31  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: OS preference for Music Server on: February 14, 2016, 08:32:42 pm
Hi Peter,
Your explanation helps a lot.
Are you thinking that in the future that the music PC will prepare (i.e. apply filtering, etc) wav files and then the audio PC essentially just streams music to the DAC.  The user interface and the preparation is on the music PC.  In doing this perhaps the requirements for the audio computer CPU becomes less and a lower wattage can be used, hence improved sound quality.  Maybe a core M chip, 4.5 watts...

Thanks, Dave

I must be missing something with the quote below - I thought XXHE has to be on the audio server and the music server contains your music files.  The audio server has a network drive setup pointing to a music server directory.  This info is from Peter's posting http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3211.msg34887#msg34887
Is there a tutorial on setting up the XXHE on the music server and is it then on the audio server as well?

I've decided that I will go all-out with Roon and Tidal on the music server too... along with XXHE to load tracks ready to be played on the audio-PC

Ramesh,
By coincidence I have the Linkwitz Orions.  I have friend who lives in Oakland who heard the Orelo MK II's in LA.  He is actually looking for speakers and hasn't pulled the trigger yet.  If you are interested I can put him in contact with you as I know he would be interested in hearing the LX521 and would share his experience in hearing the Orelo's.  Just a thought.
Cheers,
Dave

Todd,

Have you tried the Regen with the Intona yet, if so, any impressions.  I ordered the Intona today.

Cheers,
Dave

I'll tell you what though, I'll put it in this weekend and report back, but I'm quite confident that it will detract from the performance and not add to it. What the hell though, I have both might as well try it and report what it does in my system and let you extrapolate from there.

Hi Todd,
Thanks for the report on the Intona.  Does the Regen improve the sound with the Intona or is it not needed anymore?
thanks,
dave

Dan,
Picture is great,  Many thanks!
Todd,
Did you have Uptone do the upgrades or did you do them?  Did you hear the regen before and after and if so how much difference does the Neutron make?

I'm also considering getting the Linear PS JS-2.  I could use that to power a regen and my laptop which connects to the NOS1a.  Any opinions on whether a LPS connected to a laptop would make any difference in the sound quality.

Many thanks to all,
Dave

Daniel,
A couple of questions -
If the regen is the NOS1a, how do you connect the power cord to it?  How come you didn't connect on the outside of the NOS1a?  What USB cable are you using?
I'd be interested in seeing pictures if possible.
thanks,
dave

Yes, I was referring to the one you had on behalf of a customer.  I believe your ultimate conclusion was that it was beneficial to the sound quality.
It sounds like you are working on a full linear power supply.  Really looking forward to hearing more about that when it becomes 'visible'.  I'm just waiting for that piece to become part of the Chronos!

Cheers,
Dave

can you get the PC with the modded ATX LPSU and Silverstone USB card for the best sound quality?  Have I forgotten anything?   Happy Happy
40  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Windows 10 build 10074 expiration on: September 09, 2015, 02:04:54 am
Well Peter, you could just do away with Windows altogether and design your own dedicated, integrated Xxhighend and OS audio playback package with a NOS add on for those who need it.
"

More and more companies are doing this.  'Geek Wave',  is a company doing this.  They have raised over a million dollars from crowd funding.  Some of the people who are working on this worked on the high-end DAC DaVinci.

Of course the next step after the integrated OS and player is the using Rasberry Pi.

oh and i have the 1.186a version.
42  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / fx button on: July 29, 2015, 04:13:29 am
I can't find the fx button.  I've seen screenshots of it being to the right of the volume slider with many other buttons - i don't have norm vol, linear, etc buttons - all I have is the slider.  I have been clicking around for a half hour now and no luck.
Any help appreciated.  I got some hi-rez stuff and believe I need to click on the fx button to hear it, if I could find it
My apologies for being dense.
thanks,
dave

Hi Peter -
Thanks!
Although changing the date backwards would solve the expiration problem, who knows what other problems it may cause.  Very hard to predict with people using different hardware, different environment and doing slightly different things.  I guess we'll know after 10/10/15 ;-)

The difference is that external factors now first imply the "no writes" (because we're in RAM) and that now provisions must be found/created to apply those changes after all. Just for convenience.

We maybe passing each other - agreed, by having the OS in RAM you have no writes unless other provisions are made.  So if I change settings in the Windows 10 for networking (e.g. set a static network address) how do they get saved when the OS is in RAM, hence no writes?

Also, you'll notice the link Jud sent has Windows 10 build 10074 is set to stop booting on 10/10/15.  Perhaps by changing the BIOS date, this can be verified...
45  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / Re: XXHighEnd PC with Windows 10 from RAM on: July 26, 2015, 11:16:35 pm
I found I can connect a NAS directly to a computer using static IP addresses.  My question is if the OS is always loaded into RAM how do I make configuration changes in Windows that will be saved.  I'm obviously missing something.
thanks,
dave
