Title: Request to provide Shut Down option
Post by: Eric on January 01, 2012, 12:31:15 pm
Hello Peter!
We wish you and your family a happy and musical 2012!!
Many, many, many good things happened in the year 2011. Both on the SW as well as the HW side. We are all looking forward to many nice developments again in 2012.
I like to kick-off with a (simple?) request.
The Minimize OS button supports an immediate reboot. It works well and it really is one of the bigger 2011 improvements. Now could you please provide an optional Shut Down (postponing the Minimize OS reboot), instead of a reboot right away? In many cases, after working in Normal OS mode, I like to start up in Minimal OS mode at a later point in time.  So providing this option would come in very handy.
Thanks and cheers,
Eric & Michaela

Best wishes for 2012 for you both too Eric !

Ok, let me first say that this most 100% likely won't happen. Technially it could though ...

But what I wonder first is what ever could be your reasons or benefit to operate it like you suggest it ? I'd say : if you want it engaged at a later point in time, use the button later.

But I guess that is a too simple approach, right ?

Peter

Peter,
on of the the reasons is that I am enjoying several audio/video sources. I play music through spotify, I look at YuoTube, explore new music on the internet etcetera. Doing this, I use the FireFace Audio interface. Of course I can also play this over the NOS1-DAC, but I need to set adjustments in the NOS1 Driver Controlpanel as well as the Windows standard Audio device. And this requires e.g. the Windows Audio Service to be running. And I do not prefer to Keep this service running when in Minimum OS mode.

If it is technically not a big deal, why not implement the Shut Down option? You must have you reason not to support it and I am curious what reason you have to not support the choice to Shut Down or Restart (the latter could be the default)?

Cheers,
Eric

Reaons are :secret: and I still don't understand yours !

What you explained is how you can't conveniently use the NOS1 at all times; I understand that. But I don't see you explaining why you can't use the MinimizeOS button right before the play ... :) :)

Peter,
the reason that you don't see me explaining it is because there is none!
It is for convenience only that I like to arrive in Minimum OS mode when I start up my PC. Also in case I was using Normal OS mode in the previous session. Is your advise to switch to Minimize OS right before the play (for some reason)?

Cheers, Eric

Ok, that is "clear" then. You just like to put me to work eh ? haha.

But no. What happens is that the lot gets inconsistent (hence unstable in theory) when the preparations are performed for the upcoming reboot. Now, we'd think these preparations can be postponed, but this is really not easy; just think about XXHighEnd needing to do it really, while that may not - or will not be running. It can be done, but *now* it may interfere with other things. Think of something you suddenly installed in the mean time, *that* needing a reboot within itself (as often is the case), that expecting a normal situation (think about installers not working anymore with MinimedOS !!) etc. etc.

So see ? I must do some heavy work of which I don't even see how yet, while you have no reason for it. Man, we better spend our time with other preparations : opening bottles just in case.

Agreed ?

Peter,
that makes a lot of sense.
So I drop my requirement. Thanks for the explanation.

Cheers
