Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: SPDIF Cable, longer is better! (Interesting articel)

Just want to update this thread. I am ill (damn weather) and have time to play with my hifi-system. I planed to buy the legato but it was not available for al long time, things changed and I canceled the order. One interesting thing is, that upsampling was never really working for me and I had the best sound with 44.1/16bit. 88.2/32 sounded refined but also laked dynamic. It was one step forward and two back. One day I tryed the 24bit setting and felt it has the analog sound like 32bit but is as dynamic as 16bit. That was a nice improvement and I listened to 44.1/24bit. In the last weeks I tweaked the bnc input of my dac. I now use a " bnc feed through jack". I connect a bnc cable from the outside of the dac and instead of soldering twisted pair at the inside of the dac I can now connect BNC also from the inside! So I can go 75Ohm straight to the board. This was a quite hearable improvement. I tell this because I think it explains why today, as I am experimenting with xx, doubling has become an option for me again. Before this tweak I lost dynamic and gained a refined sound. I didn't liked this. Now it sounds refined but without losing dynamic. (Maybe the upsampled signal is more sensitiv to the transmmision over spdif?) But if I get best sound with 88.2/24bit why buy a 44.2/16 bit only device? Doesn't make sense anymore and that is why I will try the audiophilleo2 instead. Should be able to improve over my standard hiface. One thing lasts. 24bit ist still better than 32bit. If someone like to try this out and tell me what he hears, it would be interesting. Greetings Adrian

I've bee using the evo for a couple of weeks. One of the reasons I got it was to use the AES/EBU with my dac. There are different opinions if AES/EBU is better than a coaxial cable (spdif) at all and some technical experts I trust say coax is better. I say why using twisted pair if you can use a coaxial cable, which should be better for nf signals because of impedance matching, shielding and maybe more things. So, best "sound" comes from coax with bnc connectors. That's my opinion.

I just want to tell this somebody who would not call me crazy... I listened to music and all the time I thought, somehow it just does not sound good today. So I played with xx-parameters...,nothing that sounded good. I looked to my hifi-system and recognized that there were two mobile chargers plugged in the wall outlet beside my amp and my dac...pulled them out and sound was fine again.....crazy

Haha! Mani, dCS sounded wrong fed by Cantatis (coaxial or optical) and Cantatis was better as a DAC than as a tranport combined with dCS - strange, but true. The same was with Sony drive, but with RME - oh boy, Cantatis sounds like cr*p compared to dCS, so you see, nothing is plain, but I'm sure of one thing - a DAC should be fed by an outside source, totally isolated from the PC (Firewire?) I can affirm this. I used a RME HDSP9632 as spdif source some years ago. Sounded like cr*p. A decent CDP was faaaar better but now with highface and the new version of xxHE PC has become better. Don't know where this will go with the Legato but I expect a significant step up (still waiting for it to come).

My "final" setting is sfs.ini=01. 11 and 21 is to sharp and focused on the highs. sfs=150. I went up from Buffer32 q1=6 to Buffer=512 q1=1 to bring the highs down which were just to focused. I meanwhile tried adaptive but it doesn't bring that power in the bass and the defined highs of special. I now prefer scheme 1 too.

Flecko, I tried RAMdisk (1500mb) in Win7 today with all the same setting in Z3 for both Vista and Win7 (SFS 200, 11) scheme 2, buffer 1024, 4x AP, Vista is still clearly better. Under Vista, the sound is smoother, more liquid and for a lack of better word, more analog, in my system. Under Win7, the voice is thinner, a bit more edgy. I used to think that with Win7, the sound is still pretty darn good and already surpass using CD in my CD Player/DAC a bit, now it is even better. Thank you very much for checking this! I will try a second Windows install soon.

@CoenP: It is the first time I played with these settings. I can hear what you describe. 10 I would describe as softer. 21 I would prefer a bit because it has more dynamics in the mids. But the neighbours have craftmen in the house and they are drilling all the time , hence listening is a bit difficult at the moment
