Title: Windows Start icon on screen in XXHE 0.9x-5
Post by: Eric on March 21, 2009, 09:34:07 am
Peter,
re. Model 0.9x-5,
When I start XXHE with Show as Wallpaper and Stop Services ticked, there is still a small Windows Start icon in the lower left corner of the screen. Is this as designed ? I can start XXHE again through this Windows menu, so I do not necessarily need Alt-X, Right ?

Ciao, Eric.

I also have the tiny START button segment remaining when the rest of the taskbar disappears. It's look is very basic and plain though, none of the colouring that is typical of a desktop theme.

Perhaps of note is that upon starting XXHE ( before any play functions are done ), the system tray disappears immediately from the taskbar. The system tray can be returned to normal by dragging the taskbar to double height. You can then reduce it to single height again.

Russ

About the Sytem Tray thing ... I will look into that. I thought it removed by bringing up the Taskbar, but apparently this happens in another stage. Thanks.

Then that Startbutton.
This is a most weird thing, of which I thought I has solved it. But apparently this is not the same for every PC.
So, no, it is not intentional that it stays.

Heck, although I had similar situations here, and knowing how much trouble it took to get it right, now I'm afraid I will never be able to solve it for an unknown situation.

What are your both exact OS versions ?

Hahaha, no, not in this situation.

Just plain 'ol Vista Ultimate 32bit edition and NO services packs have been installed.

I've tried different themes etc. to see if that makes any difference but hasn't as yet.

1280 x 800 desktop res.

I had already disabled a number of unwanted services as per the earlier thread ( mid last year I suppose it would have been ). Perhaps that is interferring with things.

0.9x-5 sounds great though   :)

Cheers,

Russ

And I have Vista Ultimate with SP1 and all available updates installed.
In addition to unnecessary services, I also shut down my LAN connection before I start playing.

Peter,
after having played an album (or a track), I close XXHE and apparently the (stopped) services are restored. I am now back on the desktop. However, something has changed. The Windows Start button has changed to a different icon, and also the whole look and feel of Vista is different. Looks like also the resolution has changed. I hope that this description helps you to find what goes wrong and to fix it.

Cheers, Eric.

I know what you mean Eric. In this case things are just not restored. Try the Services button and you will see. Or ?

It can happen, however, that the start button stays strange. I had that too when it wasn't working here. A reboot solved that at the time.
But this is not the intention of course.
Grrrr

Also in version 09x-5b i don't need Alt-X.

So you have everything but the Start Button ? :swoon:

Did anything change for you compared to the original 0.9x-5 ?

This is solved now in 0.9x-5b.

Seems to work as intended here now  :goodjob:

Cheers,

Russ

BTW .... if you _need_ to run something else while in this mode, you can still access your 'Start' menu by pressing the "WINDOWS" key on your keyboard. Normally located on the bottom left somewhere.

Johan, although I never saw the combination myself, I learned that because of actually wrong settings I could do (like in 0.9x-5 actually happened) the PC is confused until a reboot. So, please reboot the PC (if you did not already), and try again. Do not run 0.9x-5 anymore, because it will destroy again.

Does that help ?

If not, I currently have no further ideas. :scratching:
Btw, it works at Unattended only, but I guess you know that.

Peter

Peter,
after finishing playing XXHE 0.9x-5b, the Windows Desktop is not returned to the original setup (looks like the same kind of problem as in 0.9x-5, not being fully fixed in 0.9x-5b).
I have to manually bring up the services again using XXHE Settings. This works fine, but IMHO should be done automatically.
If this is a known bug to you, I apologise for reporting it again.

BTW, I am totally in awe re. SQ. My reference tracks sound like heaven. Please don`t change that anymore !!!!!!!

Cheers, Eric.

Do you mean the "Services" button doesn't do its job ?

Peter,
the Services button works fine, no problem there.

However, after completing playing an album. I exit XXHE. Now the Services are not automatically restored by XXHE. So, I do have to start XXHE again to use the Services button. Or, I have to use the Services button before I leave XXHE. In any case, it requires a manual action. I would expect XXHE to automatically bring up Services and return to the "normal" Vista desktop when I exit XXHE.

Note: I play unattended with wallpaper switched on. Important: I did not start AutoHotkey before I start playing, because I have no intention to interrupt the play.
When I do start AutoHotkey and I use Alt-x to interrupt and stop XXHE, the problem does not occur!!
Hope this helps,
Eric

Ah, ok. I know this problem is there, and this was at least one reason to put in that safety button.
I think I have currently solved it (for the next version), but it requires more testing to be sure. Btw, stopping playback with Alt-S (at Unattended) would incur for the problem also.

And no, the Services button is not needed in advance of playback. Note though (and this is the wacky think) that when playback starts, the current state of the services is saved, and it is restored to that state when XX is brough up again. Thus, once the services don't run (like in the situation you described) and you start playback, that not-running state is saved, and at a next normal bring up (like with Alt-X) will not run the services.

All would be 100% waterproof if I'd be allowed to always start the services when playback is not going on.
Which I probably will do ...
Or as I told earlier, make a setting checkbox per service (there will be more in the future).
