Thanks for the link Nick. $2500 and $6000 for their S1 and S2 ATX linear supplies (in the US) respectively seems a little steep. But I've contacted Mark at Item Audio in any case to ask for more info.

Cheers, Mani.

Yep, forget dying. The best way to overcome grey hair is to simply shave it all off. Shame it doesn't work with wrinkles...

Ah well, I use a Seasonic X-460FL in Le Monster. It's an older design but had the lowest noise/ripple figures when I bought it a couple of years ago. So maybe that explains why there seemed nothing obviously wrong when Paul was here.

I actually have two X-460FLs installed in Le Monster. The initial idea was to have one just powering the mobo and the other powering all the ancillaries. This idea seemed to work OK. However, a year or so ago I thought that maybe having two SMPSs is a bad idea - both interfering with each other and sending even more cr*p back into the mains than a single one. So I unplugged one - it's still in the case doing nothing. Maybe I'll try it again...

But I will try my other two PCs in my main system. I'm particularly interested in hearing how a system with really ZERO SMPSs sounds.

The real surprise of the day is that with my PC in Nick's system the SQ is transformed - and I do mean transformed...

... Mani - you have the same PC as Nick don't you? But I have to say I did not get the impression that your PC was holding back the performance of your system Mani when I heard it.

Yep, I think we use the same mobo and cooling system. I've also applied all of 'Nick's Tweaks', all of which seem to work very, very well IMO. My CPU is different though, so too other things like the power supply.

But I have a couple of other PCs here with XX loaded ready to go... and a couple of days coming up without wife/kids around. I'll endeavour to compare the following PCs in my main system against my current 'Le Monster':

1. The music PC in my office
- totally fanless design with Zalman TNN300 case
- ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M mobo
- i7-3770K CPU
- 16GB PC3-19200 memory
- single SSD with Win8/XX
- LAN 'on' with music 'streamed' from NAS before playing

2. The PC I use in my basement studio for capturing from the ADC via a Weiss AFI1
- totally fanless design with OrigenAE M10 case
- Jetway NF96FL-525 dual-core Atom mobo
- 4GB DDR2 800 memory
- single SSD with Win8/XX/music
- *Paul Hynes 12v linear PS*

Will report back (maybe under a new thread)...

First finding - How to encode an audio signal in an I2S data stream.

Nick, most of your technical description is beyond my current level of understanding, but your findings seem totally 'crazy', 'amazing', 'revolutionary'... I'm not sure what the most appropriate term is!

Peter, do you think you can use these findings to further improve the NOS1 in general, even for those of us who are experiencing nothing like Nick is? (BTW, I get nothing whatsoever coming through at -144dB and the NOS1 switch #2 set to off.)

 OffTopic

If you are in the New York-Philadelphia area, please let me know.

Nothing against Houston, but I'd much rather be in the North East. Unfortunately I'm rarely there...

And likewise, if ever you find yourself in the UK, more specifically in Shakespeare's neck of the woods, do let me know. Would be good to meet up in person.

Thinking about it, I reckon we should organize an XX meet every couple of years or so. The venue would have to meet the following criteria:
- large international airport reasonably close by
- great hifi system
- lots of room in which to mull around
- access to good food & drink
- ???

Oh and a view over a lake or something would be really nice. Hmm... anywhere spring to mind?

You are never at home man. Think about a discman or something...

Yep, greetings from Houston! Unfortunately I have to go where my clients ask me to go. You know, having a zillion air miles and a Gold card nowhere near makes up for the time lost at home with my family... and of course listening to great music in the evening.

Knowing that I 'need' my music, last Christmas my wife bought me a Dragonfly DAC for my travels. I loaded XX onto my laptop and was getting a really nice sound coming out of my headphones. I mean really nice. But I have Windows Update set to auto on my work laptop and after one of the updates in Feb/Mar, XX stopped working with the Dragonfly. I just haven't had a chance to look into things again since then.

OT:

I'm not sure why but I tend to think a lot about my music system and what I want to do with it when I'm sitting waiting in an airport lounge. My latest thinking tends towards getting rid of the last SMPS in the system - the PC supply. It's already fed from its own dedicated 5KVA balanced transformer, but I'm aware that it must still be injecting a load of cr*p into the PE, some of which I'm sure finds it's way into the electronics. For now, the only solution seems to be a low-powered PC running off a linear supply. But this is simply a no-no with XX. Oh well, I suppose I should stop thinking and just wait for Peter to come up with a solution in time. Somehow I think he will...

Cheers, Mani.

I had to smile yesterday evening.

Nice story Nick.

The cheapest upgrade for me arrives most winters. The SQ seems to go up whenever there is a thick layer of snow on the ground. I'm not sure exactly why this would be. It could simply be the deadening affect the snow has on background noise or maybe even some sort of damping affect it has on the HV electrical cables outside. Who knows...

It's a shame though isn't it that there are so many factors that are simply out of our control. I strongly suspect mobile phone signals, wifi routers and even DECT phones all affect SQ negatively.

Hey Paul, before you experience Peter's wrath, this is a known issue and Peter has stated it on many occasions... perhaps even in the 0.9z-9b release notes.

I think for now using W8 with the W7 Shell means no coverart.

Hi Alain, it wasn't the case with W7 but does indeed seem to be the case with W8:

Then at this screen...
http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f11/1713d1316128030-dual-boot-installation-windows-8-windows-7-vista-w7-3.jpg

... I select "Drive options (advanced)" and I delete all the partitions (I don't have the link to show this), then come back to the previous screen and let W8 do its work. The installation process will create whatever partitions it needs and install itself.

