Title: 176,400 HiRes Problem
Post by: Scroobius on October 25, 2011, 09:01:15 pm
Hi Peter,
Mani visited today for a listen and a chat. Just before he arrived I tried a 176,400 Hires file. It played fine for about 1 1/2 minutes then the sound collapsed into a loud static mess. So I tried another 176,400 file - same thing. I mentioned it to Mani and same happened to him but only on 176,400. No problems with other formats as far as we know (but not sure I have files in all formats though). Just thought we ought to let ya know.
All the best
Paul

I have the same problem! It happens when trying to play SACD PS3 rips converted to WAV 24/176.4 by Foobar plug-in.
In the past I did not have this problem with my Rolling Stones 24/176.4 Flac files purchased from HDTracks.

I discovered this myself only a few weeks back. So far I have no clue, nor can I see the logic of it. It seems to be driver related, because as far as I can tell it only started to happen with the 768 driver. Of course I must mention (for others) that this will be an NOS1 thing only.

Point is also that this is about 4x 176.4 (IIRC 192 is ok ? not sure anymore ...), which is not possible in any other situation (because of the 705.6 result). But as far as I can tell it happens at the boundaries of trackparts loading (so, the larger the SFS the longer it will stay away). But it REALLY seems a strange thing to me.

At 2x 176.4 it doesn't happen; at 8x 88.2 it also doesn't happen (nor at 16x 44.1 of course).

Ok, now you found out I really should look into it I guess ...

If you haven't already tried, you should find Weiss Saracon will do a much better job of conversion than the current Foobar plugin.

Extract the individual DSD files first from the rip, then use Saracon for convert to WAV using TPDF dithering option.

Cheers,

Russ

Btw, it wasn't in the first post, but if I had to decide, this only happens with 4x 176.4. So, playit natively (or 2x) and nothing is the matter.

Yes, this appears to be the case with me also - only 4x 176.4 is a problem here.

BUT... when playing an HRx 24/176.4 file natively through the NOS1, it sounds pretty good... but taking it to 24/705.6 with QAP makes it sound stunning! But only for a minute or so before all hell breaks loose.

Mani.

When others want to try it out :
The hell is quite easy to take here. It's just fuzzy digital sound at the level of the music. Nothing like static (*that* would be hell :blob8:)

Played my Miles Davis KOB SACD iso rip tonight, converted from DSD to 24/176PCM, and it played fine at x2 upsampling.
