136  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: ram-os drive, XXHE v2.06b, Windows 10 build 14393.0 on: August 23, 2016, 01:04:38 pm
Yes Peter, today I was thinking something similar. These highs make,  somehow, to miss the coherence of the whole. I thought that the loss of charm perhaps was because the ear had become accustomed, as usual, to the new sound. But those highs are still disturbing, more in some CDs than others, and never again, after all, look natural. Those highs make that this 14393.0 version has lost its capacity to thrill. So far.

Juan

Hi Alain, it can be disabled but what surprised me is that Peter didn't mention it,  probably it doesn't have any importance.
OK, I also like to be in the cloud but not in the wrong one  Happy

138  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Microsoft OneDrive, should be disabled? on: August 20, 2016, 02:27:59 am
Microsoft OneDrive is the only process together with the Phasure Control Panel enabled in the startup,  as can be seen in the Task Manager,  and the startup impact appears as High. I wonder if it has any importance and should be disabled or if it doesn't matter.

Thanks Peter, I send you an email for this new version. I guess that the installation process is the same one, correct?

Juan

Hi Peter, has it some other advantages besides that the new version takes up less space? In my case with 24GB of memory I have 4Gb free with the current 14393.0 version.

Juan

As I said in other post, everything is working well now. Only point that when I installed the 14393.0 (method 1) the only problem I found was that the Network was lost and did not appear the Servermusic disks. I guess that that happens when install a new version of Windows.

Other things I've noticed is that when change the volume, up or down, with the AutoHotkeys now the process is faster than before. Also if I want to do something with the taskbar in the Audio Pc sometimes it becomes a very slow process.

Otherwise the sound seems better than ever. The highs now seem full of detail and very natural and the bass are stronger and richer than ever. I could not imagine that my speakers were able to give such low bass with a vibration that really is impressive.

Juan
143  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: ram-os drive, XXHE v2.06b, Windows 10 build 14393.0 on: August 14, 2016, 05:57:10 pm
All is working fine here. Only a first impression.

Yes, that treble is somewhat lighter, thinner and even seems bright but above all, and after a while the feeling that prevails is the clarity.
Bass seems noticeably better, can be perceived the different bass tones better than before. Now the bass is not only an instrument to mark the rhythm, instead it makes music for itself. Maybe it is something obvious but to hear it clearly is not so easy.

Above all, again, this new 14393.0/XXHE v2.06b increases the consistency across the spectrum. The entire sound spectrum seems to live in a more harmonious and coherent manner. There is no sound holes. Now the sounds are played without pushing or overlap each other.

In conclusion, I would say it is again a step forward, although it must be done with a little time, especially to get used to the treble.

Putting a new operating system on the RAM-OS with the latest version of XXHE with the settings (they work for me) is an extraordinary advance in comfort and ease of use.

Congratulations and thanks, Peter!

144  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Ripping CDs: is there something to do in relation with SQ ? on: August 08, 2016, 10:53:40 am
Hi Alain,

When I ripped my cds I used both EAC and dbpoweramp. EAC seemed a bit sweeter but I ended up using dbpoweramp because for me it looked easier to use and the sound seemed closer to what I thought was the real thing. I was using for ripping a Plextor PX-230A and a Plextor PX-L890SA. The first one is very fast and very good ripping cds with some problems (scratches) and the second one has FUA capability: Clear Read Cache with FUA (dBpoweramp Reference required) quickly remove the cached audio using a command called FUA. Important to avoid ripping errors.

About WAV or FLAC, I ripped originally all my cds in WAV and I have some hard drives stored as a backup that way. Later as Iīm using SSDs in my Music Server Pc and the SSDs have limited capacity I made a selection of what I want to listen and converted it to FLAC. It is hard to tell the difference for me in between both formats but I find interesting the Paul McGowan observation about it:

"There is a lot of talk amongst Audiophiles that despite the fact lossless files are unquestionably bit perfect, they don’t sound the same. How could that be? Well, for one thing, the amount of processing resources required to unpack a lossless file are far greater than those playing the original WAV file. If for no other reason, the extra number crunching impacts noise, jitter and increases power supply demands. So while the bits are identical, the payback demands are not.

If you download a compressed lossless file, uncompress it, and place it on your hard drive, that file will now sound identical to the same file on the same hard drive that had never been compressed. In other words, compressed or uncompressed the bits are the same.

Playback of compressed bits has different demands than playback of uncompressed bits. Hence, sound quality varies depending on the hardware reproducing it."

That means that the way the XXHE software manage it and the hardware involved in it are crucial for the SQ. As I said, for me with my with my actual hardware/software configuration itīs hard to tell any difference but probably using a linear power supply, etc. could improve the SQ.

Can you tell ... why does it not work ?
Why?, I donīt know, the first time it looks that there wasnīt enough free space in the USB key (15GB free) but the second time the message was the same.

If all is right the USB device will be erased completely anyway. Maybe it did not ? (you're asked questions about it by the program)

Something else is that think I see that you used Windows 10 for it - is that right ?

Peter, I answered all the questions and even I formated previously the USB key, so the problem must be when using W10 instead W7.

Juan
146  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Where to install the 2.06a upgrade? on: July 20, 2016, 08:34:19 pm
Hi Peter, other upgrade done. To make correctly the upgrade I had to use the keyboard, mouse and screen in the Audio Pc to see the "authentic" (C:) drive of this Pc (RAM OS). Previously I was seeing the Audio Pc trough the Music Server Pc via remote desktop. I think that that was my problem. Now all is ok. Thanks again.

What a day of upgrades!!  Tadaaaa

Peter, the upgrade was made correctly. I changed the date in the bios previously as you said. In fact I didn't touched it because it was January 2016. After I finished the installation the date changed to July /09/2016. Is that correct? Otherwise all seems to work perfect.

Here in my laptop with W10 64bit the DVD DownloaTool doesnīt work. I used instead Robertīs isotousb.com and all is ok and now I have the bootable USB.

In a while Iīll proceed to the upgrade  Cool

Juan, leave all to default when using the DVD DownloadTool.
(I can't even imagine that it asks for that and if not indeed, where you get your question from Happy).

Regards,
Peter

I got it from Robertīs isotousb.com, there it asked for the file system but anyway Iīm going to try first the DVD downloadTool.

Juan

PS after this installation Iīll go for the 2.06a upgrade, weīll see... scratching