Yep, this is exactly what I did - deleted existing partitions and then formated the drive before creating a new 100GB partition for W8.

I know though, that obtaining a non-upgrade version isn't even easy. Otoh, upgrade versions can be installed as fresh. It won't be official...

Wouldn't buying an OEM version be OK? Apparently, you can now transfer the license between mobos - very useful for most of us here.

988  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Windows 8 and 09-z9, a match made in heaven? on: June 14, 2013, 02:04:54 pm
Yesterday, my wife was out at work and both the kids at nursery so I decided to bite the bullet and get W8 sorted out again on 'Le Monster', the music PC for my main listening room. I had installed W8 on this machine back at the beginning of February but couldn't live with the over-emphasized sound. I kept the HDD untouched but it seems that unplugging it from the SATAIII socket whilst in Minimize OS mode and with the Win7 shell somehow corrupted Win8. In any event, I had to resort to formatting the HDD and a totally new Win8 install. Most of it went pretty smoothly, but I then had major issues with privileges.

I've had W8 installed on the music PC in my office/study since the end of January and have, until recently, simply ignored the over-emphasized sound - OK for background music as I work. It's worked faultlessly and I've never had any privileges issues. There's only one user set up, set to Administrator by default. But with my install on Le Monster, I just couldn't get a single user account to work. After quite a while trying, I resorted to setting up another account, set to Administrator. This required going back and forth between the Win7 shell and Metro, and having to uninstall/reinstall the Win7 shell - I had to do this several times as I'm sure I made loads of mistakes along the way. But eventually everything worked. Phew!

Is Windows 8 and the new version of XXHighEnd (09-z9) the best combination so far between the OS and XXHighEnd?. The answer is, in my opinion YES.

I agree 100%. 0.9z-9b on W8 is a quantum step up in SQ compared to 0.9z-9b on W7. The latter is very, very good - probably the best sound I had achieved before yesterday. (I still have it on another HDD and will go back and take a listen at some point). But the 0.9z-9b/W8 combo is in another league... IMHO.

Quote
The main differences in SQ I detected with respect to other combinations of OS/XXHE are:

- Detail. The sound is the most detailed I've heard. I used, as always, a few albums I've listened literally hundreds of times. I have discovered new sounds that were hidden and it was an unbelievable surprise. Never before, in any case, I had heard certain sounds that are now perfectly audible.

Agree 100%. But this is 'real, full spectrum' detail, and not fake HF detail. There are no edges to the sound anymore, etching out and separating instruments. The sound is whole, and yet exquisitely textured.

Quote
- Density. The sound is dense and I wish I could explain, dense as I mean is not equal to thick, but a fuller sound with more information, I could define it, for lack of better words, like a more mature sound, more complete.

Agree 100%. This is like the 'whole' that I was talking about above.

Quote
- Bass. The bass deserves a special comment. At first it seems too large, even a little fuzzy, but if you get used to it youŽll be hearing a bass that seems to be more faithful to the recording than previously. That is, if the bass is exaggerated it appears so, however in well made recordings the bass appears with an almost perfect intonation and depth. In my opinion, if the bass has the right size and it is correctly reproduced, as it is the case in the 09-z9 version, it becomes an essential factor to give the sound that density to which I referred.

Agree 100%. The bass is just right. Switching PA on seems to destroy the fullness a bit too much.

Quote
- Palpability. The combination of the three previous sections gives the sound a palpability even greater than at other times. It seems as if the sound had a physical embodiment, as if it could be touched.

Agree 100%. I've just been listening to a whole bunch of female singers - glad the wife's not here Wink

Quote
- Volume. With regard to the volume level I'm not sure if in other versions it is as important as it is now. I think that the richness of the sound is volume level dependent, and I guess that it will happen in each system (including the listening room), in my case with the 09-z9 version the better setting is -33db/-31.5db, that's the equivalent to 30db/-28.5db when PeakExtend was active in the other versions which is the volume that was using before most of the time.

I'm in two minds here. On the one hand the sound is phenomenal even at low volumes. On the other hand, I find myself wanting more.

Quote
The combination of all what I have said here makes a sound that IMHO is the best so far. I guess that to the extent that Peter will delve into Windows 8 will appear better XXHE versions, which,  although it seems difficult, we all know from experience that it is possible.

I have no idea where we go from here. Peter has tamed the beast that is W8. Actually, he's gone even further than that. In my office system, I keep the LAN connected in order to use remote desktop (I use my work PC to control the music PC, which is just perfect for me) and to stream files across from a NAS drive in my basement, keeping the office/study free of whining HDDs and totally silent (an absolute must for me). I haven't done a lot of playing around with XX settings, but am certain that Q5 is helping to minimize any negative effects of keeping the LAN on. The sound in my office/study is simply superb (music PC -> NOS1 -> Sanders Magtech amp -> Celestion SL600 speakers... all fed off a balanced AC transformer).

I'd encourage those of you still on W7 to take the plunge. W8 is the way forward... IMHO.

Thanks for everything Peter.

Now *that* will be the day !

I guess I have to believe you, but it is difficult. Happy

Well, it never happened to me before. I was shocked that I was getting such little output at a regular volume control setting and was going to post something about it. But after the activation, everything was OK, so I didn't bother.

And Mani, I suppose this is unrelated to the Needs 24 bit setting ?

Yep, totally unrelated.
