Title: Mixed or straight Contiguous not working
Post by: HAL9000 on November 18, 2011, 06:32:32 pm
Hi Peter.
Just upgraded my pc for XX to work better.  I was hoping to get Mixed or Straight cont working as it did not work with my old pc.
I put in a new MB and processor, plus 8Gigs of Ram just to find that I still can't get other than mixed memory org to work
I do not minimize os or unattended.  I have searched through posts but seem to not find an answer to my problem...

any hints what could be wrong in my setup?

Sorry for a late reply ...

Let's start with what you perceive from it (hence what "error" message do you get).
Also, if you set the Split File Size to e.g. 12, does it still not work ?

Hi Peter. Thanks for answering.
I do not really get an error message. Just a new Icon on the process Bar.  It looks like the XX icon but in orange on a black background.  I attached a JPG image.  Even with a small sfs of 12MB and both in Mixed cont and straight cont the same happens. only works in mixed
In mixed I can use sfs of 400 or higher.  Frustrating as  it seems straight cont is the most prefered among users for sound quality...As I recall it on my old pc it said something like "engine 3 has stopped" or similar...
I use W7 home prem SP1.  I copied as much as possible from your setup in the footer of your posts...

Really, really strange. Never heard about "Mixed Contiguous" not working.
So, if you show the desktop (that little bar at the complete right in the Taskbar) and next click on that black/orange icon in the Taskbar, nothing like an error message shows ?

Ok, what about switching on Logging (at the bottom in the Settings Area) and post the X3 and X3PB logfiles of the session concerned ? Maybe it tells me something.
(the log files are under your XX folder in the TemporaryData folder)

Sorry about your problems, but it must be something strange and new ...
Peter

Here the log file.Right clicking on the taskbar icon brings up (see below)...

Ok, that is rightclick ... bit normal leftclick ? that doesn't pop up anything ?

Furthermore, I asked for the X3 and X3PB log files. This is an XX log file ... So, if you could perform another small attempt ... :)

Sorry I try again.
No, leftclicking makes nothing happen...

Here the hopefully correct files  :(

Hope you find the cure

Hi Peter.
I know you are a busy person, but did you think of anything that could cause mixed or straight cont. not working?
Could it be soundcard-driver related maybe?
Does Hyperthreading need to be active or not?

Couple of questions: what happens if you minimize the OS and then try mixed contiguous? Also, what is "Console W. Thuneau Arbitrator?" Maybe that has something to do with your problem?

Man ! I never saw your response ! Sorry about that ...

But now I am more sorry, because I can't make any sense of this (but maybe that is part of the problem). The files seem not to belong to eachother, or possibly you played there afterall ?

I hardly dare to ask it, but could you :

- Set the XXHighEnd settings so that the problem will occur (choose Mixed Contiguous); Put one track in the Playlist Area only (delete the others if necessary);
- Stop XXHighEnd and restart it;
- Start Playback (just Attended).

- Tell me what happens; best would be to wait until you see some sort of message. Tell me that too.

- Do nothing (so leave any message) but now grap the XX, X3 and X3PB logfiles. These will be the last new ones (so whatch the date/times and cause all to be sorted on date/time.

- Post these log files. You can send them to my email address if you want (that will prevent me missing your post again. :))/

Thanks !
Peter

Peter Don't be sorry.  I really appreciate you can find time to help.  I did like you said:
only 1 track
stop and restart XX
play....
immediately comes an error now saying  "necessary privileges have been set, Reboot to make them effective.."
after a minute or so another message with:
"engine #4 did not start within..."

Tried rebooting but doesn't help.  It keeps telling me to reboot..    :(
I attached the new XX and X3 files.  No new X3PB file was generated since i first started my PC this afternoon...not even after rebooting??

To boleary,  Console is a Host for arbitrator that is an active x-over to split between Quads and subs + room eq.  I will try to disable and see if helps...

Hi Peter.
It seems that the Local Security Policy menu does not exist in Home Premium  :(
Is there another way of locking memory pages?

/Jan

Look here: http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1642.0

Just scroll down to where CoenP talks about 'ntrights.exe'.

Please note that this trick worked for the 32 bit HE version. Dunno if this still goes for the 64 bits OS.

Thanks Coen.
I tried it.  It is only accepted without the last "s" in Administrators:

Ntrights +r SeLockMemoryPrivilege  -u Administrator

But still the same "Necessary Privileges...Reboot..." Message,  So no luck yet.

My Windows run 64 bits...

But Thanks for trying to help.  I appreciate it much.

:o Holy smokes!  It works now! :yahoo:
Thanks Peter , Manisandher, CoenP  for your assistance.
What was the trick?

That final "s" on administrators was important...BUT...in Danish the plural of administrator is with "er" in the end...
Typing that like shown here it was accepted, and after a reboot music was flowing instead of the usual warnings.

With straight Contiguous I can go up to 130Mb SFS.  Is that about normal with 8Gb memory?

Now it is time for some serious listening!!   :soundsgood:

Ntrights +r SeLockMemoryPrivilege  -u Administratorer

Hey hey hey Jan ... good !!

With 8GB you will be able to get SFS=500 (but to my own experience that is too much of it (nerveous sound). 430 works better for me (but it is for the NOS1 and this may make a difference too).

But

You must start playback one time as soon as possible after a reboot to get the higher SFS numbers. After that it keeps on working, until you throw out XEngine3.exe (is the same as using the Off button in the "Q"-panel.

Also, with Minimize OS getting the higher SFS numbers is way more easy (but shut those services down first in the XX-settings first).

Peter

PS: Thank you very much for sharing; this will really be helpful for a next one (at least I didn't know this).

Peter You are right.
After a reboot 500Mb SC is possible.

Everything is good now....and the sound :o
At least with 130Mb.  Have not listened long to 500Mb yet.

/Jan

and yes it is quite annoying with those language changes in different Windows versions..

Hi Jan,

Great to read that it worked! a little persistence gets a long way in computerland.

Now its my turn to get a sfs of more than 35 in my system.... :scratching:
