Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Cannot boot into Ram-Disk anymore

Michael, when you boot into your backup image, how much RAM shows up? (Though you probably know: Program Manager/System: to check RAM) I couldn't boot into any RAM OS the other day so I put my old W8 Disk in and booted, checked RAM and saw that only 12 gigs were being recognized. I was very worried that one of my 4 gig sticks had failed, or, worse, that I had a MB problem. I then removed and reseated all four RAM sticks and 16 gigs was recognized again. Have no clue what happened but all is working now.

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Can't Boot into W10074 Base

Tried to boot into 10074 base and got the message below. Do I need to change the date in the Bios before booting into 10074? Was a bit tricky getting back into a usable OS. When the error message occurred my usb mouse and keyboard did not work; had to plug in the PS2 versions.

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Shut down issue for RAM OS 10586
|
on: January 25, 2016, 02:42:10 pm
|
Playing from RAM when I shut down the PC last night I first remounted the RAM OS drive using the "Cancel" button in the Boot Menu screen. I then closed the boot menu screen and then closed XXHighend. Then using the 10586 start button I hit Shut Down. All looked well, it started to shut down and I saw a message saying settings were being saved to permanent storage; however I ended up at the log in screen instead of shutting down. After having this happen 3 times in a row, I booted into 10586 base and then had no problem shutting down.

Joachim, glad I'm not the only one hearing the negative effect of RDC! Is it something in our respective systems or was the negative effect on SQ overlooked for the convenience of the RDC connection? I'll keep my opinion to myself. Anyway, i got everything working with the RAM OS, but we had company this weekend so I never was able to do any extended listening. However, with 10586 playing from RAM and all disconnected, including my usb music drive, Bassface Trio plays Gershwin sounded magical! I had a minor issue regarding shut down but will post about that in the support section. Still need to hear female vocals before making a SQ post. And this was without an Intona which will be here sometime next month. One problem with my configuration: I had to plug the USB music drive directly into the MB; it would get "lost" when it was plugged into the hub with the mouse and keyboard. Thus I just hit the power switch on the music drive once the music starts and all is well!

Interesting that putting the music on a usb hub with mouse and keyboard simply seems to work (unplugging and plugging back in) in all respects except when I use a playlist made up of many tracks from various cd's, which is how I have most of my music arranged. I've never used galleries and doubt that I ever will. Only with a playlist, when the hub is unplugged, do I get the "can't find cover art error." While a track is playing all the functions I require just work when i plug in the usb hub again. So again, my question is when I'm using a playlist, shouldn't my cover art error go away by ticking "Do nothing with cover art " in XX settings? Is that a fixable bug? As for band aide solutions, unplugging the usb hub from my listening position pales in comparison to getting out of the chair, crossing the room to the music pc and unplugging the HD from the music PC. My "system," if it can be made to work, will leave nothing plugged into the PC which is the goal afterall. Lastly, though I've gotten RDC to work here, the impact on SQ has always been substantially negative.

Gave my plan a try (Music on disc connected to usb hub which is disconnected, along with mouse and keyboard, when music begins) and was fine until going from track one to track two of the playlist I made. Music stopped between tracks and a cover art error message appeared. Thinking this was easy to solve, I went into XX settings and ticked "Do nothing with cover art." However, continued to have the same problem. Shouldn't ticking "Do Nothing With Cover Art" keep the program from searching for each track's cover art in a playlist from several cd's?

Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Upsampling: what's best?

Brian - too airy ? Can that exist ?
What are the downsides of that ??
Sorry for a stupid question, but I'd say that it never can be too airy. Unless you mean something else than what I have in my mind with "air".
Peter
Maybe airy is the wrong word. At 16x upsampling the "feeling" here is that the sound is too delicate. It lacks weight or what, to me, feels like presence. It's as though some vital information gets lost and I hear voices coming from heads instead of entire body's. Of course there is a bit of a trade off. At very high volumes the sound at 16x is a bit smoother but it still sounds lacking in the same way. Sorry I don't know how to describe this better. But the overall tone sounds more realistic here at 8x upsampling.
