1  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 9-Z3 on: October 29, 2010, 12:37:43 pm
Thanks! Peter for the 9-Z3 version. Sounding Good. I had a chance last night to try different settings and so far I'm liking SFS.ini at 21, 11 not too bad either but more towards 21. I am using Special mode with Scheme-1 and the SFS at around 70. CPU is running at 2-4% and the memory usage around 1.2 gigs. Bass seems tighter, better vocals and soundstage running deeper a bit wider now. Will want to try some other settings over the weekend. I do have some issues with some of the music sounding a bit harsh in the treble region but probably do to the cr*ppy recording, AC line noise, cheap dac, room acoustics, and not enough brew, otherwise the best sounding version to date.

Juanpmar, In my Musiland control panel I have ASIO shut off and I'm using the WDM volume control for the Engine 4 setting. I usually set that to 100%, the Analog slider to 100% or the Digital slider to 100% for SPDIF output when using the Ack Dack and control the volume within XXHighEnd.

Under the Advanced tab in the Musiland control panel I have the SR control set to precision. There have been a few software upgrades with the Musiland and I'm not sure which version you are using but the lastest and I feel the best is the 1.0.10.0. version which I believe came out in July.
I don't use the MU-Bass control.

I few times I have set the SFS to anything below 90 the upper midrange and treble tends to be a bit bright and in your face than I like. I only had brief period to try different SFS settings. I really need a full day of listening to get a better idea of what settings work best. Maybe if I use higher Q settings than I could experiment with lower SFS, not sure yet.

The Q2-3 settings that I have been using in the past can vary depending on what artist I'm am listening too. If some of the music is bass heavy I keep the settings at zero but some earlier recordings with not much gain, I find 15-30 helps give them a little more warmth. There is so much difference from one recording to another which can make it tough to find an ideal setting for me anyway. With those settings, at the time, I had the SFS set at 110.

Hope this helps.

Hello juanpmar,

I use the Musiland Monitor 02USD and I have my buffer setting at 1024 which sounds best to me. I like using Adaptive mode with Q1=1 and Q2 and Q3 between 15 and 30 depending on what I am listening too and sometimes Q2 and Q3 is best at zero. I have been experimenting with the SFS setting a little bit and 95 seems to work well and if I start going below 95 I start to lose my bass but really haven't had time experimenting with those settings.

I have been using Scott Endler's passive attenuators for volume control which work well but usually set them at full volume once the amp has warmed-up and use the volume control on XXHighend since it is kind of a pain reaching behind the amp to change the volume. The attenuators do take away from the sound a bit even for a couple of resistors in the signal path. I have run direct from the dac to the amp which sounds great but afraid of some stray noise from Windows blasting through my speakers.

If you have any more questions about the Musiland let me know and I'll try to help out.

6  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 0.9z Install problems on: May 27, 2010, 01:40:19 am
I am having problems installing the new version. The first attempt went fine in demo mode then I clicked on some button in the software, at some point getting familiar with the new layout Happy, and it hosed up the computer. I ended up having to do a hard boot. I then brought 0.9z back up again successfully and I activated the new version, went to restart XXHighEnd and I get a message saying XXHighEnd had stopped working. I tried another reboot and the same thing. I did a reinstall of the software and the same. Went back to the previous version and it works fine. Maybe I didn't read the instructions well on this new version in my wild frenzy to try it out. Any ideas on where I went wrong?

7  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: Best iPad app for controlling a music server? on: May 12, 2010, 12:00:15 am
I have used a program called WIFIRemote on my IPhone that works fairly well. Not sure if it is available for the IPad or not. Thought I would throw it out there anyhow. You have to install IReceiver on the computer. You can customize certain buttons to work with the Hotkeys. Haven't worked with it too much but seems to work well. I don't like having WiFi running much anyhow since it messes with the latency a bit.
8  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 09-y8 on: March 13, 2010, 02:30:53 am
Enjoying 09-y8! Took awhile to find the ideal settings but well worth it. I am hearing more information off recordings than I thought was possible. Arc Prediction more detailed than Anti-image but the Anti-Image is a bit warmer and fuller sounding which I prefer for the few tracks I heard. I think I'll be going back and forth between the two settings depending on the music material. The y-8 version is the most stable with my laptop so far and no error messages.

