Title: M-Audio Transit won't play (WASAPI/KS)
Post by: PeterSt on February 14, 2010, 11:40:48 am
I can't get special mode with my M-Audio Transit (USB, TAS1020B). The lowest Q1 setting without cracks is at 3.

Wait for the next version. All is increadibly more "refined". So, steps in between Q1 values are way smaller. And again, you just can choose Special Mode there. ... Which of course doesn't guarantee that you will be without cracks ...

Also I can't play KS/WASAPI at 24/96, but that's in every player - M-Audio drivers suck!

Why ? what is the message with Engine#3 (WASAPI) ?

ENDPOINT CREATE FAILED -> The DAC does not accept this byte sequence;
Try switching DAC Needs from 32 to 24 (or the other way around)

and then I get "Device cannot play"

Tried 32 and 24, either way is the same. DAC is 24bits 96kHz
Note, that ASIO works flawless at 24/96...

BTW, I'm back to Q1=3, Q2,Q3,Q4,Q5=0
With manisandher's settings (Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4/Q5 = 3/9/15/5/10) it plays muffled, without energy and proper attack. Also the soundstage is withdrew. Even my girlfriend says so :D It is good for someone who uses very bright systems, with metallic, harsh highs. That would definatelly help to smooth the sound. It works similar to audiophile power cords and cables, but if you need true imaging, I'd stay with Q2,Q3,Q4,Q5 at 0.

Peter, I don't know if that helps you, but Empirical Audio Offramp Turbo is basically modified M-audio Transit. In previous version it even used m-audio drivers. As far as I know Steve from Empirical Audio replaced this with driverless firmware from CEntrance.

You left out the most important : that sequence of numbers which follows in a message. But, also tell exactly what you are trying to play when the message accordingly shows (don't forget to mention Double etc.).

With my M-Audio Audiophile USB I am able to adjust the latency. Marcin, are you able to do the same?
()

By setting it to its lowest point I am now able to set q1 to 1, though special mode still doesn't appear in the X3PB file. Below that I get distortion. Yesterday, without realizing, the latency was at the highest setting and I had to set Q1 to 7.

I am able to play 24/96 here with no problem.

Okay, not being too techy, I have only skimmed through the posts about latency and buffer size cause, until now, kernel streaming just sounded wrong. It now sounds quite wonderful but very different from engine 3 (I still need more time to work through "preferences"). So could someone breifly explain what it is about latency, buffer size and sound quality that I just don't really understand. I guess I could go back and try to figure it out, but a brief explanation might be easier.....  :) Thanks.

I'm trying to play 24/96 wav. I try one more time later and give you info about the numbers

In my M-Audio Transit the buffer size in drivers options doesn't affect KS a all. The lowest Q1 setting for KS is at 3 for me. Lower I get distortions.

Not sure what you're implying here. That my system is bright, with metallic harsh highs??? You must be kidding.

I think I've always been at pains to state that any results that I'm getting are valid for my system only. When you start using QAP with a NOS 24/176.4 DAC, you may find that your current system is actually flat and lifeless...

Easy guys. This stuff works differently for everybody. I'm sure Marcin had this in mind when he wrote what he wrote, and sure is not implying that my - or your system is (too) bright.

And otherwise we should always blame his girlfriend. Haha.

It's my opinion based on my system and preferences :) For me, your settings sound too smooth. For jazz and classics great, for rock - not specially.

For me, your settings sound too smooth.

This is absolutely fine by me - I would be amazed if my settings sounded good with a setup such as yours.

Well, no matter what Peter thinks, there is a definite implication here... and a somewhat arrogant one at that.

Nuff said...

Well my system is like that when the source gives it to me...

Hi Marcin,

I also have Offramp and KS works great!

Not sure if this helps you, but I have Transit set to 16/44 _both_ in M-Audio panel _and_ in Control Panel. For some reason Control Panel always resets the card to 24/44 after reboot or plugging the USB cable in/out and I have to manually switch it to 16/44 otherwise some software (eg Media Player Home Cinema for movies) does not produce sound at all.

I see you are trying to play 24/96 wav - I never tried that as my DAC is 16/44 only (Audio Note) so I can't help you there but 16/44 definitely works in both WASAPI & KS...

Cheers,
Josef

Interesting ...

This means (regarding the rest of your post Josef) that what I always call "24 bit only" (like I would for the OffRamp) only counts for WASAPI. So, it would be a WASAPI bug that it can't address such a device with 16 bits. I mean, if KS can ...

But did you indeed denote your DAC as 16/44.1 in the Settings Area ? and if not, how is your DAC Needs setting ?

Thank you,
Peter

Hi Peter,

>But did you indeed denote your DAC as 16/44.1 in the Settings Area?

Yes.

Not sure if this helps you but AFAIK keep in mind that Off-ramp comes in different varieties: I have the initial v1 ('old') version which was based on Transit chip (same as in M-Audio Transit USB converter, although sound is drastically better with Off-ramp (I have both so could compare:) ).

Newer Off ramp (v3 definitely, v2 not sure) is based on a different chip which does not need/use M-Audio drivers. Maybe '24-bit' issue only applies to that version?

Cheers,
Josef

Ah, thanks. I was talking about V3 (CEntrance based IIRC).
