Title: Dead in the water...
Post by: PaulF70 on May 09, 2016, 01:07:31 am
Suddenly XX is unable to play anymore at all.  I'm running the latest version on a Phasure PC I just got into a NOS1A.  Everything had been working fine since I first setup the PC last week.

I went into settings to enable tool tips (thanks).  I loaded an album, hit play, then got a sequence of three error dialogs:

"INVALIDARG"

"4|16..." (more numbers)

"DEVICE CANNOT PLAY"

I rebooted - same thing.

I reset the home folder and reloaded the album (one I've played many times on XX in the past few days).  Same thing.

I pulled & re-inserted the USB cable to the DAC - same thing.

I cycled power on the DAC - same thing.

I then rebooted again (this is 586 RAM, which I've been using since the beginning) - same thing.  Same three errors every time I try to play any track.

I'm really at a complete loss right now.

Hi Paul,

Peter is probably sleeping at this time, but I will suggest you to do a few things just to be sure that the settings are right for the NOS1a...

First, can you check what the Phasure driver is showing ? I don't know howto call it, maybe the Phasure control panel that indicates the current streaming status (at the bottom right of the screen there should be a small yellow "W") ?

Alain

Nope, no W t the bottom right, yellow or otherwise.  I do not see a "W" anywhere in the UI.  Nor have I changed the driver (ever).

In Settings, the DAC as shown as a Phasure NOS1 - and there is no way to change that (nor should I want to).

Thanks for trying to help.

Unfortunately in the morning I am off to NY for biz all week so probably will not get it working again till next weekend (I should say I hope I will).

Hi Paul,

Ok, then are you using a Custom filter ?

Hi Paul,

No - it is set to Arc Prediction as it has been.

Is it only when you press "Play" that this message occurs ?

Here are some of my settings. The small window shows the Phasure Audio USB control panel...

Thank you so much.  What happened was my Output Device got changed.  I could not figure out how - it was not on purpose - then I noticed that when you use the scroll wheel to scroll up & down in the settings, ** if you pass over a dropdown it scrolls that ** instead of the window contents.

And thus does turning on tooltips break your playback.  Lesson learned.

Tonight my wife picked XX/The NOS1A over my $11K vinyl setup (with a snazzy new $5K phono stage) playing acoustic jazz 45s vs. the commercial *redbook* version on the DAC, blind.

She's always preferred vinyl.  Always.  Just like me.

This setup is amazing.

Maybe your vinyl has worn out ?
:)

Peter

PS: Thank you for your help, Alain.

Gosh I had a 20k vinyl setup 15 years ago and my best CD setup beat it $10k then my 5k laptop computer audio beat that, now gosh beyond master tape(the old reel to reel tape).

BUT a chronic shortage of good recordings still prevails in any format.

Please tell me what that digital setup was 15 years ago; I am curious.  Are you speaking of the same thing I was - acoustic music recorded in analog?

Meridian 200 CD transport(upgraded clocking), Illuminati BNC interconnect and Benchmark DAC 1(Upgraded power supply and output chips). I mainly listened to blues rock(anything from Hendrix to Jeff Beck), now jazz fusion, nu jazz, electronic, drum and bass and even dub step.

I had the Benchmark long ago and found it nowhere near good analog; in terms of naturalness it was not close to even any mid-level vinyl setup (though obviously it would "beat" it at the frequency extremes; etc.).  To each his own.

Well I was a drummer in a former life and vinyl/CD never matched my real drums and cymbals.

In fact I can only say that I have got a lot closer with Computer Audio and recently with Peter's Ram OS xxhighend, cymbals and snare drum in particular have come to life.

I can't imagine an even better sound if I had the NOS Dac which is about to be improved even more!!!

I hit the Village Vanguard in NYC two nights ago for Steve Coleman (absolutely amazing show) and am happy to report no major "disconnect" upon returning home and listening to the system tonight.

For me, the XX/NOS1A combo is the first digital that has eliminated all traces of digititus.  It just isn't there.  This is a huge achievement.

I may dismantle the turntable this weekend, actually, so I can fit the Phasure PC on my rack.
