What do you think the squeezebox is - there's no PC in there - it's a network device that converts files (stored on a remote PC Linux or Win server) delivered over the ethernet to SPDIF!
Hmm, ok. But I still need a PC to manage the playback or can I just plug the hard drive and listen? Did you compared the soundquality of the spdif out with other devices?

I am looking for something like this:
http://www.pixelmagicsystems.com/products/media_players/hd_mediabox.htm
but don't know if it is the best system available.

Squeezebox receiver without the controller & using iPod Touch as remote control (iPeng software)Happy
this is not what i am looking for. I like somthing that can read files from a harddrive and convert it to spdif, without using a pc or any kind of windows ce in the unit itself.

Another thing. I have looked around and found there are media harddrives on the market, which can give a spdif signal from musicfiles stored on harddrive. This could be a solution for the PC playback problem because you don't need a pc to play the files. Does somebody know a good product? Has anybody made experiences and compared to pc and CDP playback?

Thanks for the information. it is a pitty the m2tech is not relay designed to be a highend converter and still need mods. But it seems worth a try if not something better will show up.

A highend converter is/will be available BUT do you want to spend thousands of dollars - look to dCS, Wavelength, Empirical Audio - they all have USB products at these prices?

Of course I don't want to pay very much money on this extrem expensive stuff from dCS, wavelength etc... I don't know what a usb2-spif converter made by them costs but I guess it costs to much. The point is, that i don't want to tweak around a lot. I've been doing this for a long time and it is very time consuming. I like something that I just can use. Such things needn't to be expensive. There are good things on the market. They cost nearly nothing and are sounding very well. Like my Jungson JA-99C power amp. Costs 400€ and sounds like 4000€. Happy

Thank you for that information. I just saved 100€ Happy I read in the diyaudio thread. They say it could be connected directly to the usb port. I use 5m usb cable "directly" into my usb-spdif-dac without spdif cable. Whats your experience with digital cable? Is it better to use 5m spdif cable than 5m usb?
442  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / How to get the best digital signal from PC? on: February 11, 2010, 11:31:00 am
Hi Peter and everyoneelse,
I am using a usb-spdif converter to feed my Chord DSC1100 DAC. Before I was using the spdif out of my rme-hammerfall soundcard but the usb device is better. Now I discovered a special driver for usb-asio from aqvox which sounds realy great. But it costs 100€ so i like to know if there is something better bevor i spend the money on that driver.
With xxhighend, some win7 tweaks and cMP I have now a better spdif-signal than with my Pioneer PD-S06 CD-Player. But it is not that much better. I like to know a few things:
Is there a better way to obtain a spdif signal than with usb-spdif converter?
Do you know a usb-spdif converter using asynchronous mode (my usb-spdif device from hoer-wege is just synchronous)?
What else can I do to improve the sound quality from my PC? I read often that PC must be a lot better even than the best transports. The Pioneer is great but not the best, so there must be some space to improve further.
To my setup:
I have a core2dou with asus pq5 pro board, fanless PSU (150€!), Bluerayburner LG, made some tweaks in device manager, shuted down services, in generel i did what they said on cplay/cmp homepage. I get a delay of 120us with my system. it is ok but i have seen some of you have a much better performance.
Thanks for your help! Greetings Adrian
443  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Writing .wav files to HDD using a Blu-Ray writer - they sound better to me on: December 11, 2009, 05:41:21 pm
Hi everyone,
i can affirm this finding. I was one year away from audio, sold everything because I was nerved by this neurotic feeling you get if you care too much about sound Wink In this time I listened to my Tivoli Model Three most of the time. CD-Playback was done with PC, using Vista and A WASAPI Player. Speaker and Amp was the Tivoli Radio fed by my RME Soundcard. I bought the LG Blueray writer and just threw in a cd without ripping it. I used direct playback. Better highs was my first impression. I was happy and forgot about it because I didn't cared much in that time. Now I am back Wink and build a nice pair of Speakers (Hobby Hifi Platino Highend Version) using a Jungson JA-99C Poweramp a van Look passive pre, a Chord DSC1100 DAC and a Pioneer PD-S06 CD Transport. My computer is connected via Hoer-Wege USB-SPDIF converter (which is far better than my old rme Hammerfall HDSP 9632 SPDIF-out). Now I testet again, with an old file I ripped with my Plextor DVD Burner and now ripped again with the LG Bluerayburner. It is obvious sounding better. Clearer and cleaner highs, more dynamic sound.
It probably might be not only the LG Burner making the difference. Also I used IDE cable on my Plextor, the LG is connected with SATA. Ripping technique still the same (EAC without any hooks in the CD-Drive reading menue). Now I am using windows 7, which is an improvement in playback compared to vista. If it makes a difference if you rip the CD's in w7 I don't know, but it is possible (nothing is impossible in this hobby ). Even the mediaplayer sounds better than the old WASAPI player I used bevor. For XX I can not tell the difference.
Greetings Adrian

