1141  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 2.09 sound quality on: February 14, 2018, 09:13:49 am
Hi all,

3 days ago I set back my SFS from 20.19 to 10.19. It took me a month or so but eventually I couldn't stand the, say, sharpness of 20.19. It just was too much of it.
Receiving complaints from the family now and then as well, in the end did it.

Regards,
Peter

Well done !

Next thing is the usb3 card. Then I can start listening.

Don't be disappointed when it appeard you are in demo mode. Because of course you are now. Being activated not only allows Minimized OS but also the Processor Core Appointment, which could be crucial for you. And what is new for you, are the Q3,4,5 settings which when all set to 1, imply the best possible SQ (methinks), but this can only work in Minimized OS (normal OS is too slow for this) plus when low on processor core count it is a bit of a search which Core Appointment Setting does the job.

If you can't control the system anywhere any more (no mouse moving or anything) BUT the sound keeps on happily playing (until the end of the playlist Wink) you'll know you arrived at the wrong setting.
Haha. Chance that this happens is not big, but it does exist.

Peter
1143  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: CUDA support on: February 14, 2018, 05:51:59 am
... Because any GPU in the system (be it on a PCIe card or be it in the CPU) is killing SQ.

So all the guys with a self-respecting system have their video cards out these days (and control via RDC/RDP which does not use any GPU in the host (your Audio PC)).

Does xxhe uses threads or only cores matter?

Telstar - both and all over.
The more cores the better the sound will be.
For 50 euros I would give it a go as long as the real $ stays out somewhat.

Go for it ...

Hi Joseph,

Great stuff for me, just because I didn't know that.

Still it would be so that I'd never install an OS like that. Too many things are dragged along under the hood (not the best for audio).

My HDD's are countless. Almost more than CD's these days.
Haha.

Thanks !

Yes sure. And the answer is No.
You can't guess why ...

Hey David,

I knew there was one other thing to check and it was the " Lock pages in memory".

I know about that topic but I did not point you to it, because how can it be that ?? I mean, don't we all use the same 14393.0 ?
Or maybe not because you use a Home version ?

By the way, I was able to purchase a used Lush here in the States and am amazed by the drastic change already!

Ha !

There is a RAR file batch file  I found for new installs under 2.07. Is that still necessary?

Nope.

This seems to be the same problem but no solution-
http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3633.0

That was solved all right. But I forgot how.

Quote
I have moved the UAC slider up and down, rebooted, changed the Registry setting to 0, etc.

Which are first things NOT to do, and if all is right you ran into warnings about that. One step in the wrong direction and you can reinstall your W10 (seriously).

I found this post :
Re: Win10 - playback will not start now
What I suggested - and which was applied there, is even logical because without password you'll have less rights. No RDC allowed, for example.
So that will be the culprit (I hope !).

Hi David,

I too recall that this occurred - maybe more than once. Can you find it on the forum maybe ? I think it should be there somewhere.

Also, you use XXHighEnd 2.09 right ? (with some more recent version this problem was just there).

Lastly, did you set Contiguous Memory (instead of Mixed) ? It can well be that the current 2.09 bounds to that setting a bit too much (I mean, now I think of it). So it could be an odd combination.

Anyway, it should be able to work normally.

Quote
After the "Wiat for services  to stop", a "Necessary Privileges have been set.

Rereading that, something looks fishy with the combination of Unattended. So most basic step to get it right ?

- Be in Normal OS.
- Set Straight Contiguous Memory;
- Press Play in normal Attended.
- Now the question to reboot should occur.
- Reattempt after the reboot and it should work.

Now go to Minimized OS etc.

And when you're at it, if you can solve it with the last sequence, maybe you can tell what you did when it did NOT work. Always good to know, and possibly I can prevent it for a next time.

Peter
1151  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Silverstone card on: February 11, 2018, 09:13:08 am
Telstar, if you only don't forget to compare with the MoBo USB. For me, the Silverstone has a character which usually was fine, but not on 14393.0. Whether better than USB2, I simply don't know !

