Title: ToolTips text
Post by: Eric on August 24, 2010, 09:55:41 pm
Hi Peter,
no big deal, but some of the tooltips are not updated according to the 0.9Z series userinterface.
For example, the tooltip text under the Play button.
Only to let you know in preparartion for Release 1.0 !!
Cheers,
Eric

The tool tips on many topics are not completely visible (9-z2). I know it's better to read them in the help area, but how do I get to see the settings tool tips in the help area, since they take up the same space, on my pc anyway. Is there a way to move the help area?

Is there a manual of some sort somewhere? Something that would answer simple questions like this. I hate to waste people's time asking this sort of stuff, but I'm spending even more time trying to find the answers so here I am.

Chris, can yo give me an example of such a not completely visible ToolTip ? Preferrably a screenshot of it ?

Yes, reading the ToolTips from the Settings Area this way (via the Help Area) is not the most comfortable. But I'd say that for emergency you can also read them in the normal fahsion. Unless they are not ecompletelt visible then ... :swoon:

No manual at this moment other than what's in the Release Notes. So, all *is* in there, but not by structured fashion.
The privileges of a beta version ...
But not the most convient. Sorry.

Peter

Peter, Will do, but it may be a little while as the computer that's running XXHighEnd is not online.

OK, but how does one do this? I haven't been able to figure it out.  :scratching:

Hey Crisnee,

Look for the "?" button in xx, its at the top in the middle of the screen, click that
Now hoover with your mouse over a desired button, they will now reveal there functions in the center pane.

"Look for the "?" button in xx, its at the top in the middle of the screen, click that

Hey Roy,

Thanks. I've tried that before, but it didn't work. I'm assuming you meant "hover" not "hoover," which I haven't tried, it means vacuum in British English   So, I figured something close to what you said must work. And indeed that was the case.

First you hover and then quickly you click on help (without giving the help button tool-tip time to show up). (Remember this is just for the settings window which takes place of the help window). I thought I'd tried that before too, but apparently I must have dillydallied or is it shilly-shallied?

So :thankyou:, in a roundabout way you precipitated my success. I'm not too fond of the normal smiley faces but I  :blush1: love these.

Peter, what I can tell you for now is that on several tool-tips, the whole final paragraph is cut off (adaptive mode for instance) and the ends of some of the longer lines. (With Roy's help I was able to get to see the whole tip in the help window).

It may be tricky to get a screen shot of the tool-tip as it disappears quickly even when you hover, and of course when you remove the mouse. Do you have any suggestions for a screen capture utility that will let me deal with that issue and capture the tool-tips?

Chris

There is a button on your keyboard thats says "PrtScn" (Print Screen), just hit that button to make a full screen-capture.
Next, open Paint and paste it in there.
 ;)

Roy and Peter
Roy, have you been peeking at my keyboard? Well you've misspeeked (that's visual for misspoken). I have the rare keyboard that has no PrtScn. It's a special MAC keyboard that's unofficially Windows compatible. However that's not the weirdest of it.

I did find the creme de la creme of screen capture utilities, but... XXHighEnd is invisible. Notice in the image on the taskbar you see that XX is depressed (as am I and Peter too) which implies that it is open and on the screen. And it is and was during the whole capture procedure. But lo and behold (not), it is nowhere to be found. (http://G:\ScreenShot001.jpg)

I do hope the image appears somewhere, if not, I did attach it, so for a lark take a look there. And needless to say--which doesn't normally stop anyone including me, I screen captured several other programs, none of them pulled the XXHighend disappearing act. I guess it's in unattended mood, if not mode. So, what gives?

Anyway, I'm done futzing with this. You'll just have to believe me Peter, part or most of the last paragraph and long lines are cut off in many of the tool tips on my pc. Vista 64 Sp1, 1680x10?? Acer Lcd.  No other visual weirdnesses.

Mister Hoovercraft,

I had so much fun in reading your conversation with Roy, that I totally skipped the problems what it all really is about. Is that bad ? lol

Also, at this moment I am more interested in the interpretation of hovering vs hoovering, since a hoovercraft is not a vacuum whatever machine, but one which, well, hovers over ... ?

