PS:
I just found that the Audio Note should have an efficiency of 97db...with a two way design it is not possible to get a deep bass and such an high efficiency. No way. Either the speakers are not as efficient as they claim (then your amp is maybe to small) or they can not have the bass you want from them. Do you have meassurements of the speakers?

My 2 cents:
Try another amplifier. -> I just bought a Rotel RB-1070 to make an experiment. It is not expensive on the used market and it has 120w/8ohm meassures very good and has a big damping factor. The result compared to my 80w/8ohm class a amps: Much more and better controled bass and overall better sound. I also thought about the gain clones but I found them not powerfull enough to drive speakers with 82db@1W. The Rotel will be replaced by a Chord SPM-650 which has more or less the same specs but it is a more "high end" design. Will see what that will bring to the sound.
Having a two way design with the port on the back is maybe a problem. -> Try a three way design, then you can place the port on the front. That will bring a deeper and better sounding bass.
Don't waste to much time and money on your room. A good system can sound good in every "normal" room, even if it is L shaped. I see the problem in
1: Amplification
2: Speakers

Just a short remark: The best system I have heard on the High End included a  CD-PLayer (Chord CD-Red), which uses upsampling to 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz! *We know that from a certain program...and DAC *

Hi All,
I visited the High-End on Tour 2012 in Darmstadt today(04-05.02.2012). I want to give you a small impression of what I have heard. The system I would have taken home, if I had to choose a complete demonstration set, would have been Chord CD Red + Chord Pre CPA3000 (Not sure wich model) - Two Chord SPM 1400E on Dynaudio Evidence Series. The bass was for sure the biggest weakness of the system and could be better with another speaker. But the musical presentation was very good. There was a natural sound, especially there was not this high frequency "noise" so many other systems produce. The chord-dynaudio system was very engaging and animated to swing to the music. Very nice. I also liked the esoteric system with canton reference. Which was also a very fine system but not the one I would have chosen because of the "noisy" sound in the highs. The salesman of esoteric had no idea of the technology but he was the best at presenting his system. Not too loud, not too long tracks. I enjoyed it. The biggest surprise was the new Marin Logan electrostatic speakers. A very dynamic and intense sound with surprisingly good bass out of a very small cabinet. Despite some instruments were falling apart because of tonality issues, it was very exciting to listen to this speaker and it is one of the " want to have at home" items. Also amazing were the Diapason Karis. Unbeliveable how much bass these tiny speakers were producing, while the speakers vanished completely. They were driven by an Northstar Essensio and a Mastersound tube amp. With a good transistor amp and a better DAC like for example the NS Extremo this could be all you need. My Award for the best bass gets the Avangarde Acoustics Trio with 4xBasshorn. Very fast and deep. Also the midrange/highs were detailed and relaxed even at volumes where other speakers seem to shout at you. Disadvantage to me was, the sound was falling appart and I guess this is due to the big displacement between the drivers BUT if you are sitting in the right place this problem could be manageable. The AA Duo could be even better in this aspect. Still AA Duo is on my favorites list. I was disappointed by Backes and Müller and ATC. Active systems are by many people considered to be "the best" but they could not convince me. I was listening to a B&M line 35. There was a lot of high and midrange detail but just boring, dry, flat, harsh...Not my cup of tea. The Salesman from ATC screwed up the volume till my ears start to bleed. The bass of the ATC SCM 100 SL At was a little disappointing. A little rumbling and not very clear. Mids and highs seems to be very good and if the presentation would have been better, this could have been a good demonstraion with a good speaker. Maybe because they have 100% analogue technology they sounded more natural than the B&M. All in all I had a wonderfull and interesting day. Hope you enjoied my small review. Greetings Adrian

BUT they completely lost their attractive bass quality in my room and sounded light in the upper bass in just the same way that my speakers do.

I hope nobody will kill me Wink but that is a problem I know and I have solved it with using an active pre amp (NOT by turning up the bass volume, which is not possible with my pre).

Or the other way around? Berlin is well worth a visit. NOS1, HP500 SE, ... Wink
Thanks, but at the moment I am short on time. Maybe in a month or two, if you still need a XX-PC then.

- EAC: seems more lay back and smoother at first glance.

- dBpoweramp Reference: seems more in front, more edgy at first glance but at the end is that it is just more detailed and the scene is reacher. The highs are smoooooth and beautiful. The sound seems a little louder than with EAC, I guess that it´s due to a fuller soundstage with a perception of a wider and deeper 3D space.
Hi juan and thanks for your post. What I do not understand is why the programs should lead to a different sound when the files they produce are bit by bit identical. At least when they are correctly set up they should produce the same files. Shouldn't the sound difference be introduced by other things like were they are stored or something else?
You could try hex compare to compare the files. If they are different then there is a wrong setting in one of the programs. If they are identical there can not be a fingerprint of the ripping program. The sound differences must come due to something else.

Thanks guys! I like to play it and listen to the sound very much. I love instruments where a single note played already is rewarding.

Thanks a lot Peter for the offer. And I will take it up if there will be an opportunity to combine this trip with something else. It is not a long time anymore until I will have finished my studies. And as I have sudied something usefull, all will be well. Just some month...

It was more a joke at first to sell the guitar here but anyway, I now complete the offer: It is a Jochen Röthel 2004 (hauser style) Cedar Top and Caviuna side and back  (some kind of rio). Frensh polish, best mechanics incl case. Hardly played. New (2009), they sell for 6200€. I sell for 3500€. The buyer will make a good deal I think. In the USA you pay 8000 to 10000$ for a Röthel and in GB 5500 pound (simple rosewood) to 6000 pound.

I have three guitars (acoustic, flamenco, classical) all of high or very high quality and no time to play all of them. So it is some kind of waste to just have them and not playing them as they deserve it. I selected all my guitars with the same enthusiasm as I build my hifi system. The cassical guitar is of course the most expensive one and the one I could give away with the smallest feeling of loss. I am in the first place a steelstring guy and second I like the sound of the flamenco guitar a lot. Even if the classic guitar is the better instrument and build like a dream. In fact, you are right. But I am realy, realy curious how the nos1 sounds. And I fear I have to wait a little longer....teasing

Somebody like to buy a Master build Classical Guitar, that a poor student can buy a NOS1? Wink

If you down sample in the way you suggest then you HAVE TO apply a brick wall filter so that images (per Nyquist) do not appear in the audible band in the 16/44 file. That is potentially a VERY VERY bad thing to do to the sound quality and means it would never be possible to do a meaningful comparison.
It is maybe affecting the sound but it is by far not the worst thing that can happen. Using a bad sounding reverb, overdooing it with equalizers or compressors can realy destroy the sound. And that is what is done in the first place. We were lucky if we could realy complain about downsampling. Also there is an advantage of recording in an higher sample rate because of the headroom that is needed to mix the musik.

Quote
Well in terms of upsampling Peter has shown it is possible to do a good job - but how many others do?
I know this is some fundamental thing and it is likely that not much people agree but the best dacs I have heard are "normal" upsampling dacs. Not that I heard the best dacs in the world but at least they are not that bad even if upsampling is done in the "normal" way. So, what I want to say is, that upsampling or downsampling are not what we should argue about. The bad guys are the overmixing and overmastering tone engineers (and all the mechanisms that lead to their incompetence). This affects the sound WAY more. And to change that it "just" needs some education and no technical revolution. Every thing is there to create a good sound from pocket money recording equipment. It just has to be done in a right and sensible way.