Hi Peter,
I tried it once again with the newest version 0.9v-6a. It is still like that: drag file into the playlist, play the file...everythings ok. close xx and move or delete the file. Start xx again. Then select the file and click play...error accured engine3.exe stops working...try it if yo don't beleave me.
Greetings Adrian
445  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Hi Peter on: September 01, 2008, 10:04:32 pm
Hi,
Quote
Upon starting 0.9v-3a, if the path specified in the most recent playlist ( !CurrentlyPlaying.PLXX ) was no longer valid, the program would bring up an error condition window and request for the program to be closed. It was necessary to delete that playlist entry before XXHE would stay up and continue as normal.

With 0.9v-4, that same condition now brings up a different error message window titled "Show CoverArt" and says "Could not find a part of the path 'X:\XXXXXXX\XXXXXXX' etc. Clicking on the OK button now allows you to access XXHE as normal and you can then click on the 'clear' button to remove the entries in the current playlist. This solution has effectively solved the bug seen in 0.9v-3a.

Yes it is like this. I tried it once more this time with 0.9v-4. The only thing that still happens is vista telling that engine3 stopped working and asks if this program should be closed. After selecting "close" you can use xx onward.

Greetings Adrian

Hi Peter,
it was that simple thanks. I discovered another bug, wich is no prob for me but I like to help improving so I report. When I load files in the playlist and move the files afterwards into another folder, xx crushes direct at start with  a message that the folder doesn't exist.
447  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Hi Peter on: August 19, 2008, 03:23:01 pm
Thanks Peter, I disabled UAC and now it works fine. Still one thing. XX doesn't remeber my settings, any idea?

448  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Hi Peter on: August 16, 2008, 09:20:54 pm
Hi Peter,
I made it and installed Visat Happy Congratulations to you player, the soundquality is realy good and better than iTunes! But I have some problems runnig it. I installed xx on two pc's with vista32 ultimate and on both I can't drag files into the playlist when I start xx as administrator. This doesn't happen when i start it just with "open". The other prob is that on on pc I get an error massege when I start in normal mode saying "Unhandled exception occured in your application...". So I can't use it on this pc at all unhappy
Thank you and greetings
Adrian

449  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: .9d---.9r on: November 14, 2007, 11:49:13 am
Hi Peter,
Quote
Yeah yeah, I know, you just wanted me to remind about the W2K machine, which is since -what was it, last Christmas ?- sitting and waiting for me to try. yes. But you know, it is hard these days to want it, because Vista Engine#3 can only be better than #1 or #2, no matter it would be bit perfect W2K.
I admit to have thought about reminding you  Wink...but this was not the matter. I will look sometimes to your site and perhaps you will made it somtime...no prob.

Quote
The support for 96/24 (etc. etc.) will be available for XP/W2K just the same, although I am not sure (the kernel of) Engine#2 can take that.
When that is not so indeed, we are in bad luck, because the Engine#1 left, will still have the 64MB limit, but the files will be larger ...
That indeed would be a problem...perhaps I should try Vista sommtime...

Quote
So if you find something in the Release Notes that does not work for you, please say so, or wait till the next version where this will be solved.

There is a critical error when listen to the player version .9pd and .9r. Sometimes when the next track is loaded the system freezes stone cold. Nothing except a hardware reset can awake the pc again. It has nothing to do with the size of the track. It happens even if the next track is just 1 min. There's no hurry to solve this for me...should just be a bug report.

Best wishes and greetings
Adrian

Hi Peter,
it's been a while since I was here, so I was curious how you newest version sound....respect...although you didn't developed for XP/2000 the sound improved remarkable on 2000! Much cleaner and more cynamics. The support for mp3 and flac is also a very good desicion...I don't have such files but you never now if one comes along Wink And some music ist just available on mp3 like Dj sets.
I recognized that with E1 I can't play files with length more than 6min. I have 1gig of ram, normaly it should work ..? With E2 there is no poroblem.
Is the support for 24/96khz also planed for XP/2000?
Greetings Adrian
