Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Device not supported
|
on: January 12, 2014, 12:41:34 pm

A minor problem that I notice since 1.186a is that after rebooting (sometimes) and now once after punching alt n while playing an album allready for a couple of tracks, I get the message that the device can not play, format not supported and some other messages. When I check the settings the device has changed from KS Phasure to Headphone. When I change the device back to KS Phasure it behaves normally again. Just hickups of W8 or something else ?
regards, Leo

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Minimise OS with 1.186
|
on: January 07, 2014, 01:08:59 pm

Hello Peter, After first going back to normal OS with the 0.9 version I installed 1.186 (not 'a' version at that moment). I copied the . dat áctivation' file into the new folder. If I recall correctly the letters on top of the screen turned to red (I am not 100% sure about this but I think they were red) and I could set all parameters as I normally can with an activated XX. However when I tried to minimise OS I got the message cannot minimize , you should contact Phasure. Instead I tried to minimise the OS with the existing .9 version which succeeded. Starting up 1.186a I got the message 'something wrong with OS, present status of minimise button reflects actual situation' (or some wording like that). The button indicated mimised OS, red line in button. However the red letters on top of the screen indicating activation were gone. I can select all parameters like an activated system but it will stop playing after a while as with unactivated. Sorry for not acting on the first warning message but I guess I was too curious about the new steps in SQ. What could be my next steps now? A new activation code? Or should first be clear why minimising OS does not work with my new 1.186(a) ? Leo

Just in time before Peter probably will replace the Dexa clocks with a new Q parameter , I would like to tell about my experience with implementing these superdanes. With the online help of Nick (thanks!!!) I got them in quickly and what to say. The sound is just so pure and wonderfull and it is almost impossible to leave the room for the rest of my tasks and duties and pleasures (you just never know when she is reading this stuff...). I also played around with the settings that Nick suggested which seem to work in the same direction (but I have been up placebo-creek before...). And whether this is related or not I can now play with the SFS of 0,8 which gave massive hickups in the sounds and large amounds of errors in the XX control panel. This SFS change I tried after the first two days of Dexa glory. And this also moved the SQ further in this same natural, real, exciting direction. Maybe the lower speed of RAM (800) I had before in my previous settings is a factor in this SFS thing as well. Allthough expensive and with the risk that Peter will get the same step, no jump, in quality with a future release of XXHighend in the near future I am enjoying the great sound I am having today enormously. Onwards and upwards, what a great journey! Leo

Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: My definition of Ambience

I think similar things happen when you tune a bass guitar for instance. When the two strings (one open , one 5th fret) are not exactly in tune you get a very low frequency of the difference. In former days bassplayers held the flame of a lighter in front of the speaker when tuning. If not in tune the flame would wobble with this very low frequency and you turned the peg untill the flame stood still....

Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Orelino's back home from x fi 2013

Having heard speakers made by Bert Doppenberg for many many years, having built earlier versions of his horn based speakers, having listened to the very special wide range Feastrex speakers at his place I have always found his designs very good. With his drivers, designs and great support any inclination for moving away from the diy road to the holy audio grail was easily suppressed. On his site the discussion about computer audio and XX highend with Peter in a more and more dominant role started and this rsulted in XX highend and the NOS1. Not diy the last one but what a great piece of equipment. And now with the new oscillators in place by my own hands it is in a very tiny way a diy project (no need Peter to comment on this and take this little bit of pride away!). I did not hear the big Orelo's but was very curious to hear the Orelino's so the visit of xfi was mandatory. There I found Bert and Peter rather sad and depressed by the terrible room acoustics. However even there I found a lightness and unforced air with the Orelino's which I thought was not found in other demo's in Veldhoven. Yesterday I got the opportunity or rather privilege to hear the Orelino's in a proper room, in Ciska's and Peters home in Oene. I have listened with great pleasure in that room to the previous design of Bert when picking up my Nos1 but I really think the Orelino's, integrating the efforts of Bert and Peter, are a big big step forward. Everything I heard , from Ray Brown to Black Sabbath and even the special synthesizer music that Peter probably likes because most audio equipment cannot handle it and probably hates it, was presented in an effortless way as if every instrument had it's own dedicated high quality monitor. Timing details of music I've known for 40 years were shown so clear, the sounds of acoustic bass strings from first plucking to release of the strings presented so natural and real. It was really great, and for the first time in my life, after making my own speakers for almost 45 years, I am considering of buying ready made speakers instead of building them myself. If only my pockets were a bit deeper....

Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: Oscillator upgrade

After three failed attempts to send the new oscillators by Dutch mail (there are some very keen audiophiles among the dutch postmen) I finally got hold of them by visiting the x Fi fair in Veldhoven and receiving them in a nicely wrapped package personally from Ciska and Peter. Starting with the extensive but also slightly intimidating instructions I went ahead. Allthough I managed to get one of the legs unsoldered from the first oscillator (pff, just keep up normal breathing here, oi oi oi, stay calm , don't grab an axe and destroy the tiny enemy) I got everything installed and sorted out. 55 minutes from start to finish. And presto no fifo errors and even better sound.

Hello Peter, could you send me the instructions for a diy upgrade. Depending on selfconfidence, heat, Tour de France and other factors I will after reading decide to either try it myself or make an appointment to visit the home of the NOS1 Dac once more Leo
