16  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Win10 10586.36, XXHE 2.03a sounds great to me on: December 31, 2015, 09:55:36 pm
None of them is activated, so you need to provide the license(s) yourself. XXHighEnd on each of the OSes *is* activated.

Interested. Where would I get the various licenses for Win10. I have disks (and key codes) for Win 7 Pro and Win 8.0 Pro but upgraded to Win 10. Without Windows licenses these this may be pointless.

Thanks.
17  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Win10 10586.36, XXHE 2.03a sounds great to me on: December 31, 2015, 05:51:09 am
I have read that this version (Win10 10586) doesn't sound good. With the settings I have it sounds very good - compared to XXHE 1.186a on Win 8 (with the Win7 shell); but this also sounded very good. Not dimensionless (as with plugged ears) as people have written.

The depth, dynamics, clarity and details I'm getting is great. The USB cable upgrade made a huge difference on highs that without it perhaps I would not hear the difference.

I would like to hear the other versions that people have written about that sound better -- 10074 for example.

I haven't partitioned a drive in years. Can I partition and not delete my current setup?  I had problems installing Win10 ISO. Was it because I forgot to activate the Win7 Pro (which I have a disk for)? In the end I installed Win 8 from disk, upgraded to 8.1 then to Win 10 10586.

Or can I buy a setup with the best WIN 10 version on a SSD (no noise)?
18  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Upgrading to 2.03 and Activating on: December 26, 2015, 08:55:24 pm
I changed my default web browser from Edge to Internet Explorer and was able to purchase 2.xx using PayPal and got the activation code. The UAC seemed to keep Edge from working. UAC is changed by XXHE.

I had a similar issue with activation. When I clicked PayPal is the UAC preventing connection to the internet? The popup I get is "This app can't open    Microsoft Edge can't be opened using the Built-in Administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again." However, I can get to the internet with this login using Internet Explorer but not Edge (broken e icon). So I sent the text file also.
20  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 1.186, best ever! (Again) on: December 21, 2015, 05:49:36 am
I realize this post is relatively old. I agree -- XXHE is amazing! I tried several others before going to XXHE (2 or 3 years ago?). For those not sure about trying it out do it.

Clock Resolution: I just realized how amazing XXHE is when I finally eliminated some programs that were keeping me from getting to Clock Resolution of 15 (instead of previously suck on 1). Peter wrote You have to hear the difference -- yes indeed.

USB cable: another significant improvement was changing the computer to DAC cable and the cable inside my home brew DAC (to Amanero USB interface board).

Class A amplification v.s. Class B or AB -- I can select A/AB on the Douglas Self "Trimodal" amplifier and Class A on that amp is more full. Will have to try my Class D Hypex 400's again now that things have improved.

All the little things are adding up to amazing sound. I have tried to install Win10 on a test SSD but have had difficulties. If 2.03 is even better than 1.186 not sure if my friends will believe me and come over to listen.

Thank you Peter!
21  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Getting Specific W10 Builds on: December 20, 2015, 03:56:03 am
For Win10 10586 you said to email. To what address -- or it just occurred to me it may be a joke as I saw elsewhere that you won't respond to emails about topics -- meaning 'you' figure how to install Win10 10586.

I downloaded 10585 and I saw a key on that web site but it has limited life. Haven't tried to install.

I looked over the many posts on Win10 and tried the links which took me to a general download page (10586).

I have a test SSD so I can swap back to the original.

Other questions:

1. Is it too early to try Win10 and XXHE 2.03? (being that it needs specific builds)

2. I downloaded Win10 1511 (Tech Bench) and tried to install but it requires a key. I saw somewhere that using your key for another version would work. - it didn't.

3. Could install Win7 then upgrade to Win10 but what version would it be and not worth while if it has bad SQ.

So, where is the activation Key for Win 10? Did I miss it somehow when I downloaded?
Some of you figured it out so it can be done.
 Shocked
22  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Clock Resolution on: December 16, 2015, 05:21:50 am
I see this in your sig :

Quote
(cannot select higher clock);

I suppose you get a message from XXHighEnd similar to "asked for is 5, received was 1.xxx" ?
If so, it is an indication that you have something running in your system which shouldn't. Now suppose this is audio related ... (what about Fidelizer). Possibly it is the cause of today's subject ...

