Title: Special Mode is ticking and does not load first seconds
Post by: Claude on January 11, 2012, 07:13:44 pm
Hi there,
I am still searching for the perfect setting. So i tried Special Mode and am really excited. BUT: i get ticks every couple of seconds. I use the default Q1 setting and straight with 220sfs and 15 ms clock, unattended and minimize os. AND: it does not load the first seconds of a track.
I am using a MacBook Air with4gb.
With so many different settings I am unsure in which direction I can go to get it working.
Thanks
Claudius

G'day Claudius ...

at first glance I would be thinking the system isn't fast enough to be able to process all the data before it's needed to fill the NOS buffers.

To help reduce the time needed to process that data, first drastically reduce the SFS and see if that helps. Reducing the Q1 value will also reduce CPU requirements.

Have task manager running in the background displaying the CPU graphs, to see the effect the above two changes have.

You may need to balance the Player/Thread priority a little different also, but try starting with the above before looking further afield.

Good luck,

Russ

Hi Claudius,

Alsthough Russ's advice is good in normal circumstances, this doesn't count for the NOS1-USB. It is setup such that it can not use Special Mode (this is also stated in the NOS1 guide).

Regards,
Peter

I tried running Special mode on NOS1-USB too. My audio PC is quite fast and still lots of ticks and some distortion. The first few second of the track is lost too.

So don't run special mode on NOS1-USB.

You don't need to try. It is just not supported. So, it *can't* work. :)

Yeah you are right Peter. Not support.
But I tried this age ago when I just got my NOS 1 USB back. I did it before I read the note.  :dntknw:
Thanks

Ah, OK! Not the first time I overread something. Sorry and thank you all for the replies.
Although it is too bad, that special is not supported. Because special is really special. The music is so vibrant (the best word I can find) and interesting, that it is impossible to not follow it. The music starts and you can hear deeeeeeeeeep into the recording venue. I hear the smallest movements of e.g. an orchestra (turning the sides of their notes, moving on their chairs ...).
Maybe I have to find the "right" setting in adaptive mode. I experimented with the clock resolution and this really does bring much more details. But it seems that you have to find the right amount of sfs for a given resolution (or vice versa).
Peter,
is there no way for special to work?
Best
Claudius

But wait ... this could be interesting ...

Are you saying that you perceive this clearly better sound from the NOS1 with Special Mode ?
If yes, please let me know your exact (related) settings, because all I know is that it can't work at all without continuous distortion. Or put in another way : I never even could judge it, but I also never tried hard (is of no use of course when you know yourself you didn't make anything for it).

The interesting part is about that I was quite sure at first that all this settings-stuff wouldn't matter anymore anyway, and at least it is proven by now that *this* is not true. So ...

So, if now someone tells me that he is able to judge Special Mode (for xx seconds ?) and that it really sounds better - which it normally does to everybody (incl. those with the original NOS1) ... then maybe I should find some time to put effort in this. I don't think it is undoable, and all I did was working the exact other way (highest buffer settings etc.). This brought the by far better sound compared to the original NOS1, which does not tell at all that it can not be better*again*.

Btw, vibrant is the exact phenomenon in order here, so apparently you know what you are doing ...

Hi Peter,
I haven't had any time, but I will report back in a couple of days.
So far: I did not hear the first seconds, but after that I could hear the rest of the track. I tried to use special mode 2 or three times and every time XX quit (I do not remember the error message. Maybe a runtime error?). The last time I tried it worked, but I got the annoying clicks.
