91  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 9-Z3 on: October 29, 2010, 01:09:14 am
I need to ask a stupid question regarding editing SFS.ini file ( 11, 21 etc).
I have absolutely no idea how to edit that unhappy
I suppose I need a little remedial help on this.

Thanks

Most probably the hiccups go away if you lower the SFS. So, your 200 has to be processed within a certain time, and if it can't do that you'll have that little stall. Well, I assume it is that. But you can easily try it.

I don't see where more memory is going to help here. Yes, for a larger RAMDisk allright.

If it helps, but you want to persist on the SFS of 200, try to play with the other Appointment Schemes, and also lower the Thread Prio a tad. Or increase the buffer sizes. -> try to give that loading process some space.

(A Guide to Glitchless Playback)

Yes, lower SFS certainly make the little hiccup happened much less often and pretty much disappeared at SFS of 60 or less. However, I still like the SQ
with bigger SFS. The sound is a bit fuller, more body and somewhat more analog to my ears. Right now buffer size is set to 1024 at both XXHighend and Lynx,
appointment scheme 1, I will experiment with thread prio and appointment schemes.

Phwew, I just looked at those prices. swoon Well, very nice (and honoured) that such a thing can be surpassed with 72 euro eh ?
Maybe add a little tiny DACy now ? hahaha

Thank you for sharing and the nice words !
Peter

Definitely, this is the best 72 euro I spent on my system Happy
Now, only if I can get better interface Happy Happy
Now I wonder, once in a while, I get a little hiccup when playing through RamDisk (4GB RAM, RamDisk 1500mb- with 1GB RamDisk, I can only play 4-5 songs continously at a time with 4x AP, SFS 200, 1.5 GB is a bit better). I wonder if more RAM (using Vista 64 bits), 8 or 16 GB with larger RamDisk (4 or 8 GB) might make things run a bit smoother?

Z3 in Win7 was a touch better over all (using Lynx AES16, Cardas Clear cable) but Vista/RAMdisk/Z3 left Qsonix in the dust.
Did you tried RamDisk in W7 too?

[GRRRR... now I remember what I forgot when I was "at Home" yesterday...my Vista installation CD smirk]

Opps, I meant to say Z2/Win 7, not Z3/Win 7. I have not tried RamDisk in W7 but I can do that since I set up my computer
to dual boot anyhow but let me just enjoy listening to music for a few days first Happy

Finally I got 9-Z3 installed after I finally found my Vista disk and reinstalled window and got RAMdisk started only a couple of days ago. All I can say is WOW.
Very impressive and it could not come at a better time. For the last week or so, I have been auditioning the new Qsonix Q205 thinking that it would be nice to have a server with nice interface and since Wadia now join force with Qsonix and designed all the digital circuitry in Qsonix I think that it would be a good alternative to computer server. Qsonix is very nice and the sound quality is excellent, pretty much on par with using CD in my CD player. (I used Stealth Sextet cable from Qsonix to Playback MPS-5 vs using CD in Qsonix itself). Z3 in Win7 was a touch better over all (using Lynx AES16, Cardas Clear cable) but Vista/RAMdisk/Z3 left Qsonix in the dust.  So great work Peter, also you just saved me lots of money except now I think I might have to upgrade my computer to run Vista 64 bits so I can have more RAM and bigger RAMdisk, perhaps.
96  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Split file size and volume on: September 30, 2010, 05:54:56 pm
350 MB? That can't work well with upsampling... Maybe with DAP it could work, but certainly not for QAP.  I encourage you to try some very short track, check its file size and set the same SFS. Then compare to your 350MB setting.
Since this thread got started, I have been following a bit and tried various SFS from about 50-400 and I kept coming back to 350.
Generally I use 4x AP with 16/44.1, 2xAP with 88/96 and 1xAP with 176/192. My computer is a dual core 3Ghz with 4GB RAM.
I don't neccessarily disagree with generalized description of the sound at higher ad lower SFS but how the sound come out will also
depend on the rest of the system as well.
97  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Split file size and volume on: September 29, 2010, 05:20:58 pm
I have been experimenting a bit with split file size. SQ definitely changes and it really depends on your system and your preference.
In my system, larger file size give warmer, may be a tad darker, fuller sound whereas smaller file size is leaner and moving toward drier side
as split file size gets smaller. I definitely does not want to change split file size regularly depending on the file being play.
For me, I find 350mb to be the sweet spot. Anything bigger, the sound is a bit too sluggish and fat, but smaller split file size is too lean for my taste.
So for now, I have to accept the occasional out of memory error. At least now iPad/VNC make things a bit more bearable!

For what it is worth, the problem suddenly went away and I did not really do anything. Just went and used unattended mode
for awhile and came back to use attended mode while I wanted to listen to samples of the new CDs that I just got and voila,
no more problem!
99  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 09z-2 stop playing last track in playlist early on: August 09, 2010, 01:31:36 am
I wonder if the problem might have to do with any of the recent update from Window?
Until last week, I never this problem before, at least on regular 16/44.
However, I now recalled that in the past, once in awhile I also had problem with tracks terminated
early but only with high rez 24/92 or 24/192 but never 16/44 and it was more random, it seems.

Peter, I only found !Played.plxx file which I removed. Unfortunately that did not solve the problem.
101  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 09z-2 stop playing last track in playlist early on: August 07, 2010, 04:54:58 am
I tried unattended mode this morning briefly and all seems fine. For the first time. in attended mode, even if I have one track in the playlist, it also stopped prematurely near
the end.
102  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 09z-2 stop playing last track in playlist early on: August 07, 2010, 01:51:07 am
Yes, in attendded mode. I will try unattended mode when  I have time this weekend.
103  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 09z-2 stop playing last track in playlist early on: August 06, 2010, 05:22:54 pm
Strange, 09z-2 has been running smoothly on my computer since I installed it over a month ago. However during the last few days,
I noticed that the last song on a playlist always stop about 5-10 second before the end of the track.
If I only have one song on the playlist, everything is fine but if more than 1 song on the playlist, the last song always stop early.
The setting remained exactly the same for the last 3-4 weeks, no new program or anything else added to the computer.
The server is win7, dual core, I use engine 4, power scheme 3, 1024mb buffer on both xxHighend and Lynx card, running 4x arc prediction.

Thanks for any suggestion or help.

104  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Bugs of 0.9z on: May 30, 2010, 08:41:14 am
I got alt-x to work now to bring the screen back up. One thing that I notice,
I usually have 4x oversampling arc prediction selected. In unattended mode,
when I press alt-x screen comes back up with 4x oversampling but arc prediction is off.

Peter, thanks for your patience and explaination. I think I slowly am getting
things to work now, just a little clink here and there Happy

Where is the unattended button? I know I clicked it
but can't find where to unselect it?
