Title: 64 bit Version of XXHighEnd?
Post by: michaeljeger on February 11, 2015, 10:01:24 am
Hi Peter

Are you also considering/working on bringing the software to 64bit?

There might be an advantage for future compatability?
Adressing more memory?

The reason I ask this is that when opening the TaskManager, XXHighEnd is one of the few remaining non 64 bit processes running.

Thanks, Michael

Michael,

At this moment this is not possible. Or let's say that the time required for this is unjustified.
But it also is not necessary. So while a 2GB of memory limit exists, there's nothing in there that can utilize memory beyond it. Theoretically the SFS (Split File Size) can incur for it but practially not for other - convenience reasons. So the practical limit is 570 (theoretical is just over 600).
In addition, and knowing that this can only be about the SFS, it has been quite long ago (like 2.5 years or so) that we were on the track of "large SFS sounds better".

So there is really no reason, although your mentioned future compatibility is always a good one. But by that time ...

Thanks,
Peter

Ha!!

I was hoping it is a matter of "running it through 64 bit compiler".... but I guess not.

Would you think sonically it could make a difference since you would send 64 bit code to 64 processor, basically making it more efficient?

Or are we talking about metaphysics here?  :teasing:
Like the damping stuff.... hehe....  :innocent:

Cheers, Michael

Yes, it most probably will make a difference. But don't ask me in which direction. :swoon:

Peter
