Title: Trouble installing Vista
Post by: DannyD on October 07, 2010, 10:33:15 pm
Windows 7 is installed and running fine on my PC, but I want to install Vista 64-bit.  When I boot off the Vista installation disk, Vista loads windows files fine, and then appears to boot Vista, but then when the next blue Vista screen (as opposed to the blue screen of death) comes up, it sits there for 5 minutes before finally bringing up the window where I'm supposed to specify my Language, etc.  The problem is, there's no mouse or keyboard so I'm stuck.  I know Vista has worked on this PC before because my copy of Windows 7 is an upgrade version so I had to have Vista installed on it first.  My mouse and keyboard are both USB.  Any idea what's wrong?

Doh. I very very vaguely recall something like an "USB problem" in such an occasion. A sort of : the USB drivers are loaded too late. Not sure though.

Seems like a nice deadlock to me.
Shouting outloud may help. Ehm, your mood.

Maybe others have an idea or the experience ? I hope so.

Isn't it a setting in the BIOS?
It happened to me too a long time ago, and even the keyboard was wireless, but the bios saved my day...
USB-keyboard, USB-controller or something like that.

I checked BIOS and everything having to do with USB is Enabled.  What really puzzles me is that it's worked before and I don't recall changing any settings. Mouse and keyboard also work fine in Windows 7.  Hmmm...

Get temporary a ps2 keyboard or mouse.

Yeah, mainboards without "legacy" ps2 ports are a disaster, intel's stupidity at its best.
A SP1 or SP2 version of Vista can work, or an update to the bios. Getting a ps2 keyboard or mouse was indeed the simplest solution, provided that he can attach it.
