Was browsing the web for i2s, spdif, usb and transformations amongst them while I accidentally found out the following on http://www.zerooneaudio.com/faqs.htm:

Can someone comment on this? I did read SPDIF standard, but could not find anything of the sort there. Maybe I have missed something???

24 bits/96kHz via S/PDIF is the limit of the S/PDIF standard -->> I think this is BS, SPDIF standard can do 24/192 too,
the TI48 however maybe not

Both SPDIF and i2s have no limits that I'm aware of. It will be the quality of the cabling and all that state the limits.
Of course you are dealing with (receiver) chips and their processing capacity or "something" in the chain which just wasn't made for the higher speed. On that matter things just change throughout the years ...
