Title: XX+music in ramdisk vs Streaming
Post by: ivo on October 25, 2010, 11:42:29 pm
Hi,

Just noticed arrival of 0.9-z3, but before reading let me post my findings:

1. Went to magnatune.com (http://magnatune.com) and downloaded mp3 file (need to register and if cancel within 7 days - no fee).
2. Put that file into Ramdisk and listened (16/44 mode, no upsamplings).
3. Listened the same file via the built in player at that website (note that need to be registered to listen high quality mp3 files).

Well, both ways the sound is very close. I mean website's sound is very close to XX sound. Streamed mp3 file sounds definitely better than if that file sits on the c: drive.

I do not know what to say more here.

Yes, I tried that quite some years ago (before XX development) as an alternative to my network streamer. The host was a friend's PC (many KM's away).
It worked very good sound wise and just needed enough upload speed at the other end (which often is a problem here).

Maybe we can emulate the streaming (in-house) ?

But careful, because MP3 doesn't cut it much anymore, while back then I had a very hard time to differentiate between 256 MP3 and uncompressed .WAV.
But still ... :)