I didn't look up anything, because then the fun would be gone.

Anything else ?

Peter

Chris,

Is it an option no make a photograph of the screen. Let's call it a screenshot. :)

I think it will be very good to see the XX UI because I have the hunch that you see things differently opposed to as intended.

Thanks for your efforts.
Peter

Peter, Alright--which is not the case by the way, I have no idea of what you speak. However that won't stop me from answering.

There is no such thing (or thang as some might say) as a hoovercraft (unless some forward looking company with a sense of humor makes a vac with said moniker). It's called a hover craft, and guess what it does.  It hovers.  :o  and then suddenly takes off like a dragonfly.  :o :nea: Yes it do.

So don't hoover your mouse unless you intend to suck the icons off your desktop. On to serwious stuff, next post, so you don't fergit agin.

By the by, you'll have either to pardon my silliness, use of accents (dialects, not circumflex) and wordplay, or ask me politely or bluntly--if you must, to stop. But just be forewarned, you'll surely be shortening my life.

Chris

Chris,

Ah... Did you not see my lovely pointillistic image? That is my desktop, with XXHighend in its full glory, tool-tips ablazing. It's not my fault it's shy and doesn't show up in screenshots.

Pretty odd really. Do you have a thought as to why this would happen? It never disappeared and was still there afterwards. Could it have blinked on and off more quickly than the eye can observe?

Do you mean that I should take an actual photograph (with a camera) of the screen?  :grazy: I could try that, although I'd need to be pretty agile and quick as your tool-tips don't hang around very long. Well, now that I'm thinking about it, long and hard, this is what you must mean.  I'll go charge up the battery. Demain peut-etre.

Chris

I know, my english is not the best. Sorry for that.

PS: If you have an analogue camera and have to develop the film and all, better don't do it. But you can always put yout monitor on a scanner, right ? 8)

Hey, my English is not the best either, and I'm American--sort of (come to think, that may explain it). That Dutch stuff looks mean on your screenshots by the way.

I was going to scan my monitor, just for a lark--that's one bird in the bush, but I had only one ac outlet available so here's a digital photo instead, enschulden sie mich bitte.

By the way, the tool-tips thing is of no great consequence to me; I just remember reading somewhere that you'd wanted to spiff up the interface for version 1.00. On the other hand you could go to version 9za-0 and give yourself another 26 letters to rectify those niggling impurities, you know, take the Godot route. Look at Gmail, people actually use a false beta icon to give themselves comfort. Of course Gmail hasn't made it very big.  :tomatoes:

:offtopic: I can't get a preview in Chrome (the browser); so if it don't look good blame that upstart Google. Is it a known issue?

Chris, thank you for your efforts. Now I understand. But it's very odd ... here this is allright.
I'm not sure how easy it is for you to switch on the normal Aero look etc., but somehow I expect that to be related. Not sure at all.
Not that you must use Aero again from now on, but just for testing.

I read that too a few days back. But it wasn't from my hand ...

I don't think I'll try that. You can check it out if you must by switching to classic. Why would anyone want to run aero if the goal is to make Vista run lean and mean, or at least not so wimpily?

I'm don't know what you mean. If it's about Aero, I'm assuming you designed the tool-tips under Aero and that's why you don't know that they might not look right in classic. However, as I mentioned earlier, I don't really care about the tool-tips, I thought you did. And if you don't then hey, or as a hillbilly acquaintance likes to say "it don't make no."

Allright, thanks Chris. But indeed I do care, although I will never really read them. :) So it's just for the others.
If I could easily do what you did, I'd do it of course, but I have W7 with more options on this matter, plus there are several ways to do it in the first place. So you see, I just can't copy what you have there, plus I expect it's not that in the first place. I don't like to search for needles in a haystack to begin with, let alone if there's no needle there.

But is each tooltip cut like that ? or most of the larger ones that you know of ?
It's still an odd thing.