Here are the settings that work best for me without the slo-mo static.

Quad Sampling, Anti-Image, Special Mode, Buffer-1024, Q1-1143 and 15/15/0/0.

Double Sampling same settings as above except Q1-661.

Great work again Peter!

9  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 9Y-6 special mode on: February 13, 2010, 03:13:04 am
I had a chance to do some serious listening today to 9Y-6 with engine #4 and I agree with the rest on this post with their findings. Compared to engine #3, I myself noticed the mid-range really came to life, the highs at first seemed a bit rolled-off but what I realize they were more refined and had less edginess.  Everything was smoother, more dimension and musicality.  I haven't worked with too many settings but been happy with Q1 =5, Q2-3= 10 and Q3-4=0. I should have done some more listening between engine #3 and #4 with different music material but wanted to see what all the excitement was with KS and its sweet!  Thank-you Peter!

10  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: How to get the best digital signal from PC? on: February 11, 2010, 08:55:09 pm
Hi Adrian,

I just started using the Musiland Monitor 02 US dac/usb-spdif converter that does asynchronous quite well at around $135- $150.  I'm still trying to get familiar with the unit, works well as a stand alone dac and enjoying it with my NOS dac.  I haven't had too much time to do some serious listening but from what I'm hearing, in my less than ideal listening room, is quite amazing.  There are other versions, a dac only unit and a converter only unit, that are usb powered.  The 02 is AC powered.  Once I get a chance to do some more listening and trying Peter's latest software upgrade I'll post my thoughts on the Musiland.  Hope this helps

11  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9y-4 - w00t on: October 20, 2009, 01:00:39 am
Hi Peter,

Latest version sounds wonderful! Don't have the ability to use the Arc Prediction since I can only do 16-bit but still getting amazing sound with the other upsampling settings. There is more depth, better clarity in the upper spectrum without being harsh, vocals are almost friggin' scary real! Better mid-bass which I had issues with in my system and room acoustics, music seams a bit more dynamic, soundstage is better and I find now I can use the Q settings at 4/0/0/0/0 to get the most balanced sound where before those settings would sound a bit weak in the bass and little bright in the upper mid-range. I have had thoughts of getting another dac to take advantage of the higher sampling rates and maybe sometime in the near future I will but the current set-up is sounding amazing with your latest version.

Nice Work!

12  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9x-5 on: March 22, 2009, 07:55:23 pm
The 0.9-5a version sounds great. I am using scheme-3, Q1 at 4, Q2 and Q3 between 20 and 30.  All sliders at Q0 sounds a tad brighter, the soundstage seems a little more forward and the bass is a bit weaker, less slam.  Some of my music material might sound better with the sliders at Q0 since some recordings are bass heavy.

I am having an issue with selecting the next track in Attended mode, it will highlight the song but will not play unless I hit the Pause button then Play.  Otherwise sounding wonderfull, chill-up-the-spine sound!

13  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: .9x-5---No Sound on: March 22, 2009, 02:43:03 pm
Hi Peter,

The 0.9x-5a seems to be working now, I only had a brief moment to turn on the system and the DAC is getting signal now. I will have more time later to listen. Thank-you for getting it resolved quickly.

14  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: .9x-5---No Sound on: March 22, 2009, 11:43:05 am
I went back tried the .9x-5 version and the USB DAC (USB AUDIO DAC) came up as my chosen device but no signal to the dac but I was getting sound from the laptop speakers. I get no signal to the DAC no matter what device is selected.  Usually the PC volume control shuts off when the DAC is plugged in the USB port but aparently not with this version.
15  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: .9x-5---No Sound on: March 21, 2009, 04:27:03 pm
I have the same problem with no sound but only through the dac. I do get sound if I choose the Primary Driver setting in which the music comes through the laptop computer only. I am using Engine #3 in both cases.
