Title: Best iPad app for controlling a music server?
Post by: DannyD on April 16, 2010, 07:43:16 pm
I'm looking for a good iPad app to remote control my Windows 7 music server.  Has anyone found one they like?  Thanks.

I know of nothing, but I agree that an iPad would make a great touchscreen controller for XXHighEnd - first thought I had when ipad was introduced.

The problem I would have with this, is that it requires WiFi in the audio PC. In this is not "allowed" ... says me. :)
Maybe with some intermediate product, like an Apple Airport (Extreme) (a wrireless router). But I don't know much about it.

I have used a program called WIFIRemote on my IPhone that works fairly well. Not sure if it is available for the IPad or not. Thought I would throw it out there anyhow. You have to install IReceiver on the computer. You can customize certain buttons to work with the Hotkeys. Haven't worked with it too much but seems to work well. I don't like having WiFi running much anyhow since it messes with the latency a bit.

Just get yourself a USB bluetooth receiver for that. I am not sure, but I don't think *that* harms.
Btw, there was someone in here who got that working with just a normal phone. Search for "bluetooth" and it will be easy to find I guess.

Does anyone out there have any experience on Peter's suggestion to put an I-pad in a home-network via WIFI to control XX-High End?

My hardware dealer is convinced that it should work but I would be very glad if one of you can comfirm that...

Regards,

Han

I have iPad viewer from Real VNC which works fairy well. My computer is hooked to a router and the router is connected to a wi fi modem/hub (I hope that is allow, Peter?)
You have to install a VNC server program on the computer and basically the computer screen shows up on iPad. It s not exactly touch screen as
when you touch teh screen, you are controlling the pointer/mouse so you have to manipulate the pointer to wherever you want. It takes a little bit of learning to
get equavalent control of right and left mouse button, select, drag etc. I tend to use my monitor to select music and use iPad for
stop, pause, next track, last track control as that is much easier. By the way, you can use any free VNC server program, not just Real VNC  so you only have to pay for iPad viewer.

THNX so far!

My hardware dealer claims that Apple builds-in certain software called RDP with which you can "take over" the desktop of your mediaserver (or any other server of course). Have you tried this?

Greetz!

Though I haven't tried any kind of remote, I can say that being connected to my wifi modem always created unwanted clicks and pops (sometimes barely perceptible) when playing XX in Vista. My current dual boot setup has no internet connectivity whatsoever on the vista side and the sound have never been better. With Win 7 I had no clicks and pops when wifi connected but Win 7 sound sucks.

Just my 2cents.