Maybe others ever compared.

Peter

Telstar, FYI because possibly you don't know what "RAM-OS" means : Disk with Multi-RAM-boot available for purchase.
And : The Operating System booted from RAM.

So Telstar, that is a lot of questions. Let's see;

First off, XXHighEnd still runs under the 32bits OS. However, some feautures may not work because too complicated to make twice. IIRC, preventing the system from automatically upgrading is one of them. There could be more. All I do is fire up XXHighEnd on a 32 bits (W7) machine - and don't use it for playback.

Quote
But I want to try windows10

If your CPU really supports 32 bits only, then you are in bad luck. W10 only comes in 64bits versions (although I recall that at very first it was (could be) also 32 bits - like the Consumer Preview).

Quote
and I do have a license for a Home edition.
Quote
I want to use my android tablet as remote/screen/controller for it, MS RPC is the best app available?

Bad luck again, because RDC is not suported on Home. OK, only 3 weeks back I managed to tweak a Home OS to accept it after all.
Anyway, yes, I think we all will agree about MS RD program which is available for Windows itself, OSX, IOS and Android.

Quote
and also it requires the PC to be connected to my LAN?

Yes. But Internet can be avoided.

Quote
the creator's update like I use on my work PC (build 16299)

See the other topic you posted in, and my response about it.

Quote
I can download any iso and hopefully a usb installation will work.

They all do. But if your cpu is 32 bits only, they all won't.

Quote
which is this Silverstone usb card I read in some posts? My pc doesnt have a lineas psu yet, but the DAC usb is isolated: should I get one?

Let's say that this is outdated, definitely per W10 14393.0. But, not by 100% guarantee because most who actively used and reported, use the NOS1 DAC. Today I think we all use the USB3 port and this too is dangerous to advise because now again many use the same mobo (like ASRock X79 or X99M uATX).

Notice that you will need (from the top of my head) XXHighEnd 2.01 for W10 suport. And depending on the W10 Build, later versions (but of course using the current 2.09 does the job).

Quote
Also, I will be upgrading it with a manycore 64 bit cpu later this year. What are your thoughts about AMD epyc (32 cores)?

Maybe you know that we supply an audio-dedicated PC (Stealth Mach II LPS). It can very well be that this ends up in there, when the current X99M runs EOL. But, chances are I think higher that it won't happen, because that processor is not "cold". But I suppose I will try anyway. Notice that this is all in the context of 40 core Xeons (hyperthreded) which also run in that PC without overheating. And the "standard" 20 core is cheaper - at least the last time I looked.
Summarised, I will try it, but don't give it a big chance.

I do need a mATX or even better ITX motherboard to save space inside the case (which I'm NOT changing).

Unless things will be changed (or already have been), ITX is NOT good. This is for reasons of the power supply and how it is implemented and the parallel memory leans (two instead of four). uATX is fine, as long as a decent MoBo exists, and this historically not has always been the case (but wait a year and it's back again for the latest chipset etc).

1155  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Getting Specific W10 Builds on: February 10, 2018, 10:19:41 am
Hi Telstar,

Maybe people do/did, but IMO it would be by accident or "not knowing better". XXHighEnd has to support the Build of concern formally, or otherwise nobody would know why things go bad or sound bad etc. So currently there's only formal support for 10074 (sounds special but these days not on par), 10240 (sounds bad), 10565, 10586.0 (is OK), 14393.0 (consensus about being the best).
Ever back I downloaded 15063 (Creators Upgrade) but I never did anything with it because it was generally regarded to be the opposite of lean.

Also notice that these days many (me among them) use the RAM-OS Disk, and this has become a reference. IOW, only when I make a from RAM bootable version of it (takes a small day all 'n all) I can judge its merits. So only when a special version is around the corner with a fair chance of better sound, I do it. Then, when all looks promising, I start to attack all the bugs, anomalies and other specialties. After that it is formally supported (no upgrades to it allowed, which XXHighEnd takes care of).

Now you are up to date informed again ... Happy
Peter