Background info :
Nothing (nothing !) should be hogging the Clock Resolution unless it is actively doing something at the moment (the playback of XXHighEnd is an example). So when something is just sitting there (like a Driver) and it hogs the Clock Resolution (setting) then it is actually destructive (something else now can't use it for the whatever purpose).

If I were you I'd find the cause of this and eliminate it. Or tell me what it is first then we can always see further.
If you have no clue, start with programs / processes which look like "monitoring" processes.

Peter

Yes on the message and running processes. Disabled  three processes that were starting automatically that obviously weren't needed (Java Update for example) and was then able to select 15. Should have known better.  There are several Windows processes still running but left them. There are many showing stopped.
Thanks!
23  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Output Device keeps changing on: December 15, 2015, 06:44:35 am
Output Devices in list: Primary Sound Driver, KS:ASUSVAD Wave,  and KS: AMANERO TECHNOLOGY STREAMING.

Used 0.9z-9b until installing 1.186a. I always use minimized OS.

When I select play (unattended or not) it will change from Amanero to the ASUS device and then a couple messages come up. I change to Amanero and it plays. It also does this when I choose next in either mode - Alt-N or the next button in attended mode. It happened on 0.9z-9b but seems more often with 1.186a.

Three days ago I installed the Ramdisk but it was happening before that.

I recently tried different core appointment schemes so thought that may be the cause of more frequent problems. I was using 1-2 for a long time then tried the others and was on 3-5. So I went back to 1-2 -- still happens but perhaps less often when play is pressed still occurs with Alt-N and next button.

In Control Panel I found the ASUS device where I hadn't looked before and disabled it and it dropped from the list. I haven't found where the "Primary Sound Driver" can be disabled. In my HP it was easy to find with Beats or a HP setup.

I'm hoping that having only one choice will stop changing the output device (and doesn't select no driver at all).
Will try one more thing: select another field so the last wasn't the output device and see if ALT-N still changes it.

That is where I am (or was) at with this. I saw that other people had similar issues but I didn't see a solution.

Peter's suggestion (elsewhere) to eliminate (disabled when I was in doubt) unnecessary processes/programs seemed to solve these problems. Alt-N works in unattended mode now and was previously consistently deselecting my Amanero device. I've only hit play about four times or so but it was doing this fairly consistently. Eliminating these processes also allowed me to select a clock resolution other than 1ms (can now select 15). This was on Core Scheme of 3-5 that I was using earlier with this problem. So it looks good now. Thanks Peter!
24  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Clairixa USB-cable - Listening impressions on: December 13, 2015, 05:37:26 pm
Perhaps I can come up with $ for a try of the Clairixa cable. Hearing is believing. My USB cable upgrade was simple yet an essential upgrade!

My equip: dual ESS9018's (Twisted Pear Audio Buffalo III SE boards) with (isolated) Amanero USB input card; computer is ASUS Z87 PRO i7-4770K.

I was using a standard USB cable then tried an AudioQuest Cinnamon 0.75m -- back and forth many times to be sure I wasn't dreaming and no doubt the high end was significantly more detailed and music was more full. I was using Norah Jones 192KHz Cold Cold Heart piano section which brought out the change with cables.

Last week I tried another: Kimber Kable BBus (with silver conductors) 0.5m about USD 100. And I was amazed at the improvement over the Cinnamon cable.

Bul**t some say -- I was one. It is just digital and CD's work with programs that must be 100% accurate. A computer can read a CD program again if an error occurs.

With music timing must be affected (?) because it does matter.  20KHz has a period of 50us. I have read that you want to be accurate to 100ps -- or was it 20? Music is not a sine wave and the relationship of frequencies matters. Anyone with knowledge on this? Topic for another place?
25  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Amanero usb-i2s on: April 06, 2013, 06:33:38 am
I have installed this in my Buffalo III SE. I used the recommended isolator chip. It has worked well for me.
