Title: I2S Bridge between PC and DAC
Post by: AlainGr on April 29, 2014, 12:02:49 pm
I saw this on Computer Audiophile: http://pinkfaun.nl/portal/productaanbod/dac-streaming-audio/1440-i2s-bridge

Seems interesting, apart from the HDMI interface...

Reads like nice BS to me (the way it's put I mean).
Solves nothing that I can see, can't connect to anything and will imply the highest jitter.
Wrong idea.

Hi Peter,

What a way to talk about your compatriot ;) Do you mean because of the HDMI connection, because an I2S needs a shorter path (or for the 2 reasons) ?

Hi Alain,

Compatriot, co-patriot, concullegue as we say over here, it doesn't matter. Someone who comes up with something like this just doesn't understand much of it. And otherwise I myself don't. 8)

i2s is not made for long lengths hence isn't made for an "interface" like this. The protocol is for internal usage like a few cm max.
Also mind what the guy says "The end of de USB discussion: I2S bridge". So this already tells enough if you only understand that now
a. the clock is at the PC's end again;
b. and behind that is this crazy length of i2s.
This, while we all try to get the clock at the DAC's end without interference from the PC (which is about this far away clock). Anynch USB that is.

Of course Asynch USB also has its downsides (with me as a first to tell about that) but that doesn't mean it can be solved like this.

HDMI connection ? just one means to implement an i2s connection. Just wires. Why put like this by me ? because no standard exists for it (obviously - because it should not exist).
Of course at the other (DAC) end no HDMI connector is there ever, but no worries "it can be build in almost everey DAC".
Yeah, sure.

The first NOS1 was based upon this but now with 10cm of i2s. Of course in advance of that I tried it the normal way with IIRC 80cm. It works all right with this 80cm and some care, but that is about all.

And now it tells something about their DACs too (never heard one) ...

Regards,
Peter

PS: And any other opinion for mine.

Thanks Peter.

Still I wonder if you have been able to implement something that would defeat one of the 2 clocks through the USB channel ? Or maybe I misunderstood this...

Regards,

Alain

No Alain, that failed. But for *me* that failed for not-so-normal reasons. Let's say I tried to over-do it.
But might Coen read this ... I wonder what happened to his endeavors in this regard. But this belongs in another topic ...

Nothing more than plans here and I don't feel the urge to experiment with stuff now.

maybe later ;).

<close off topic>

Thank you Coen. All OK with that.
(I am no different)
