Title: Can't play 96/24 with M-Audio Audiophile USB (AK4528 DAC)
Post by: edward on February 17, 2008, 01:02:37 am
I have similar messages as well. I'm trying to play a 24/96 WAV file. And I get:

-UNSUPPORTED FORMAT
-2/24/96000/264600/6
-Device (currently) does not support/allow Exclusive Use. It will not be bit perfect!
-INVALIDARG
-2/24/96000/264600/6
-Device cannot be allocated

My settings are DAC is 24bits 96KHz
and I tried both DAC needs 24 and 32.

I also tried playing a 16/44 file and checking upsample, but this does not work either. Peter, your post was unclear to me if upsampling 16/44 to 24/96 is supported or only playing 24/96 files. Also, FWIW, when I check upsample, then double automatically gets checked as well and I can't uncheck it or it unchecks both.

Upsample goes along with Double, so that's okay.
And no, upsampling from 44.1/16 to 96/24 is not supported yet (I tried just to explain that in the Releasenotes :)).

This definitely doesn't look right. Part of it will be my bad, part of it is the stupid Exclusive vs. Shared Mode system. What is fed here is invalid for arguments (INVALIDARG) and not Unsupported (oh, that will be true too, but first it's invalid).

I'll see what I can do about that ... (NOW btw).

OK Peter, I tried version 0.9u-0a, but not much different.

With DAC is 24bits 96KHz, I tried DAC needs 24bits and get (in order):

-UNSUPPORTED FORMAT
-2/24/96000/576000/6
-Device (currently) does not support/allow Exclusive Use. It will not be bit perfect!
-No Track given
-No Track Data found

Although I get all these messages, the position bar is moving as if music is playing, but I hear nothing.

When I select DAC needs 32bits, then I just get:
-No Track given
-No Track Data found

And again, although I get these messages, the position bar is moving as if music is playing, but I hear nothing.

He Edward,

If you try DAC is 16 bit, 44kHz?
This worked for me although my Dac (Terratec) is 192kHz and 24 or 32 bit!!

Hi GerardA,

Are you sure ?

I changed the setting to 32 bits (most often) and got some new messages and it started to play.

Anyway that's what you told in "your" topic. This can't be with the "DAC is" set to 16 bits ... :

With 16bit/44kHz I can not choose the 32 bit option, with 24/96 it is possible, maybe a small change for this?

:scratching:

Sorry I did not read well, but tried to help.

Just so there's no confusion, I have no problem playing 16/44 files with DAC is 16bits 44.1KHz.

This thread is only about playing 24/96.

GerardA, no problem !

Edward ... I'm puzzled. Q: Are you sure that your mentioned messages are not caused by the long(er) waiting because of the messages you so nicely copied into here ? So, supposed you clicked away the "UNSUPPORTED FORMAT" messages (at 32 bits ... I know, you did not mention them there) within a few seconds, would you still get the message "No Track given" etc. ? I know you are accurate, but please confirm, *and* whether you can copy this repeatedly. Somehow I can't trace something like this in the code ...

Thanks.

Yes, it does it repeatedly.

OK, let me try to illustrate this again. The file is 24/96.
If I select DAC is 24/96 as well as DAC needs 24bit, then I always get the "UNSUPPORTED FORMAT" messages.
If I select DAC is 24/96 and DAC needs 32bit  **OR**  DAC is 32/96 and DAC needs 32bit, then the position slider starts to move as if it is playing (but I hear no sound), and after about 5-10 seconds then I get the messages about "No Track given" and "No Track Data found".

Hope this helps.

Thank you Edward. I will look into this and hope to solve it. :aggressive:

Edward,

Could you please try at least one other track ...
It looks like the "file length" immediately tells the file has been played (hence it indicates the length wrongly). Or try several 96/24 files in the Playlist.
I see no other explanation (at this time ).

HOLY COW!! Do I feel like a horse's ass. (For those that do not know english slang that well - that means I'm extremely embarrassed) :blush1:

Indeed the track I was trying to play was one that I recorded off of vinyl (as 24/96). It was recorded and saved from Ableton Live. I tried playing some tracks I downloaded from High Def Tape Transfers and they worked just fine! (FWIW My DAC needs 32bits) So then I went back to my track that I recorded with Ableton and I re-saved it with Nero Wav Editor. Now that track plays just fine as well.

I'm sorry for wasting your time Peter. Thanks for being so patient.

Sorry guys for wasting space on this forum. I will be more thorough next time.  :sorry:

Hehe Edward ... I think it's okay. Remember, at first (0.9u-0) it really *was* wrong. You told it ...

So, thank you. :)
