Title: Playback directory; woww
Post by: hf on October 17, 2012, 08:08:46 pm
I just want to make everybody aware that the playback directory can have a huge effect on SQ.. Peter mentions it in his release notes but further I see not many posts about it.
This afternoon I used it for the first time. As playback directory I use a directory on a new 16Gb USB stick (5 euro..) instead of running directly from my 2 RAID spinning disks.
The effect is stunning: in my system as big as PA... (as far as you can 'measure' that with your ears). More 'black'/quiteness, a very attractive sparkling high and a deeper/more full sound.
Recommended!

Hein

No problem Hein,

If I remember correctly, you used Berkeley Alpha DAC before. Just notice from your sig that you switched to NOS1 USB already. Congratulation!

Hi All,

After reading this about a Playback drive I did some tests myself. And I also came to the conclusion that the sound is much better now.
The music files are on a external 2TB WD elements USB drive with its own power and as Playback drive a Maxell 32 Gb USB key. Also LAN is off now.
For my situation the USB key as Playback drive is much better then a external USB HHD.
One thing I notice, but not sure if it is related, is that I can use Straight continuous now. Before only Mixed was possible. I have one question: Should the Playback drive be larger? Or should I just make it empty sometimes?

kind regards, Arjan

Hi Arjan,

No, you donīt necessarily need more than those 32Gb, it depends on the size of your Playlist. The files in the Playback Drive are WAV files, that means that you could have a Playlist of around 20/50 albums in 32Gb, it depends on the albums size.

Each time you turn off XXHighEnd the Playlist is erased.
