Hi Jack, thanks.
But do you say that without double/upsampling you do have sound ? (#3)
15557  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: XXHighEnd-08a - feedback on: June 19, 2007, 09:34:26 pm
So far you are the first to respond, so I can't tell really.

I must say honestly though that I couldn't test it u/i playing, because the laptop I now use for testing fails earlier, but then with an error message.
Otoh, you have the Fireface, and that just should be working (but again, not tested with that laptop, because I just can't -> no Firewire connection).

Then, did you look at the Fireface Mixer (various settings) in order to see something move there ?
Remember, you can be just right, because I didn't hear back from anyone as off yet ...
Btw, if Engine#2 plays, I think you selected the appropriate Fireface "mix". Hmm ...
15558  Ultimate Audio Playback / Download Area and Release Notes / XXHighEnd Model 0.8a (with Engine #3) on: June 19, 2007, 07:37:42 pm
Okay, retrial ...

See the releasenotes here : http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=69.0

Additionally about Engine #3 :

I found that not all Device Drivers support Exclusive Mode. Appropriate messages are built in for this.
Besides that, I also found that Devices (or their drivers) do not support the needed Sample Rate. For instance, the device could support 48K only, which is not suitable for 44K1 playback without resampling (which Engine#3 a.o. was made for). It should switch to "Shared mode" and address the resampling engine from Vista, but so far I didn't manage to get it to that (it might be a Vista bug).

Please carefully quote the messages you may receive when you have problems.

Again, good luck !

Sidenote : Leo, parallel to your last post, I split the topic (to http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=72.0 ).

Yes, it might look confusing. But if you dive into what they sell (like this list at the bottom here : http://www.linnrecords.com/linn-downloads-what.aspx ) you see that they just sell 88K2 as well. The post from Klaus I just moved (see above) explains it I think.
Also note that SACD would be about 96K, whereas CD is about 44K1. Thus, for good quality and with the CD in mind, they recorded at 88K2 (just allowing simple division by two (yes, including dithering)).

15560  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Linn Records 24/96 master material - how they process on: June 19, 2007, 11:51:19 am
Thanks Klaus.

Just to note : Dithering is always at order at DOWNsampling. Note that when you go from 44K1 to 48K, this also implies downsampling ! (from the common denominator back to 48K).
So it is not needed (wanted !) when going from e.g. 44K1 to 88K2.

Hmm ... that XX won't play them was already known, although I already forgot about it ( http://forum.bd-design.nl/board_entry.php?id=14043 ).

As far as I have seen, it may be so that #1 and #2 will never be able to do it, because it should work and it does not (thus, out of my control). I am sure though that #3 will do it, BUT, that most probably needs my attention in a few areas.

As you know I am currently working on #3 itself, and right after it's working at "your" places I must make availbe an unrestricted version.  Happy
So there's some priorities. yes

Yeah ... but not all that long when you deliberately leave the power cord behind because you have enough at home ... which I don't because it's a special one as it turns out now ...  fool

So I'm kind of running against the clock with a draining battery ...
... I got rid of the error message, but no sound yet.

I guess it will be tomorrow night the earliest. sorry
15563  Ultimate Audio Playback / Interesting Music / Testmaterial / Re: Linn Records 24/96 master material available for download on: June 18, 2007, 07:20:54 pm
Now I need to find the best converter for doing the job.

Hahaha, so now I need to DOWNsample as well ... never thought of that ...

Note though that Vista will do it for you when you tell the device it can do 48K 16bit only ... (but I don't know about the quality).
Supposed #3 is running at some time ... now do NOT use that, because it just will avoid the Vista DOWNsampling ...  prankster

There is a good chance that the offered 24/96 master-quality-material will lift audio quality further up!

You say it with some ease ... to my understanding these are REAL masters, hence the digital files used to burn the CDs (wrong, SACDs). So this is very important I think.

A bit of a pity is that my DAC doesn't do 24 bits (nor yours I think Happy). Okay, more or less "decent" converting to 16 bits is possible of course but it would be such a pity ...

IMHO this should be better than SACD (where the masters were made for, as they explained themselves).

Nice find !

Thank you Bert.

I realized that we have an unused Vista laptop at work, so I'll bring that home tonight.
I should be self-supporting then ...  Happy
15566  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Sound changed from version f to i on: June 18, 2007, 12:53:15 am
This is very good information Adrian; Often I think I hear differences, but when it is confirmed by others ...

For me it, currently, it is very difficult anyway, because I'm more busy with the technical stuff than listening lately.

Thank you !

Also I'd like to know this :

One of the files in the latest zip is this one : XXEngine3.exe.intermediate.manifest
If you delete that (but keep it somewhere else) ... does that change anything ?

Thanks again.

And do you have both these checkboxes ticked for your sounddevice ?
(I didn't mention that before ...)

(and is that device your Primary Device ?)
15569  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: XXEngine3.exe on: June 18, 2007, 12:01:43 am
Thanks ...

Can you verify by Taskmanager that XXEngine3.exe is running after you pressed Play (for a track) in XXHighEnd ?

Btw, do NOT use tracks with  diacretical marks ! ... because then you wouldn't have sound indeed (in the current version).
15570  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Its very good on: June 17, 2007, 11:45:02 pm
Sorry to be such a nuisance. unhappy

Oh, you're not. If *I* only knew how to help here. And you shouldn't do it on your own either ...

The fact that the dropouts increase at a higher samplerate -as you described it-  says enough I think. Do note that the upsampling comes right after XX and is done by the OS. Well, in your Vista case of course.

I'm not sure what to do with it (because it should be the drivers) ... but can you perhaps recognize that the dropouts occur each time at the exact same place (in a track) ? Again, dunno what to do whith it, but who knows something shedds a light ...

nothing on the device manager is actually called a motherboard!

No ... this is about the various chips which  are on the mobo, and *they* need upgrading. But I really never done it.
Chances are high that #3 goes around your issue, but then first #3 has got to work at your systems.  Happy Note though that XX itself (which would be the case then) doesn't go higher than 88K2.

Just don't give up. Today I suddenly found solutions (C++) for things which I couldn't find for 4 months ...  yes
