 5 year warranty and they seem quite durable. But as I understand things now, the method for reliability differs between the 2 categories.

But I find very interesting that you can try the drive and return it even if it works fine Happy

I hope you will come back with your impressions with that drive.

Regards,

Alain

I read the Intel paper with great interest, mostly the ruggedness and reliability of the enterprise hard drives.

You should not be worried about the fact that they mention "RAID". They will work fine as standalones. We do have a few old servers in our company that do not have RAID specs (one that goes back to 2001) and they are still working. RAID is a method that can provide for more protection against data loss (and/or speed depending on the kind of RAID), but it does not change a thing about their reliability and ruggedness.

Yes they are normally rugged and reliable, but you should verify if they allow as many Start/Stop cycles, since they are conceived to work 24/7. Generally speaking, they would allow at least 50,000 Start/Stop cycles.

I assume that when you talk about enterprise HDD, you are still talking about Sata drives ? I ask this since there are also SAS drives (the connections look the same, but they require a controller generally not found or a standard desktop motherboard). Just mentionning.

As for SQ, I can't tell... Peter could chime in ?

Cracked and solved!

In your RDC connection, you have to select 'Play on Remote Computer'. This solves the problem.

All credit to Alain.

Mani.
Hi Mani,

I am glad I could point in the right direction ... And that you were able to select the right option. I should have written "third" instead of "first". My bad unhappy

Peter,

I remember having the same problem when using the Remote Desktop Connection (with Blue Tooth but I am not sure if the Blue Tooth connection has something to do with this...).

In RDC -> Options ->  Local resources (this is a litteral translation from French) -> Parameters... Verify if the Audio parameters are set correctly. After I checked the first choice, I was able to use WASAPI and I Was Happy Wink

Not sure if this is the source of the problem, but...

Hi,

Yes you can activate XXHE, provided that your activation code is about 09z-07 official release version, the PC is the one it was activated upon and the PC name is the same (ex: ALAIN-PC not the same as PC-ALAIN). I do not think that the HDD has anything to do with activation (it can be changed without the need to ask again for a new activation key).

The next part is to follow the notes about playing a while with XXHE before entering your activation key.

I have an Oops too. I was too tired to check on my music PC if it was a "check" or a button... Sorry for misleading...
1029  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: SFS MAX question? on: September 27, 2012, 04:13:39 am
I think there is something below these 2 adjustments that you need to uncheck, so each of them will not increase accordingly Happy

Thanks Peter, but I had done this already... Well, it looks as if it has something to do with the card driver... I will try other channels Wink

1031  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / SOTM PCI-e USB 3 controller card problem on: September 16, 2012, 05:56:42 pm
Hi Peter,

I just installed that card a few days ago. All work when I use another music software player, but as soon as I use XXHE, something happens and I get BSODs.

(for this example, I have tried in many modes, WASAPI, KS, high/low SFS, Q1 between 6 and 15, even 30, no PA).

When I start XXHE and play one song, all is fine. If I interrupt the song, I can restart it without a glitch. It's when the song plays until its end an I want to replay it (or I want to play another song), it does not start. So I press the "OFF" button to kill the xxengine3.exe. When I select play, the BSOD happens.

I have switched from my "alain" user to administrator (that I activated for this purpose). The behavior somewhat changes a little, as it gets harder to play the song (after the "OFF" that seems necessary). I have to retry quite a few times and then the BSOD again...

This does not happen when I use another USB connection (either USB 2 or USB 3 from the mobo), but with the SOTM - boom...

Like I said - this does not happen with the other music player that I have tried.

When I check in the System Event Viewer, the error seems to be WMI related. I goes like this:

I had to find that error on the net since my OS is in French and I doubt it would help...

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

This relates to the BSOD that I get (I guess) from the time it happens...

Just a quick note. Please check the warranty... It used to be 3 years standard and 5 years for more expensive and durable drives... I see a lot that only carry 1 year now...

No, it was not me (mentionning a too fast play at 48khz)... Or are you talking about these ?

So of course it was you.

Thanks for sending me the example files. I will test them here, but it looks way suspicious to me ...

Hi Peter,

I did not mention that I tried this with JRiver Media Center, a software that I bought before I heard about XXHIGHEND. I still get the upgrades year after year, but I don't even dare to compare the 2 of them.

It works with JRiver, but I now guess that there are far too many differences to make something out of this.

Hi Boleary,

I think there is another way to correct this...
