Title: W7 freezing after hit Play

Hi,

1) A bug report I guess:
I have one album which freezes my PC after I hit play in unattended mode. I tried various ways: big and small SFS, then 00 and 11. All the same. Actually the same album works fine in previous version.
Another sub-case was that after playing the same album's first track XX just stopped nicely. Then I continued playback from track2 and PC freezes.
In all of the above cases the frozen state is for about 3-5 min, then I can get all back, but except the sound.

Details: W7, 3 GB of RAM, Ramdisk set to 1500 MB, music in the Ramdisk, SFS=200 MB or any other, bits=11, KS-Adaptive.

2) Peter, "Do not start playback at all" means source files are copied to Ramdisk? So, I gues this is not valid for FLACs? I mean, can you include in future the feature, that after hitting play, also FLACs, mp3s are copied from wherever they are to the Ramdisk and then from there converted into WAVs before the playback, so to eliminate this manual operation which I do.

Hi there Ivo,

Suppose you set SFS.ini to 00.
Start TaskManager with the CPU graph.
Set your Core AppointMent Scheme to 1.
Now start that track which "hangs".

Can you show me the CPU graph of that ?

And is your Virtual Memory On or Off ?

All goes to the RAMDisk, though in converted state (the .WAVs). So there's nothing you need to do manually. Ok, start Play by means of Alt-P (AutoHotkey active) in the end.

Ivo, now I think of it ... my before proposals aren't going to help us much, or will be too tedious to deal with efficiently.
It would be way better if you can send me that album (I'm afraid to ask for some tracks you have problems with because it may be about the whole album somehow). So if you could FileMail  it ... (don't do it if you don't want to, and keep in mind that I will put myself responseable, of which this post is the witness).

Ivo - hmm ...

Can you recognize that from the 3 files (you sent), only track 02 hangs ?

Anyway, this is 100% the same as here : Most peculiar : loop from "wrong" rips ? (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1436.0)
So let's say this can't be a coincidence (look in the core of the sound engine, and you will see it at 100% all the time).
... But I solved it by re-ripping those tracks ... ?

Well, luckily I have your example to dive into it.

I don't know how you "get all back" after 3-5 minutes, because here it never seems to happen. But, I can easily kill Engine3.exe once (remember, and read my topic I just referred to) I have started TaskManager in advance. So, you probably can get back into control somehow, but if you don't kill XXEngine3.exe no other instance will ever start, and you will have "no sound" as such.

I will let you know when I found it.

Ok ... many hours later ...

I soon found that track02 has just wrong header data after FLAC decoding. I tried to improve on it, but had to give up.
Notice : Before, yes, such a track would have worked but with unexpected anomalies somewhere. The header is and stays wrong, but before (0.9z-2 etc.) I didn't check for some things which I do now. For example, it says that its 20 bits, has a bit rate of 224000 (or something) and the sample rate is undetermined. Yes, Foobar plays it.

So, from now on : wrong header data means just that, and XX won't play it anymore.
Of course I could find the "hang" hence loop, and build in the necessary checks now resulting in a message that the header data is wrong.

Sorry, but end of story.

PS: ... al will be the result of the FLAC conversion making a mess of something, because in the FLAC header all is still okay. But after decoding the WAV header is not. I can't help that ...

Don't give up on that track so quickly IVO.

Try trans-coding it to re-write the header using something like Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) or even probably easier, dBPowerAmp ( http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ )

If you use dBPowerAmp, convert to plain 'ol WAV format, then see if that will play OK in XXHE. If it does, there is a good chance that when you use dBPowerAmp to convert it back to FLAC again, that the headers are written back correctly. Be sure to work on copies of the original file while experimenting.

Audacity will take a little more work, as you will need to learn how to save the audio file back in the format of choice, which could be either FLAC or WAV.

These approaches are usually successful in fixing mangled headers.
